When Should I Change the Battery In My Mazda 3 Remote Key Fob?
If you notice the range of your remote key fob starts to decrease or the smart key fob slowly stops working, you may need to remove and replace the batteries. The back of the Mazda 3 remote key fob case will need to be removed in order to change the key battery.
This Mazda 3 Key Fob Is:

On Board Programming: No
This video will show you how to remove and replace the smart key remote fob batteries on the following Mazda models:

Today I learned I have an emergency key 😂
This video was amazing and straight to the point. Thank you!
You're Welcome! Glad it helped
Incase you don’t have 2025 battery. The 2032 battery will fit also, a little thick but, it will fit, just push the black round cover a little bit and close the case pressing all around it will snap lock. Thanks for this video info 👍🙂
Thanks! Was worried it wouldn't but your comment gave me the confidence to try and it worked perfectly!
So helpful! Just took delivery on a 2015 Mazda3 from the dealer today, and we discovered the second key fob was dead once we got home. Followed these simple instructions, and now the key fob is as good as new! Saved me a call/trip back to the dealer, too. Thanks so much.
You're Welcome!
When separating the casing, DO NOT push your pry tool into the outer seam. As noted in the video, it will damage the casing.
Instead, there are little slots inside the casing at either side of the physical key. They're easily visible once it's removed; my remotes even say, "OPEN" with tiny arrows pointing to the little slots). They're designed for separating the case, so use those to start prying the halves apart. Once you're started, it may not separate completely; using the pry tool further down the casing at this point is less likely to damage it than at the beginning.
another quick tip: something as simple and blunt/non-damaging as a US dime can be used on the inner slots if you don't have a screwdriver handy or are nervous about damaging the case.
btw, this remote design also applies to some Mazda 3s going back to at least 2012.
Thanks for this tip on how to open the casing! After you mentioned that I found a different video that shows how to do it. ua-cam.com/video/wmI9oktXLK0/v-deo.html
Thank you! I love how your video explained it perfectly while getting straight to the point.
Glad it helped!

Does the brand of the batteries make a difference? Mine don’t last so I wonder if it’s because they are too cheap
I used Selection brand and Panasonic brand and had to change them after a few weeks i would like to find some that last at least a year
Also, one of my cases has a few cracks does it impact battery life?
Thanks!
I'm bookmarking this video for when I need to change the battery.
Thank you. I was worried I'd have to head to a Mazda dealership, and maybe have to pay a bunch of money to change the battery. (I don't know that Mazda will do that... it's just a worry of mine.)
I need to look around my car to see where that emergency key would go LOL! 😂
A question... do I need to reprogram my key fob after I replace the battery? If so, how do I do that?
Subbed! 👍
No - the fob should not need to be reprogrammed after just changing the fob battery
@@PYR-Auto Ah, thank you! 😀
thank you. The instructions in the manual are inaccurate. Last time I took it to the dealer and paid $10 to have the battery replaced.🥴
You're Welcome! Glad it helped
Looks simple her, but the inside of the case for by 2016 Mazda 3 is not like this. Can't get the old battery out much less put the new one in?
Will I need to do any sort of reprogramming or will it still be good to go once it is replaced?
you should not need to reprogram after just changing the fob battery
🙏🙏🙏
I changed one of my key fob batteries but the other key fob doesn't have a black plastic cover. It's got some weird metal piece that feels like I'll break something if I pull on it and I'm not able to remove the battery? Do you know what I mean or have you ever seen what I'm describing? So frustrating cuz I basically only have one key fob
Not sure what you mean on that sorry
I think you might have pulled the circuit board out. I did that my first time. The black plastic piece is on the other side
@@jasonwhite2520 You are right and the nice man at the dealership fixed it for me. Very happy.
Well then LEARN what he means cause that's what I have!!!@@PYR-Auto
An emergency key to get into the car....can you use it to start the car too?
No
You can use the key fob to start the car by pressing the start button with it.
Yes, you can. The steering column should have a slot on the side. You may have to remove a circular plastic cover to expose it. For my year (2012): once inserted, the physical key does not turn/twist; it just sits in the steering column, but now the normal start button will start the engine.
Mine is plastic encased... help!
if it has aftermarket case around the fob, there will be a way to remove it
Thank you!! I felt like I was in the Stone Age unlocking my Mazda with the key …Gross 🤮😂
lol You're Welcome!
