  • HOW TO PAINT LANDSCAPES FROM PHOTOGRAPHS / Are you working from photos more right now? After years of teaching, I've recognized 3 big mistakes that most artists make when they paint from photographs instead of from life. I've found ways to use photographs successfully so that people can’t tell whether it’s painted from observation or from a reference photo. And I'll be demonstrating 6 of those in today's short video.

This is the most helpful video by far that comes from the youtube search "painting from photographs." Unlike many others, you actually show specific problems and the steps to solving them. Also unlike many others, your own finished work (when I google your paintings) are beautifully composed and painted. So thanks. One more dead giveaway that a painting is from a photo (I don't think you mentioned this) is when the background is composed entirely of circular areas of abstract color, which is what happens when focus is flat on the foreground, and the background is totally out of camera focus! You see this a lot in wildlife photography.
