Willie continually came to Fort Worth from near Waco in the 50s to sing and play. A man with no legs used to sell paper, ribbons, pencils and so on from a box on the sidewalks of downtown Fort Worth. Willie wrote this song as a tribute to the legless man that was always there. What a tribute!
This is my favorite Willie version of the song. My wife grew up in Fort Worth and remembers the man as well as a lady ( wife? ) who was there and sang with a guitar on the downtown streets of Fort Worth.
I love love this song. We heard Little Jimmy Dickens sing this on The Opry one Saturday night and Jimmy has the voice for any kind of a ballad. I do like Willie's version here. The song seems just right for him. The lyrics are so pretty and mean a lot. This song is perfect to dance to. One of the nicest songs ever written I feel. - Thanks for posting. - Paula (PaulinaRena)
Love the original. Used to listen to this one with my Papa when I was a kid. He had it on an old cassette mixed tape, I think. It had this, Funny How Time Slips Away; Hello, Walls; Good Times; Phases and Stages; a song with a line like, "footsteps match my heartbeat, funny heartbeats on lenolium"............... I've been looking all over for it, but I'm afraid it was a one if a kind compilation my Papa made from multiple Willie Nelson tapes..... I wish I could remember every song, because now that he's (my papa) has passed away, I'd give anything to hear that tape again...
I believe the song you're looking for is "She's Still Gone". I remember listening to a lot of these with my dad too, especially "Hello, Walls". "Four in the Morning", "Shutters and Boards"... My dad passed a couple of years ago and I wish I had his music collection, too!
Willie wrote this song about a man that had no leg's. He would get around on a creeper scoot around town selling ribbons , paper roses at Christmas in down town Fort Worth Tex. But the man was from Mineral Wells Tex I would see this man when I was A kid around town Willie saw this man and wrote this beautiful song with the mans words
Yes Willie did write the song. So says the BMI database. By the way, this by far is my favorite version of this song, even out of Willie's own many versions over the years.
Thank you for posting Willie's original version, and not his later remake. When he rerecorded it, it lost some of the poignancy in favor of a too slick sound.
Willie did - but Roy had the big hit with it here in the 1960's UK. Both superb performers though - and both have written so many good numbers that others have covered as well.
This is when Willie was Willie the 1960's. I only liked his 60's Stuff anywayz. He word his song so well and if you want to hear a pretty Willie song check out December Day.
This is a different version by Willie than I have heard before and I like it better. Wille did write the song and Roy Orbison took it and made a hit out of it. Willie re wrote the song in 1979 for an album but that was not as good a versiion as this one. or the one's Oribion did. One thing to remember is that when you think Willie Nelson and Roy Orbison you are thinking of two of the very best with a song like this. Personally, I like Roy's better but that is only my personal feelings. .

I consider this song to be Willie's "Ode to the Homeless." The music as well as the message are timeless.
One of my favorite Christmas songs. Love Willie!!!
Such a lovely song, memories ❤ xx
What a voice… love the song by Roy Orbison as well👍❤️❤️❤️❤️🎄🎄🎄🎄🎄🎄
Time flies 😢 one of my favorite of his songs..🎉
The book is a great read...❤
My grandpa would play this on his guitar. Makes me cry but one of my favorite Christmas songs.
Same with my Dad. Lots of memories.
My heart ache for you my sister
This is my favorite Willie version of the song. My wife grew up in Fort Worth and remembers the man as well as a lady ( wife? ) who was there and sang with a guitar on the downtown streets of Fort Worth.
A real iconic Christmas song; unlike so much filtered stuff that gets to be monotonous. 💕

The BEST cover of this song ever......Thanks Willie
It is not a cover,Willie wrote it and sang it first.
@@lonniestump7374 Roy Orbison release it first. His publishing company owns the rights.
Even though Willie wrote it, it's technically a cover.
Willie has my heart. Such a beautiful voice.
There is quite a story attached to this song as in many of Willies Songs..I think of this song everytime I go to Portland,Or
Super, I love Willie's voice.

Roy Orbison wrote this song in 1964. He and Willie are both legends and both sing this song perfectly.
Willie wrote this song, not Roy O.

Time in a flesh dwelling is going to run out of time in flesh!
@FantasticlifeinJesus Near the beginning of the song, the lyric is "christmas is nigh", nigh being an old word for "near".
The BEST version, written by Willie himself but Roy Orison recorded it first, then Willie, I like Willie's version much better!
Nice. I have Roy Orbison doing this, but not Willie. Thanks for sharing. Thanks to countryirish for sending it to me.
Great song! Did Willie write this or did Roy Orbison?
The loneliest cowboy zombie says I’m going to sing this song for my mom on Christmas eve
Nice but sad
