They gave "Tom & Jerry: War of the Whiskers" a "T-rated" because "E-10" didn't exist until 2005 and they couldn't label it with a "E" rating so they gave the "T" rating

In House Trap was an absolute childhood staple, especially due to the fact that it has a 2-player split-screen versus mode.

The reason Tom and Jerry talk in the movie was because the studio felt a movie with nothing but slapstick and minimal dialogue wouldn't work, and that hearing the duo actually speak would get people interested. The movie actually began development in the 70's, but it kept running into script problems over not being long enough, not having much of a plot, trouble getting substantial character development, etc... At one point MGM literally tried to make a live action Tom and Jerry movie starring Chevy Chase and Dustin Hoffman as the duo with a script by Bonnie and Clyde/Superman 1-3 writer David Newman.

      @ProjectPlayGaming  11 місяців тому +6

Interesting! It does highlight how difficult it is to translate Tom and Jerry into a big Hollywood movie. Makes more sense to do TV movies or straight-to-video style films if they really felt the need to go feature-length.

@@ProjectPlayGaming Yeah, and even then at first they had trouble making them long enough, as The Magic Ring, the first to the direct to video movies, was just barely an hour long. Even the shortest of the direct to video Scooby movies was longer than that.

The Master System/Game Gear version is interesting, as buried in the code is a completely different title screen for the game without "The Movie" moniker, so either Sega were developing the game before they knew about the movie, or it's a back up incase they lost the license.

Tom & Jerry Tales was one of the first games I ever had for the GBA as a kid so I'm fairly nostalgia biased for it, though even my younger self wouldn't defend it as a "good" game. I liked it for what it was but the platforming drove me crazy and those 2D levels were the bane of my existence as a child. I still have so many memories of collecting all the cheese in a level, being so close to an exit, then just falling in water... Other than that the mini games weren't half bad in my opinion. It got pretty repetitive but overall an okay game for me.

I have a theory about why the game at 7:27 doesn't have sound during gameplay. It is probably due to processing power. You can clearly notice that the game is struggling to run at a stable FPS as it is, so making the console(pc?) have to process audio too would make it run even worse. Since the game over screen is basically just a black screen, they have a lot of processing power to spare, and therefore they could include audio in it.

Dude i loved House Trap when i was a kid!! My favorite weapons were the frying pan and the bowling ball because the sound when you hit Tom with them was too funny, it was pure slapstick comedy sounds, the ROBO CAT boss fight was difficult as shit but it was a well deserved break from fighting Tom over and over again...
There are 3 extra missions were the gimmick is different from killing each other, in each one there was a certain item that you had to collect and take it to "your goal" like a "capture the flag" kind of thing, in the baby chicks level Jerry had to find them and release them into the pond while Tom had to cook them on the stove, in another Spike was sleeping on the main room and Jerry had to wake him up by playing an air instrument while Tom had to throw them to the trash, and the final one was about Tom bringing valentine presents to Toodles while Jerry had to throw them in the trash.
Every one or two battles, a random power up would appear in a room and the game tells you were to find them, there was a steak that recovers your health but you are vulnerable while eating it, a power protein that boosted your attack and an invisible ink that i never could figure out what it does because your character dissapeared.
All of these levels and power ups were references to episodes of the show itself, so you could tell that the team behind the game really took their time to reference as many episodes as possible and i really appreciate that extra effort because i loved the show as a kid.
The music was also very memorable, even now 15+ years later i still hum some of the songs when i remember them out of the blue, i just wished i had a friend to play 2 player and finally be able to pick Tom.

Honestly, the weird thing about Tom & Jerry games is that almost all of them were essentially my introduction to some retro consoles, and retro gaming as a whole. Tom and Jerry the Movie was my first exposure to the Master System, Tom and Jerry on SNES was my first exposure to the console outside of the Virtual Console series, and both Mouse Trap and Mouse Hunt were my gateway games into becoming obsessed with classic gaming, as from that point, I'd endlessly search around Game Boy and Playstation libraries until it eventually came to the Amiga, Genesis, etc. UA-cam back in the day just had this ability to suck you into a recommended click void that you didn't want to escape, and that's what Tom and Jerry did for me, but I'd be here all day if I told more of my stories with these games.

House Trap on the PS1 unlocked a real nostalgic treasure chest there.
One note about the "pointless distractions" like the TV and radio - they're actually traps you and Tom can set to deliberately stall your opponent. You can also sneak by them if you know they're set to avoid triggering them.

I still have fond memories of playing both Tom & Jerry games: fists of furry and war of the whiskers. The former might look primitive yes but still I had great time playing it (that was one of my early PC games I got when I was a kid) while the latter improved on basically everything (enviorment , combat, animation and rage meter). Even in my mid-20’s for once in a while I’m booting up these games and memories of hours spent on unlocking everything in these titles will never go away.😊

The goal of Hunting High And Low is to beat all the levels AND collect all the cheese. If you didn't get all the cheese after beating the final level you get sent back to the start to play through the levels again to collect the ones you missed, which is why you suddenly won the game from picking up a random cheese somewhere - that was the last one you were missing.

    • @ProjectPlayGaming

@@ProjectPlayGaming Actually after looking for a emulated copy to replay the game, I found the actual answer - the most commonly available version on the internet is a cracked and trained version that enables a bunch of cheats by default (you can turn them off) - in addition to freezing the timer and making Tom unable to hurt you, it also reduces the number of cheese you have to collect from all 50 to just 10. This is the one you were playing in the video - it's why you randomly won so fast and why the difficulty was so nonexistent. The actual, untrained version is HARD.
But yeah, the goal is to get every cheese in the game, and if you miss one you do have to go back for it (you don't get sent back to the start, I think that might've been in the sequel). The time limit is steep though, so it's more of a theoretical thing - if you reach the final level and missed a cheese near the end of the second to last, you'll MAYBE have the time to be able to return for it, but any further back than that is largely impossible.

Nice work! I'm super impressed by what you did here. It must have taken a whole lot of time and effort, but the result is the only video you'll ever need to watch covering all the Tom & Jerry games. There sure are a *lot* of them too. I love how very thorough you were, and all of your info is very accurate. My only criticism is that I kind of wish you would have told us the developer of each game, but that can very easily be forgiven because you did that damn good of a job. I mean, you even covered those mobile games! 95% of people wouldn't have bothered with them, but you went the extra mile. Subscribed.
Man, I had no idea there was a sequel to Fists of Fury, and I'm very surprised to learn of it. That game was not considered by any means to be very good. I guess NewKidCo really believed in the idea.

Tom & Jerry Chase is pretty much DBD with T&J characters, the mice must find at least 5 cheeses and shove them into mouse holes around the map, shoving the cheese into the hole requires some time and can be reduced by having multiple mice shoving the same cheese together (again, much like DBD). The cat's job is exactly like Killers from DBD, hit the mouse at least twice, bring them to the nearest Rocket-shaped firework, and tie the mouse to it. Every character has different active abilities, including their variants, for example, Detective Jerry doesn't have the same ability as regular Jerry, En-Garde Tom doesn't have the same ability as regular Tom, and so on. The maps contain various stuff and furniture that both factions can interact with, either as a trap to the opposing faction or as mobility.
I played it a few years ago, the game is honestly pretty good, love the aesthetic of the game and how smooth every character's movement is, but as many people probably know, having Netease as the publisher isn't always the best idea, I mean I live in Asia and yet I keep having my PING gone up to the roof, even until now the game still has terrible PING, I know this because I tried it once more 2 months ago only to deleted it again afterward, the game is also slightly P2W which isn't surprising.
EDIT: forget to add what happened after all 5 cheeses have been shoved lol, so this is where the game gets really intense, a random wall on the map will have a crack on it, all the mice must work together to break open the crack and escape through it by hitting the crack on the wall with stuffs like dinnerware, box of fruits, even using their abilities until the crack's HP reaches 0 and a big hole will appear on its location. The cat, again, must prevent this to happen. Note that only 1 crack will appear on every match so everyone will basically goes to the same spot.

So there are full English versions of Tom and Jerry Chase, including voice acting, that you can easily download from APK sites, and they work and connect with the other versions all the same. The most you'll have to do for account connection is make a Line account, which is just Asia's version of SMS and is available internationally. You don't need to make a sketchy chinese only account or anything, and you don't need to rely strictly on emulation if you have an android phone.
    - Note that since all the servers are in Asia, you're going to experience ping issues, unless you play with bots.
    - All the controls are button based, so you'll have to bind them to your keyboard or controller if you're going to emulation. You don't need to use your mouse.
    - Anything that costs money is almost purely cosmetics. Everything else is usually buying additional characters to your roster, but those can be unlocked by playing the game and purchasing with the basic in-game currency. Everything else is unlocked and upgraded by playing the game.
    - The game did start off with the original cast of characters, but more recently they've implemented original characters or thorough redesigns of one-off unnamed characters.

The 'Spy vs Spy' gameplay take on it (which i haven't played but judging from gameplay looks similar) they had something really good going on in terms of concept at least, it's the most fitting 'Tom and Jerry' game to me because it's two characters trying to win out each other by hitting each other, throwing objects at each other and even setting up traps in the level for either of them to fall into without knowing or being careful, even if a lot of aspects of the game could be considered barebones, the music is fantastic and sounds like it could be from the show even if it's original, the multiplayer aspect can be quite fun, this is one that i feel that if it had more polish and even have a PC port so that players can have their own screen via LAN Multiplayer, had more content, more polished gameplay and bigger refined levels that isn't just The house like a maybe dark alley, supermarket, you name it like a way to re-create the different areas and scenarios they end up and such would've been the perfect recipe for a unique Tom and Jerry game that would've stand out from the rest ... but instead Tom and Jerry War of the Whiskers's multiplayer being the potential best option out of all of the games that has come out and even then that is if people enjoy the kind of Arena Brawler game experience it offers, it doesn't appeal to me too much.
Either way, it's sad to me that the game that has the most attention and a most respectable amount of content is on an Asian mobile game that we can't even play even with emulation (or not without going through a bunch of walls just to play it) and even then could be questionable considering its microtransactions because i don't believe it doesn't have any that may or may not impact general gameplay or access to the juicy stuff
My best experience with the Tom and Jerry games is the Sega Genesis one with a fan patch and Tom and Jerry in House Trap and even then with me being biased and kind of blinded by nostalgia I'll still say that is still depressing to see
I am still glad you covered all of the games and gave your take, it was definitely entertaining and informative!

I can totally see the appeal of House Trap as a multiplayer game!

I only remember playing the Ds tom and jerry tales, and yes, you can complete in like 2 hours.

I remember some Tom and Jerry games on Sky Games. (Which were games you played on your TV.) One was T&J Dynamice which was a Bomberman clone, and the other was T&J Food Fight which had Jerry jumping on pies to collect them while avoiding Tom. (This one got reskinned with other licenses like SpongeBob and I’m a Celebrity) There was also one called Cartoon Carnage which was essentially Worms with three teams; Tom, Jerry and Spike, Scooby Doo, Shaggy and Scrappy, and Mac, Bloo and Coco from Foster’s home.

I’ll have to see if I can find any of them! I wonder how many of them were just continuously reskinned into different franchises.
