This is what happens when malice is assumed whenever someone does something you don't agree with. Even if you think something is morally wrong you should give the other side the benefit of the doubt their intent is malicious. Treating every political and social issue as 'life and death' and 'good and evil' is destroying the country. You can believe someone is 100% wrong and still be respectful and a friend.

Nixon is often cited as the "last liberal president". In those days the GOP was not just the scam it is today, politicians actually thought they had to do things for working people to get elected and the "enemy" was Communism so the parties were more similar in a lot of ways..and yes they all drank from the same trauft. But, Communism was a real threat in the sense it offered an actual economic alternative, it was real competition so the US had to have a prosperous middle class, it had to look better. Now you are expendable and what you get is a "wall" or culture wars, private prisons, the most expensive health care in the western world, an illegal surveillance state and gun violence like no where else in the civilized world. You are no longer a citizen of a democracy (which the GOP keeps saying out load that the USA is not a democracy) but the subject of an empire...how does it feel?

@@andrewsutherland133 Nixon had his bad qualities, but it reminds me of how Ernest Hemmingway said we don't just carry the qualities of ourselves, but of our friends. I think when Nixon brokered peace and negotiation with China he was carrying on Kennedy's legacy for him.
Of course without the Vietnam war, and its subsequent political corruption domestically entailed with it, both Lyndon B. Johnson and Nixon may have been remembered for their achievements rather than their hand in the worst war since WWII against a decolonising nation with millions of civilians.

@@JingleJangleJam You heavily mischaracterize Vietnam. We were fighting for the right of South Vietnam to be free from communist aggression. It was NOT an anti-colonial struggle. Both nations were independent by 1954.
And Nixon ended the war in Vietnam in 1973. It only flared up again in 1975 with attack by the North against the south in complete violation of the Paris treaty. We were fully pulled out by then, except for our embassy personnel.

    • @JingleJangleJam
      @JingleJangleJam 3 місяці тому

@@RaptorFromWeegee That's the official explanation of Vietnam from the memos and press that cheered on the war at the time, and it was refuted, not least of all, by the leaders of the war in Vietnam themselves.
I recommend as instructive on this issue, not of the causes of the Vietnam war, of which the past colonialism of the French in Indo-China was surely a cause for nationalist resentment of foreign invaders, but the book by Robert McNamera, the Secretary of Defence in the Kennedy and Johnson administrations, In Retrospect: The Tragedy and Lessons of Viet Nam paints a more sombre characterisation of how events turned out than you just optimistically have towards the understanding of the United States of the past colonial issues that Viet Nam had had and the nationalist sentiment that was more the influence there than an international Communist Conspiracy or Domino Effect as was seen as the official reasoning of the time.
''We misjudged then - as we have since - the geopolitical intentions of our adversaries . . . and we exaggerated the dangers to the United States of their actions. We viewed the people and leaders of South Viet Nam in terms of our own experience. We saw in them a thirst for, and a determination to fight for, freedom and democracy. We totally misjudged the political forces within the country. We underestimated the power of nationalism to motivate a people (in this case, the North Vietnamese and Vietcong) to fight and die for their beliefs and values - and we continue to do so in many parts of the world.
Our misjudgements of friend and foe alike reflected our profound ignorance of the history, culture, and politics of the people in the area, and the personalities and habits of the leaders.''
So you proclaim to know a lot about the history of the war in Viet Nam, - - only to prove that you have learned nothing about the history of the war in Viet Nam outside of judging it from the experiences of 1960s US thought.
In 1995 Bush and McNamara visited Vietnam after normalizing relations and thus implicitly admitting they had in the past misjudged the nation as an enemy through diplomacy leading to open relations today with no need ever of having to have fought those people who loved freedom so dearly. It was McNamara who helped rehabilitate the shared values between both nations that ought never to have been divided but by cruel chance and historical fate.
Colin Powell said in his memoirs ''we bombed the hell out of Viet Nam and never did stop the Ho Chi Minh Trail.''
It was hitting civilian areas in the North which would not impede military supplies to Viet Nam. Even military historians, such as John Keegan, who were conservative and supported the political causes of Viet Nam, said that they disagreed with its brutal methods of escalating bombings.
McNamara in 1967 had his senior official John McNaughton ''start collecting documents for future scholars to use'' because McNamara ''wanted the work done as objectively as possible'' and this was the basis of the documents for the Pentagon Papers leak by Daniel Ellsberg who was arrested under the Espionage Act.
The covering up of leaks and then direct involvement by people of that sort in the Watergate scandal is why I say certain domestic corruptions were involved in Nixon's downfall that can be traced to repression of the press during Viet Nam.
I think Nixon judged other cultures well from their perspectives though, and the causes of the war weren't his but stemmed earlier in history for that matter. I think he was the last great intellectual president after Kennedy, and Johnson, the last one to hold real power over the whole political world, a giant of his time, making his downfall all the more compelling and fascinating.

@@amateur_football9751 agree - - - The most famous collision in U.S. Navy history occurred at about 2:30 a.m. on August 2, 1943, a hot, moonless night in the Pacific. Patrol Torpedo boat 109 was idling in Blackett Strait in the Solomon Islands. The 80-foot craft had orders to attack enemy ships on a resupply mission. With virtually no warning, a Japanese destroyer emerged from the black night and smashed into PT-109, slicing it in two and igniting its fuel tanks. The collision was part of a wild night of blunders by 109 and other boats that one historian later described as “the most screwed up PT boat action of World War II.” Yet American newspapers and magazines reported the PT-109 mishap as a triumph. Eleven of the 13 men aboard survived, and their tale, declared the Boston Globe, “was one of the great stories of heroism in this war.” Crew members who were initially ashamed of the accident found themselves depicted as patriots of the first order, their behavior a model of valor.
The Globe story and others heaped praise on Lieutenant (j.g.) John F. Kennedy, commander of the 109 and son of the millionaire and former diplomat Joseph Kennedy. KENNEDY’S SON IS HERO IN PACIFIC AS DESTROYER SPLITS HIS PT BOAT, declared a New York Times headline. It was Kennedy’s presence, of course, that made the collision big news. And it was his father’s media savvy that helped turn an embarrassing disaster into a tale worthy of Homer. < > HISTORY NET

There's much about Nixon that I admire, but he did have an ethics problem, not in terms of corruption, but with his win at all cost approach towards politics. I imagine there must have been some begrudging respect towards Nixon from Kennedy in that how did this working class kid from a small town in California become vice-president at age 39 vs Kennedy with all his family money and privilege.
I think in a strange way, Nixon had an advantage over Kennedy in that his life experience was something that far more Americans at the time could identify with. And his personal insecurities (which were on display) were similar to the average American at the time.

Nixon always wanted to be Kennedy's friend. When they were freshman house members they did a mini-debate (I believe it was in Pennsylvania) and travelled back to DC together, sharing a sleeper on the train and having a good time. Joe Kennedy told Nixon that if Jack didn't get the nomination in 1960 he would support of him over Johnson or Humphrey. When Kennedy had his back surgery as a senator Nixon went out of his way to accommodate him, to check on his recovery etc. in a very sincere manner. He was genuinely concerned for him. But Kennedy treated Nixon like he treated most people outside of his inner circle, rather shabbily. Kennedy did stick up for Nixon over the way Ike treated him, calling Ike a cold hearted SOB but that had to do with how Ike treated Kennedy as well. Everyone wanted be Kennedy's friend and by and large he didn't have time for most of them.

That’s sort of forgotten about Kennedy. He had few friends and was rather dismissive of people who weren’t in his circle. I mean just look up how he treated LBJ. There’s even tapes of Kennedy making fun of Nixon personally so they were never friends clearly but admired each other.

@@rhondabitler5474 JFK knew he needed Johnson in 1960 so he brought him on as VP but they were never close. Kennedy was warry of Johnson's habit of making whatever office he held more important than it had been before he arrived. But he did treat him decently, about as decent as most VP's get treated. He gave him stuff to do like running NASA and the Committee on Equal Employment Opportunity but he didn't have any real power in either job so he got bored, moped, and drank a lot. Kennedy tried to pump up his ego by sending him overseas. It was also a way to get him out of his hair. Bobby had him in his sights and word is LBJ was planning on making a deal with JFK on November 23 1963 where he would walk away from the ticket if Bobby would call off the hounds and stop leaking dirt to the Senate committee that was looking into corruption during his time as Senate Majority Leader. But the day before that could happen Kennedy rode in the motorcade in Dallas and the investigating into LBJ went away all on its own.
