  • In this video, I show I built a 24" diameter N scale micro layout that is battery powered and features steep mountain terrain and a waterfall. The layout uses Kato Unitrack and runs off of two 9V batteries. The layout was built for a store display, and features a push-button control on the front for visitors to run the train, or can be set to run continuously on the main control panel integrated into the back of the layout. The layout uses 8.5" radius curved track with a 4 7/8" straight deck girder bridge in the front and a 4 7/8" straight section of track inside the tunnel.

    I like the way you involve your boy
    I was watching a fella building a slot car track the other day and his nephew walked into the room and asked a question and the fella freaked out and told the kid to get out because he was making a video

    Great job. What would really be neat is an actual waterfall with a circulating pump.

      It is easier with a larger diameter layout to get that right.

    If your work is this amazing on an N Scale train Lord knows what an H.O. Scale layout would look like on a 4x8. Nice job as always Steve!

    Great job, Steve! Instead of the tweezers, I've taken two used wooden chopsticks and whittled them to a sharper point. Some grocery stores with cafes have them on the rack with the plastic knives and forks...

    Steve, this is wonderful as we've all come to expect from your painstaking, realistic work. I do, though, have a question. What is the advantage of the push button? What am I missing here --- seems it would be easier to just use a knob like on a standard power pack, so you wouldn't have to hold the button on all the time. Anyway, your layouts are really inspirational!

    Lovely work, Steve as always. A very interesting layout to say the least. N Scale is an amazing way to fit a layout into a small place such as this table base. Just question or two, which mic system did you use for the voice overs and lastly what is your video editor? Was trying to work it out from the start of your video. Absolutely loved the waterfall too! Keep well. Cheers Caleb

      I have an audio-technica mic that I use with my PC laptop for work meetings and webinars, but I have a hard time getting it to work right on my Mac. It will work fine plugged into my iphone though. It is super sensitive though and picks up a lot of background noise. I actually used a Rode Video Micro attached to. my iphone for the audio on this video and just recorded a voice memo. I'm still just using iMovie for all the video editing. Almost all the video of the layout build came from my iPhone XR, except the video of the finished layout which I took with my Canon SL2.

    Nice work, but why don't you build on a work bench instead of the concrete floor ?

    • @StevesTrains
      @StevesTrains  3 роки тому +1

      I only have room for a small work bench (as long as I want to be able to keep both cars in the garage) and I find it easier to work on the floor. Maybe I will eventually figure out a way to reconfigure things so I can do a fold down workbench. Even so I like working on the garage floor.

    how long will the batteries last in a setup like this? is this an economical way to run a small layout that is not used a lot?

    • @StevesTrains
      @StevesTrains  4 місяці тому +1

      Well, I would use rechargeable batteries for normal use. Energizer Lithium 9V batteries last a long time. Not sure how long, but I’ve had them run a train all day at a train show, although likely varies significantly by individual locomotive and how much power it is drawing. This was built as a store display that would normally be run only for short period with a push button so that is why it is battery powered.

    What would you charge for labor on a setup like this?

    • @StevesTrains
      @StevesTrains  Рік тому +1

      It varies since I usually ballpark a number at the start of a project and then the per hour rate basically depends on how fast I get it done. I should note that I have a wait list of over five years at this point for commission projects.

    Do you have details on the battery pack and assoc parts you used . I need one for an Nscale layout I would like to build ?

    • @StevesTrains
      @StevesTrains  3 роки тому +2

      I used the panel mounted controller from here: zscaletrack.com/controllers along with 9V battery holders: amzn.to/2K1qFNI
      The battery throttles on the z scale track page are all great, including the 9V blue line one and the Rokuhan one that holds 8 AAA batteries. Both only output 9-10V maximum so won't run your n scale trains as fast as a regular controller. That is why I wired two 9V batteries in series to the panel mounted controller so it would output closer to 16V for a higher top speed.

    So what is Second Fiddle? Do they have a web site so we can see this layout in situ?

    • @StevesTrains
      @StevesTrains  4 роки тому +1

      I don’t know if they have any pictures yet. I believe they make custom n scale box cars that can both operate on a model railroad and be used as vaping devices.

    Your scenic and construction skills are wonderful but your mechanical machining and electronic skills are "challenged." You need to get a step drill to make accurate holes for switches and work on your soldering technique. To make a long tunnel through your foam just get some tubing and sharpen one end and use your drill. The speed will heat the end and it will bore right through cleanly. As to manipulating the cotton, I would recommend the bamboo skewers they sell for BBQ at the grocery. They are already sharpened and basically disposable. You can also use them cut down for fenceposts too.
