100% true, base game had less XP/items drop since it had shorter area, no monster spawn "totems", less items, shrines, caves, chests and synergy. A pet build for example was nearly impossible before DLC
Glad I wasn’t an early adopter. A friend got me into GD when all the current expansions, and almost all the QOL updates were in play. I’d probably still play the heck out of it, but I can really appreciate the evolution now. Thanks!
It wasn't terrible back then, i got the game 3 months after it released, but I didn't play it a lot until recently. Game is so damn good right now.
I played the base game until act 2, didn't have a lot of fun with it and dropped the game. Saw Necromancer coming with AoM and figured I'd give it a shot, after that GD became my favorite ARPG. My first character to hit level 94 was a Cabalist vitality build. I love how flexible the Necro is in this game you can make so many cool combos with other classes. The search function on the stash and devotions are such a great quality of life features.
Currently only base game here, search in devotions is in, not sure if by a patch but its in.

I played when it first became available and I had finished it then forgot about it. I came back a year ago and have been playing ever since. The upgrades were awesome and extended my enjoyment. Currently I have 413 hours total and FFXIV has been interfering with playing this. But I think it's a good thing to take a break from a game so you don't burn out on it.

OMG! Has it been soo long that I forgot about all those pesky things in the base game. So glad they put in all the little things that make it so much easier. But I do remember the partial items, man that was so annoying. You had to manualy assemble them one by one. Farming Kilrian stones and Ectoplasms over and over was soo boring. Long live DLC! Thanx for the trip down memory lane.

I played the base game through on normal. Did every quest and shrine, did a bit of grinding. At the end of normal I bought the two expansions, since I enjoyed the base game so much. I haven't even set foot in elite yet and my first character is level 69. Finished Malmouth, working through forgotten gods now. Drops in general seem better and more frequent now that I've gotten the expansions.
Bought the base game in 2018 didn't play it until Necropolis POE came out (trash). Decided to play realized that it is an amazing game, then realized that the DLCS actually matter and stopped playing till the dlcs go on sale.
Luckily they go on sale frequently. And there’s a new expansion coming this year.

I believe I was at level 70 when I reached Loghorrean for the first time on veteran difficulty. That was before I bought dlcs. I didn't really farm anything, just explored the whole map and got some reps to honored.
Right now, when I make self found (no gear / blueprints from previous characters) character I'm at around level 60 there, WITHOUT: clearing roguelikes, doing FG content (only unlocking reputation) and without full exploration (only going to areas that are necessary for quests or where shrines are located).
I think you would really have to rush the game to be at level 50 at the end of act 4.
I’ve recently been doing a build guide in the base game. In Normal I collected every shrine, did every quest, cleared Steps of Torment and Port Valbury and I was still under 50 at the end of Act 4. Definitely did not rush, and did a fair amount of gear farming. Different experiences for different players I suppose. I’m in Ultimate now, just reached Homestead, and I’m level 77.
@@Arcadelife1 No idea how would that happen. Currently I even tend to "limit" my experience gain while grinding rep / components on a fresh character to avoid getting "empty levels" - without new devotion points and gear. So, since you get less experience from low level enemies and the enemy cannot be lower than 10 levels than you to give reputation, exp and purple components I do the following:
- Warden's lab only scale to around level 30, so I only farm aether crystals when I reach around level 39-40. By that time, if I join the Order of Death's Vigil it's also a nice rep farm.
- Cronley hideout only scale to around level 37 so I go there to get honored with Devil's crossing at around level 45.
- First level of Arkovian Undercity only scale to around level 40 so I go here at around level 49-50 to get to honored with Rovers.
And when I played for the first time I was more concerned with overleveling the zones, especially because there was no level-scaling up to 100 on elite like now.

Thank you, i bought the base game first to see if I enjoyed the game first. And i do, quite a bit. I did not know what came with the DLC's. So clearly I will be buying those to get the most out of building a Character from scratch. Thanks again
Talking about stash. So far i am happy with the space, my highest level is like leve 48 tho. The thing that really hurts is not having a search bar to sort trough items. I gotten used to it tho. Thanks for this vid, i feel better already about only playing base.
Played the base game, no dlc, made it to level 50 on normal, and found 32 shrines. idk what you decided to skip but if you literally do everything it comes out even and balanced.

Regarding shrines, in the base game with no DLC installed there are only 28. There are 4 extra ones in the base game with the DLCs installed. I’m assuming when you say ‘no dlc’ you mean you didn’t enter any dlc expansion areas but you do have the full game installed. So you still have totems, more devotion choices, and all the other enhancements of the DLCs.
I have 236 hours playing the base game, have only 1 character (pyromancer) and still don't finish my build. I've see so many guides talking about items (weapons, armor, components, etc), but the base game loot is so harsh and low! Waiting for a steam sale to buy the dlcs...
I think you just talked me into getting the DLC. Have around 90 hours so far and yes I can see some of the improvements in the DLC would make it easier! The storage space and lack of sorting makes me crazy. Had to make banks just to keep some stuff because I'm too new to know what I'll need for other builds. And it takes a bit of questing just to get to access storage.
I've watched your Dual Pistol Purifier entirely and even ended up making the build myself. It was so much fun. And I enjoy your Fresh Start series in general - I love the rags to riches kind of lets play. Would you be so kind and bring some Vitality caster from scratch to this series? Like a Ritualist or Cabalist or something. I would love to see how you approach such character while made from scratch.
Love your vids! I remember how clunky the game felt to me when I initially bought it without dlc's. I wanted to make a Whirlwind build but then realized that I don't have access to Oathkeeper class 😂😂 that's a bummer. Though the base game can be pretty rough at times it is still fun. It kinda reminds me of Diablo 2 with and without the Lord of Destruction expansion.

Yeah, the dlc didn't exist when i did my first play through. Died a lot.
One other thing I noticed now that my HC character maxed at 85th lvl is that the highest level items are 75, near as I can tell. No mythicals, no 84 lvl MI. And no transmuting items from one set piece to another. You get what you get. And good drops are more rare. So if your goal was to do Dalia's Secret Quest or fight Mogdrogen, it could be a REAL challenge!
Yeah, there are many reason why the game overall feels easier with the DLCs. They added harder endgame bosses, but the quality of life is also massively improved.
This should be included in every elementary school program!

Yeah. I have a Fire AAR Sorcerer and I farmed a lot for Aether to Fire conversion in the base game. There's like two items in the base game: some trash drop shoulders and some Valbury MI in order to barely reach 75% conversion. In the DLC you get the 100% conversion recipe from some vendor. Don't get me started on trove runs for Desolation blueprint for Agrivix relic. DLCs make the game easier when it comes to best-in-slot gear hunting.

Agreed m8, just came back to GD and tried LE .... since it was a new equivalent to GD. Played about 4 hours with a Rogue character and haven't touched it since. Immediate off puts for me, no weapons switching option, and (kind of heretical here) but ARPG's with fixed cams drive me nuts.
The base game is missing so many QOL features, it almos feels like a paid demo at this point :) I enjoyed it anyway.
Huh, this could explain that little niggle I always have when I play Grim Dawn. I can't really explain the feeling except that at some point I stop really enjoying it like I know I should.
Now if only the DLC's would go on sale maybe I could finally complete the collection.
I bought the base game and finished normal, then downloaded the dlc and started again. This game needed the 2 proper expansions, just for the maps. If I ever play it again I will be enjoying mods, hopefully by then there will be more maps as well.

Ouch I see what you mean. It's been a LONG time. Bought Malmouth in 2018 and FG not too long after it came out. No iron bars, potions of clarity or merits either. Yuck!
Personally, if i get to 85... and find it frustrating or not fun, because obviously i've been playing for a long time to get to 85, plus the other characters. Then i will just quit playing, no problems, no frustration, i wouldn't think about it too much. And pick it up after a while, refreshed. The game is good, and that's saying a lot in today's gaming market.

If the game gets too easy i would have dropped it already. Hopefully doesn't become too grindy. That's all i, personally, expect.
Patch 1.2 has reduced some of the grind, specifically boss-farming for unique gear items - the majority now have a 100% drop chance. I’m not sure how/if this affects the base game but I’m assuming it works the same there.
Base game is so much closer to TQ, and TQ has QOL issues lol

Some. Stash is still prehistoric, there are no totems, no merits, no xp pots … still the base game. However, I am doing a ‘no dlc’ build guide at the moment, vid should be up soon.
D4 has a worse stash than current GD.
Current GD’s stash (with the DLC enhancements) is reasonable, particularly with the search function. I don’t have personal experience of D4’s stash but I’m happy to accept your opinion that it’s not as good as GD’s.
@@Arcadelife1 way less space and no search. GD's is still not enough. I like to collect one copy of every rare/epic/legendary or whatever theyre called and I can't fit them all.
oh also it's all a shared stash. your characters don't even have a personal stash. so you take the space problems and it goes exponential with alts. decent game but absolutely ludicrous lack of QOL. They'll probably sell us stash tabs.

I absolutely encourage anyone playing (and enjoying) the base game to get the two expansions. Plus the third one coming out this year.
This video is just pointing out that the overall experience of the base game feels harder than with the DLCs due to the enhancements introduced by those expansions. The game is still good either way.
