  • This is just a condensed compilation of the three-part series of building this layout I built and donated to a school fundraiser.
    • Buy me a coffee to help support this channel: www.buymeacoffee.com/stephens...
    The layout took about 12 total hours to build, spread out over a few weeks, for a total materials cost of around $250 (including the train).

    Do you recommend bachmann or kato for starting n scale?

    • @StevesTrains
      @StevesTrains  5 років тому +1

      Kato is much higher quality than the intro level Bachmann stuff, so if you can afford it, that is the way to go. The track is more reliable as are the locomotives. It does cost more though. While I used a steam engine here, the Bachman diesels are generally going to be more reliable than the steam engines. The Bachmann track is usually fine if you don’t take it apart much, but the rail joiners quickly get loose after being taken apart a couple times. Of course you can always pick up some Kato track later on to use with a bachmann starter set or use Atlas or Peco track later on.

    • @StevesTrains
      @StevesTrains  Рік тому

      I don’t remember offhand. It was either 8 or 10. I think I may have had two short pieces of straight track plus 6 8.5” radius curve tracks, 1 regular 9.75” radius curve track and the 1 9.75” radius viaduct piece for the bridge.

    Can you shed some light on the electrical. I see at the end you just have a USB plug in there. Are you running it on a fixed voltage from a wall transformer?

    • @StevesTrains
      @StevesTrains  4 роки тому +1

      No, I’m using a battery powered throttle: amzn.to/36CodDi that you can also buy an ac adapter for. I have the track power and accessory fixed voltage power leads running to a USB plug from the throttle unit then have a female USB adapter in the layout with the wires there split to track power and the lighting. Obviously you have to be careful you keep the wires that are coming from the fixed voltage output going to the lights and the variable voltage to the track. The wires are small and so you wouldn’t want to do that for a large layout or a larger scale layout since the resistance would be high if the wires were long, which would result in a noticeable voltage drop and also make the wires get warm under load, but for a small n scale layout like this it works fine.

  • @MartyLJ57
    @MartyLJ57 4 роки тому +1

    What diameter track did you use?

    • @StevesTrains
      @StevesTrains  4 роки тому

      There are two 9 3/4” radius sections. One is the bridge and the other exactly opposite the bridge. The remainder are I think 8.5”. Whatever the next smaller radius is in the Kato track.

    Are u using the Woodland Scenic glue to do the Ballast i cant think what is called but y know the spray glue stuff .

    • @StevesTrains
      @StevesTrains  4 роки тому

      I’m using the woodland scenics scenic cement. It is basically just a mix of Matt medium and water which you can make yourself. I just usually by the scenic cement since I do small layouts and it lasts a while. I do also have a gallon jug of white glue I use for the base layer of glue. However the white glue makes things a bit shiny if you use it on your top layer of scenery so I prefer to use Matt medium based glue mixes when going down ballast and final layers of scenery.

      Tony Kane I wet the ballast first with 70-90% rubbing alcohol. That allows the glue to soak right in. You can also use water with a couple drops of dish soap mixed in. Either way, dribble that on first or spray it with a spray bottle. That keeps the water/glue mix from beading up on the surface

But if it is a simple enough project it is something I can do.
