I totally agree, schools in the UK are abysmal at helping dyslexic students. I am dyslexic and I was really shy so I had no way to communicate to the teacher what I did and didn’t understand as my writing was just a mess, I have forced myself to become a decent reader but it wasn’t easy and now 2 years out of academy I have gone back into education and am doing great but I got there by myself where if the school system knew how to do it’s job I would have not struggled the way I did through school. I could never follow what was written on the white board anywhere near as quickly as my peers. It’s not all bad through dyslexic people through they are worse at hyper focused work like writing, reading, spelling, in some cases de coding numbers (I am terrible at memorising long strings of numbers I have lived in my house for 15 years now and I still don’t know my house phone number off by heart). Dyslexic people on average do however have an easier time seeing the bigger picture, I’ve heard the phrase “missing the tree but seeing the entire forest” being used. Examples of this can be in fields such as art, architecture and business just as three examples. Over all I see dyslexia as less of a handicap and more of a trade off but it favours modern schooling poorly which is why so many struggle, considering something like one 5th of people in the UK are diagnosed with it means the advantages it comes with must have been selected for over the years. Good work making this video I don’t think dyslexia has enough awareness especially within the educational sphere and the more it is understood in schools the more people are going to leave schools having actually learnt something. Sorry for rambling once I get one thought out I need to get three to four other related thoughts out. 😅

I feel I get a lot more help in uni, but school and colleges in the uk are not great for dyslexics. It would be nice if teacher could some more knowledge on Dyslexia so people who need help can get it. I haven’t heard that saying before “missing the tree but seeing the entire forest” but it makes sense. When I try to explain things (in exams) I am always told I’m missing easy mark because I just straight to the big stuff.

Michelle Berry Blog That’s definitely true perhaps more dyslexic people should go into teaching to help the the students with dyslexia and grow understanding for it in schools. It’s not the easiest line of work for dyslexic people to go into but I hope more dyslexic people find there way into the profession. I have also been told something similar during my University studies, that my answers were great but lacked proper structure in delivery. So I understand where you’re coming from when you say you focus on the larger points first when writing an essay. I can see this sort of trend in other historical figures with dyslexia, Winston Churchill for example was dyslexic and he was far more focused on the wider geopolitical situation rather than the nitty gritty of his ever day duties and administration,I mean there was a war going on but even when he came back for a second time during a more peaceful period he was far more concerned with Anglo-American relations and the Cold War than the the every day running of the country. I believe it’s actually one of the best dyslexic traits and has the potential to do a lot of good for the world I believe it is a good idea for those dyslexics with great ideas for the wider world to surround themselves with highly focused people to help them in either carrying out their goals or patching up their weak points. For example it would be good for someone like Churchill to have a competent administrator by his side while he focused on what he did best.
