I just bought one of these from my mate who has a old gun shop more like a museum , he has loads of interesting things , have wait till this bs lockdown is over to get it , it will go nicely with my 1950 long branch no 4 , I also have a custom 1903 Springfield in 30-06/and a custom Mauser 98 in 264 win mag made by Vemon arms in the Midlands uk , the Springfield is my avatar, I didn’t pay more than 450 quid sterling for any of them, I’ve seen at the range a 45 acp converted Enfield , the 223 cheap the run and a good foxing cal atvb Steve from wales 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿

Interesting article and clearly It's been put together very well. Looks a good thing that does what you wanted so hard to pick fault with that. A shame that the receiver had to be modified because otherwise it's all reversible to original given a new barrel and bolt head. Thing is, we worry about loss of originality on such projects while, in the background, thousands of serviceable historic arms are welded up as wallhangers or chopped up and destroyed every year.
I have a Lee-Enfield project in the offing (when everything else settles down!) so no doubt people will be telling me about "ruining authenticity" soon - although the donor rifle has none left. Reminds me - weren't we supposed to be doing a collaborative remote video about training rifles? Been difficult in these strange times but perhaps we ought to try again? Keep up the good work!

Greetings from sunny Malta! That's a nice conversion - great idea and not just a training rifle but an excellent shooter in itself. I run a 1944 Savage No.4 in .303 here and an AIA No.4 Mk4 in .308. which I found brand new in a shop here, built 2002 I think. Having used the No.8 in the Irish Army reserves back in the day I applaud your .223 conversion, nice one mate!

@@dsar9489 Yes indeed, so I've read. I think you can be lucky with the assembly of these rifles, mine had a badly drilled pic rail which required re-alignement but other than that it's a superb shooter that I've taken out to 800m with an S&B 6x42 hunting scope. Useful on piggies in Sicily too!

The .223 is no slouch I have a Full Bore target rifle built on a Remington 700 SA with a 28" 1:8" twist Tobler barrel Jewel trigger
and Central sights most projectiles shot were 69 grain SMK's and later 70 grain Berger VLD had very good results with 80 grain SMK's
in any sight matches the 80 grainers shoot as good if not better than the 155 Sierra PALMA bullets at 1000 yards in a steady breeze
gusty conditions upset them a bit,, Switched to F class when it started up, my eyesight was rubbish even with proper shooting glasses

I’ve gotten a No.4 MkII rifle that’s been dolled up to replicate ( externally ) a No.5 rifle and it’s had the same .223 conversion treatment but it doesn’t follow the pattern of your gun from T-bone so I’m thinking it’s an ambitious home job that to be fair does work and cycle just like a normal Enfield rifle but it’s interesting to see the difference between a well equipped home job and a professional job 😂

I'd love to see T-Bone do a magazine feeding .22 Lee Enfield since the only one in properly produced is the No.7 which in it's entirety would cost similar, if not more than your 223 conversion.
Apart from that there are the 22 hornet rifles produced by Lithgow thay can be dropped into Smle furniture. But .22 hornet is not the greatest calibre.
Keep up the great content Rowan.

A training rifle should be chambered in the best cartridge you can buy in bulk quantity (or make yourself) at the best price. Here in the states .22 lr and 7.62x39 are roughly equal in price depending on where you go and whom you talk to. So right now, (atleast in the states) even .22lr isn’t the best cartridge for a training rifle.

More Rounds down range is always a benefit.
This rifle fills more than single niche for me, opening up the sport of Target rifle, a new division within Millitary rifle, more effectively learning the effects of wind, plus a rapid fire trainer.... so it's difficult to quantify a direct dollar for dollar "return on investment" equation.
