This was a great video. I wish I could have been there with you. Just absolutely lovely, and I just love the sunset at the end of the video, well done there. As to the Moissac Abbey, here's some information on it. www.sacred-destinations.com/france/moissac-abbey-cloister
lovely film. The canal du midi used to be as quiet as the Garonne.. when I lived down there. The plane trees on the midi were equally as shady and restful but unfortunately have suffered from a disease that is spreading. The old trees have been felled and there are lots of volunteers planting new resistant varieties, so it will change again. Incidentally; spring is a good time to go as you can be guaranteed water and peace
Loved it. The canals are sooooooo cool. I never knew they existed like that. Suck it up Nick. The heat is better then below zero weather here in the states. I know you can do it. Can't wait for the next video. Keep smiling and sail on.
Cloister! ROFL! That was a funny bit. But wow, what a georgios part of the canal. I'm kicking back the day after Thanksgiving enjoying some Ruby Rose adventures. Wonderful N&T.
It is great to go through the fresh water canals once in a while as it kills most if not all of the marine growth from the ocean and makes cleaning the hull easier. Then when you get to the ocean the fresh water growth dies and falls away making it easier to clean and then you end up with a clean hull for the next part of the journey.
I have been along for your adventures awhile ....... I must let you know that this channel journey has been one of your most enjoyable, the photography, the relaxed nature and your loving relationship - just delightful - thank you for sharing.
This is an incredible journey. 49c is bloody hot.Epected here in Aus but I never knew France could get that hot. You have more fenders than a guitar museum but i can see why you do. cheers.
Various degrees of heat: @16:00 "Last night ... it was sweltering ... , today is going to be hotter, tomorrow hotter still and Thursday it's going to be crazy hot". 🤣Have to love it 😄
We had 48 deg C at Chalon so headed up on the Canal du Centre then into the canal lateral a la Loire . Temp lowered to mid 30’s, 38 on occasions. A new problem was the farmers nicking the canal water for the fields. The draft guarantee could not be maintained so we are in la junction at Nevers. Nice place but it was not the grand circuit via Paris and epernay that we are planning to complete in 2020. It’s a new paradigm for canal navigation.
Have really enjoyed your canal experience! We have a Hunter 356 and have been down the KY Lake toTenn-Tom to Mobile from KY Lake 650 miles (then down and back to SW Fla and Keys), 13 locks both ways but much wider and more rural. The French locks have a lot to offer. One thing we have that makes it more comfortable is a generator (Northern Lights 5.5 KW) and water to air heat pump. We run it continuously when off dock power so we stay cool or warm, depending on the conditions. Makes it easy sleeping hot or cold and at least one can slip down to the Saloon during the day to get some respite from the heat or cold. We are doing our annual move to our hometown marina next weekend 84NM upstream on the Cumberland River in Tennessee, Wie also have a full enclosure which adds immensely to comfort. Forecast for light rain, 32 to 50 degrees F, but we are set up for it. You should look into a generator and heat pump on your next boat - fixes those extreme conditions! Be safe and stay comfortable. Your videos are the best!
I'd like to see a series of videos with you sailing around England, Scotland, Ireland, Wales, Cornwall, and maybe a stop at the Isle of Man. Surely there's enough interesting ports and historical places in those locations for some great videos? The Ruby Rose's Celtic Adventure? Slainte!
Looks like you had to clean sea strainers and often lot that water looks pretty dirty very cool video seems like a very awesome relaxed trip double thumbs up Vegas Bill peace be safe and I hope you're having a good holiday and thank you so much for the awesome videos all year
Wonderful, relaxing video. In a moment of perfect synergy, I'm sitting watching while sipping a glass of chilled French rose only to find you guys sipping the same in the video! That monastery was simply amazing, and the ancient pipe organ really grabbed my attention. Can just imagine a piece by Guillaume de Machaut being performed on that organ at the time he would have composed it (1300s).
Fantastic video, guys - many thanks for sharing a beautiful experience. 43 degrees C in the shade on our verandah yesterday afternoon....I love that hot weather. Be safe, thanks again...
Your videos have been wonderful, the canal has been different, the stops along the way with a history lesson priceless, this short interlude of your life, mind blowing. I can't thank you enough. Thanksgiving weekend and you give us this!!!! Thank you.
Google Weber Q1000. That’ll be the last time you serve meat that has been burned to a crisp or you smoked out your neighbors downwind! Took me 25 years to realize that the “marine” bbq’s are substandard in my opinion.:-)
believe the idea was that older barges fit 2 in the rounded wall locks.. and it was easier to make the lock space with a bottle-neck as the moving gates got far more complex when made larger (wider) having more pressure on the hinges etc. Seems they got a bit lazy back in the 1600 ish
We were on the Midi in September this year. Still hot but not oppressively so. Our first time ... but not our last. Being from Canada, the history floored us! You do a great job. Keep it up.
Second post as watching your entire episode. The Abbey Q&A bit.....made me literally laugh out loud! I can count on this channel to be interesting with flashes of wit! Excellent. TY
Surprised no one called for a Fire Brigade with the amount of smoke from the cooker however maybe they are use to it. The smoke does dramatically show the stillness of the air and how it is staying low to the ground and water surface. The two of you just looked uncomfortable in the heat. Thanks very much for sharing with us love the videography.
To me it appears that one reason for the du Midi locks being concave walls made the construction engineering easier, effecting a compression arch against the earth backfill so probably meant less stone had to be laid, though it requires the lock gate heads to be of sufficient mass to anchor the arch.
have you guys done a full review of your top 10 anchorage spots ? If so I haven’t came across it yet and I’m power watching my way through to catch up 😂 if not ? Why not ! Would love to have an in-depth top ten review guys 😎👍🏽🌅
Yet another fab video. It was great to bump into you you at the Southampton boat show I am back on my feet and working furiously to get Moonshine ready for the canals. Moonshine is only 26 foot and so space is at a real premium. So can I ask how much did you use the folding bikes. I have a folding electric bike which is great for longer trips but heavy and a bit bulky so I am thinking of getting two smaller bikes one for me and one for my wife. But if you seldom used yours I am wondering if they would just get in the way.
Hey mate, for the canals the bike are invaluable. Many of the villages and supermarkets are a couple of km from the canal and so you need a bike and a basket
When we did the Canal du Midi the canal had mature plaintrees everywhere. We wintered in the 50 km bief above Beziers. Later all the trees ware cut down du to some disese.
Guy's, great stuff! I get the impression you would like a bigger Westerly with a lift-up keel. Hi, from Sydney, still with smoke haze here, probably all summer. Fair winds.

Hello Terysa and Nick: We are the Brazilian family of SV Biguá. During the last two years, we have been living onboard our Lagoon 42 and sailed 10.000 miles from Europe to the Caribbean. Now we are thinking about a boat upgrade before going to the Pacific. But between one catamaran and another and (heavily influenced by your videos I must say) we are considering travel via the European channels. The idea would be to buy a used motorboat, traveling from Holland to Germany and France for almost one year then sell the boat. One big concern that we have about this project is the fuel consumption. We are not used to consider this when sailing but I'm afraid that it may cause a huge impact on our budget with a motorboat. Do you have any idea about how many miles you have traveled and how many liters you have consumed during your canal trip? Also, on board with us would be our teenage daughter, and she worries that this type of trip might not be fun for her, do you guys thing this project is interesting and cool for adults as well as for teens? Thanks for your help, we enjoy watching your videos as a family. Fair winds and safe sails, Márcio.

I'm surprised there aren't a lot of boats using the canal system. At least it looks that way. Seems that it would be such a beautiful journey. :-)
It’s too shallow for most boats unless you have a lift keel. Nowadays even the shoal draft boats are struggling

Is swimming allowed in the canals?
These videos continue to show ever more idyllic towns. They all look stunningly beautiful, but I think Moissac beats them all.
It was so so pretty.
What's the depth like in these canals?
no rolling around during dinner :)
Do the canals ever open up into a lake or are they all just a channel?
They connect to a river on the Atlantic side. Some of the other canals utilise the existing river systems though.
google maps may help??
