- The BMW m42 stroker went back to Shrigley engineering for a refresh as it has been in my rally car for 7 years and I have completed many rallies along with auto solos, rally demonstrations as well as driving up motorways to get to events. Andy has fitted some wilder cams, new pistons and new valve springs. When it came apart everything looked really good and hopefully it’s ready for another 7 years. Andy mainly works on Hillman engines getting great power out of them, he has worked on many vauxhall xe engines, rolls royce, aston martin and is currently restoring a Sierra Cosworth along with a rally imp and a space frame imp. check out his channel by searching Andy Jones hillman imp as there is lots of interesting things going on

I have this wacky idea for N42 4 cyl. It has the vanos, and I was thinking the vanos could also move an actuator that then pushes on a custom intake box. The intake box would have telescoping channels. You could probably 3D print the whole thing, use a bit of metal here and there. Or modify an existing intake of some kind. So while the vanos just does it's job normally, it's also changing the intake channel length. Shorter length would give more power on high rpm. So essentially you can have a stricter cam while the low-rpm also gets a helpful boost from long intake channels. Who knows maybe it could hit some emissions limit better with this mod.
Maybe it's just fantasy. But I got a 318ti and I'm just thinking if this vanos system can be repurposed and modified for some kind of gain.

I would like to know the mechanical lift of which engine it is, or if you could provide me with the reference, I am making a stroker with a 320d 90mm crankshaft and 86mm pistons, and I need to mount mechanical lift.

Andy was going to build me a 2.5 but it would have meant getting 5 cranks made which was going to be expensive so we left it as it is
That 2.5 litre engine that was discussed near the end of the video, was that based on the M44 block? I'd love to see that in an E30!
it was going to be for the m42 block. unfortunately it wasn't cost productive unless 4 cranks were made and it was getting expensive. Shame as it could have worked really well
@jerseytim100 That's unfortunate but understandable. I guess most people would go for a 6 pot engine if they wanted more displacement. It would have made a great alternative to an S15 and with a less weight at the front end, compared to the M50, etc.
So, your bottom end has:
-m47 88mm crank
- stock 140mm m42 rods
- 86mm forged c20xe pistons from qed/ omega racing?
yes originally when it was first built as a stroker it had the stock m42 rods but now has ZRP rods but everything else is as you say
So glad I found out throughout this video about the c20xe pistons. Finding some reasonably priced s52 pistons for this stroker project was nearly impossible. Now I found hope

@@molnarvaleriu3187 the pins on the xe pistons were smaller than the m42 pistons so bushes were fitted to the small end of the rods to make it work
@@jerseytim100 Did ZRP make you rods with a 21mm pin end? Looks like that piston has a 21mm pin and zrp M42 spec rods are 22mm pin? Maybe I am looking at the wrong piston and rods links. Thanks
@@EdgeAvl1212 zrp supplied the bushes to make the rods work with the xe pistons but the engine builder wasn’t happy with them and had different ones fitted. I am not sure what size they were
What about exhaust manifold, what do you use 4-2? Do you have anybody who build it for you because I am looking for an aftermarket one for my e30 M42 rally car and can't find any decent one??
I originally had an exhaust made when the engine was in the compact but it wouldn’t fit into the e30 so I bought an eBay one which needed total remaking to fit and the steering column now runs through the middle of it. They are both on my other videos on the channel

Thank you. The crankshaft was just modified for the front pulleys to fit
What does something like this cost? Parts and labor. I have an e30 m42 and am torn between swapping and rebuilding.
It isn’t cheap. It will cost a lot less to carry out an engine swap

what engine is the crankshaft from? can I ask you questions in another way? I also want to modify my m42

@@jerseytim100 m47tud20 is not the 88mm crankshaft ? must be m47d20? year of construction 2000/2001?
What kind of cylinder head gasket did you choose?
It has a steel multi layer head gasket
Where did you find the chain tensioner on the left?
It is all standard m42
@@jerseytim100 I mean, I've been searching the timing chain components for some time and I don't know if it's possible to find this chain tensioner as it's out of stock and delivery is discontinued from the factory. I thought you have replaced the timing chain and that is why I asked.
@@karakonjo11 Better to just leave it alone and put a new tensioner in. You could buy 2 used engines for the price of those parts (if you even manage to get them).
