    Love the orange RX! Put them in all my depron scratch builds, a really cheap way to fly rc! Thanks for the review Bruce.:-)

    I like these little Rx's too because I fly in a low noise no crowd environment. The next model up has the sat port and I fly that setup in a 2M sailplane to visual limits. Removing the shell and adding some shrink tube allows for tucking these into a small corner of the fuse. Amazing item for the price.

      Using Sat port ✓ sounds like a plan

    these new orange receivers are very very good, compared to the old ones those who came without a case. I tried this same one on my parkzone Radian and sent it way up high in the sky without a problem, now i am using a 9ch Orange on my 80 inch sebart sukhoi 140 (1500 bucks plane) and its working perfectly there too.
    Bruce, its been a while since i last watched one video of yours and your KiwiEnglish still entertains me a lot, also reminds me of wonderful NZ :) :)

    These are brilliant receivers... Had them in my glider flying until it's a dot and never failed. Tested it a few weeks ago on the ground to 2.1km with stock dx6i tx... Will go further but ran out of road!

    These receivers use diversity. You can see tracing back from ANT1 and ANT2, it goes through a matching cap into an RF switch IC (the black square on the furthest left), then out of the RF Switch it hits the balun matching network then into the main RF Chipset.

    • @xjet
      @xjet 10 років тому +1

      Yes, I forgot to put that on the video. I will check to see whether it switches the antennas intelligently or whether it simply alternates between them (as some other brands do).

    This may apply to anyone using a real Spektrum TX and some other DSM2 receivers; although I've also seen good reliability from HK Orange RSM2 receivers.
    I've been experimenting with the Hobbyking Micro Multiwii board with a DSM2 receiver on board and a real Spektrum TX module in a 9X. On the bench there are a lot of connection drop outs, sometimes 10+ seconds to reconnect. It could be wifi interference, but the wifi around here is not that busy. It doesn't matter too much for bench testing, but I would want to proove it on the ground over a distance before flying. I have only ever used the Spektrum TX module with small BNF models before, with no problems.
    I recently bought a Orange DSM RX (long antenna) and satellite for range testing after we had some 2.4G reliability questions late last year at a local field field.
    Always range test and know your gear before flying.

    The module actually does do DSMX Bruce. The light on it will blink and tell you which mode it's in once bound with the RX.
    Working Modes
    DSM2 2.4GHz Transmitter Module has four working modes. Power on the radio and the LED on
    the back shows the current working mode like in the below table.
    LED Working Mode
    -------------------------------------
    OFF DSM2 1024/22ms
    * DSM2 2048/11ms
    ** DSMX22ms
    *** OSMX 11ms
    One flash means DSM2 two flashes mean DSMX and three mean OSMX. I've tested it against both DSM2 and DSMX and it did give the proper indication.

    I've used the R615, and 620 in all of my planes, for over 2 years now. I use them with my Spektrum radio. Anything from park flyers to my .46 Christen Eagle II and my 1968 Andrews Aeromaster .60. I have NEVER had any issues and the range is great. BEST bang for the buck, if you ask me! My Spektrum RX's are the only one's I've ever had an issue with.

    Thanks Bruce, been waiting a long time for this review, albeit as you say past its use by date. What would be appreciated is a review of this TX module and the newer Orange R800X receiver (claimed to be DSMX), and investigate the whole DSM & DSMX modes of operation on an analyser as mentioned by Topxe below.

    One "issue" with these receivers is that there is a failsafe that kicks at signal loss. That means if you accidentally turn off the transmitter first the motor starts to spin! Apart from that this is a great receiver!

    Question: Any idea why OrangeRx puts out their own T-Six (DSM2 xmtr), a DSMX xmtr module, but not DSMX native xmtr? Or to put it another way, why not upgrade the TSix to DSMX? Thoughts?

    Bruce, I know this is an older review. I use Spektrum transmitters and I've had very good luck with the Lemon brand of DSMX compatible receivers. They have true diversity antenna receivers and satellites. I'd love to see a comparison between the Lemon and Spektrum DSMX receivers.

    If it hasn't been mentioned already, I wanted to point out the flashing light is for signal loss. I am not sure that it is for low voltage situations. Also wanted to say the OrangeRx 6 channels have actually worked pretty well for me.

    Been using orange receivers for 6 years now and only had one drop out, and I think that was down to a dodgy lipo rather than the rx. So no complaints from me. Dsm2 may be outdated but it's served me well and continues to do so. Besides, it would cost me a bomb to change out all my models now and buy a new tx. If it works, use it!

      Been using DSM2 in our club since it came out and have had no evidence of a problem in actual use. True, in theory and on the bench it's not as robust, but we haven't found a problem in a busy club environment.

    Chinglish is always entertaining, I just received my Assan Dual Receiver switch and the manual has this little gem: Dual Receiver Switch (Wireless Buddy Box System) make your R/C system more flexible and safety than before, if you understand the operate principle. It's easy to use as Training/Pilot, FPV, Co-operate Flying model, Safe control etc. we made this smart kids and you can got funnier in R/C world than before.

    I use that TX module in my Taranis and 9x to fly my mCPX in DSM2 mode and 130X in DSMX mode. Yes, it does work with DSMX. It's a bit annoying to change
    modes, you have to click the button on the back 3 times quick and there are 4 modes you have to cycle through. It has two DSM2 (11ms and 22ms) and two DSMX (11ms and 22ms) modes. I don't have any Spektrum RX that work with the 11ms frame mode so I haven't tested that but the 22ms in DSM2 and DSMX seems to work fine.

    Orange now has some DSMX receivers for sale at hobbyking. Could you please do a review of one? Possibly with the frequency analyzer to make sure they're actually hopping around 2.4 like they're supposed to? Here's hoping.

      Sarcastic mode is on hey Walter ;-) ? But actually I do agree...
      Read that many people have had occuring signal problems with the old model Orange receivers like R610/615 when using it with a Spektrum transmitter (like DX6i), so not 100% compatible. But the more recent R620 seems to do a much better job, so you better buy that one if you still want Orange rx with Spektrum tx.

    I have a question that I hope you can answer. I have an older Orange 6 channel DSM2 transmitter. Can these bind to a Spektrum receiver? I can't get it to bind to my AR636B in my Turbo Timber and I suspect the radio is too old. The AR636B manual says it should work with any DSM2/DSMX radio. Any ideas?

    Thnx for the video Bruce. For my part i find safe to use those OrangeRX for my light foamies, light balsa & test park flyers. I would not dare try it on Helicopters or more expensive models.I tough U was gonna test a 4ch RX also, no problem.
    I read somewhere that it becomes DSMX if ur receiver is DSMX, not sure. ??

  • @slebetman
    @slebetman 10 років тому

    What that chinglish is saying is that if you bind the module to a DSMX receiver then it will stay in DSMX mode because it can't know what mode the receiver is using. If you bind it to a DSM2 receiver it will stay in DSM2 mode. If you switch between DSMX and DSM2 then you have to rebind. Therefore note down on paper what mode each of your receiver binds in (sometimes a DSMX receiver will bind in DSM2 mode). Admittedly I'm not directly translating the chinglish. It's what I know from browsing the RCGroups thread on the module.

    I have had trouble with the orange receivers with short antenna's, I have had receivers with the wrong length wire (nearly lost a glow model due to these rx's). I LOVE the orange receivers with the longer coax antennas, and have range tested the coax antenna receivers and get better range than Spekturm receivers.

    I own two of these RXs, one on a small micro quad, the other on an Easy Star 1, and I've had a quadcopter crash when this Rx was on that and I went around 500 feet away. This leads me to believe that these are park flyer range, not full range.
    I've moved to FrSky radio systems now and a Taranis Tx.

    • @xjet

      I have being flying a Bixler with the r610+r100 (original orange rx with one antenna and an orange satellite) and after I lost a visual with a model and it fell to the ground I still could control a motor -- heard it from behind a hill (sic!) 700 meters away measured on google maps. I think 700m ground-to ground is pretty good. And r610+r100 vs r615 does not do much difference. More probably You might have some better and not so good instances of the reciever. Or some other factors influencing Your signal.

    • @WVRetreat
      @WVRetreat 10 років тому

      Just to clarify, this R615 receiver is advertised by HobbyKing as a "park receiver." The label on the new version says "park receiver," but the old versions (like this one appears to be) don't say that. The R620 receiver is the "Full Range" version. It has longer antennas and has satellite support. While more expensive than the R615, it still sells at a low price. Just something to keep in mind before buying one their 6-channel DSM2-compatible receivers. Make sure you buy the R620 (with possible satellite) if you need the extra range.

    • @azgarogly
      @azgarogly 10 років тому

      mmerry2 on UA-cam I'm wondering, if there's a real difference rangewise.
      I understand, that HK is able to make more money discontinuing a cheap sattelite enabled 610 for a range "segmented" products. But is there a real difference?
      It would be interesting to see some test.

  • @davereap
    @davereap 10 років тому

    Ive been using these cheap receivers for my foamies and they have all been excellent.
    I even replaced the module in my futaba 10cap so I could use them..
    I am a tight old S** and their low cost is a major factor.. I can have lots of models ready to go.
    whist I might go to an alternative on a costly model, these are fine for all my stuff..
    Their range is definitely more than I can fly at..
    so for indoors and parkfly they cant be bettered

    Bruce, again you just should have asked me!LOL. In the States we have lot's of 2.4 signals bouncing about and the little orange box's do get confused and a loss of control happens! Oh Crap... if you are up high enough it may re-acquire in time. But that is with all 2.4 not just the orange. I have lost signal on Airfield, Dynam, Spektrum and Hobbyking. With some advice from Spoctra50 I switched over to Flysky FS-T6 and have had no problems so far. Just getting used to the new settings and feel of the transmitter. Keep up the good work, Tell Barry I said Hello. I used to say he was my long lost brother when I had my beard but alas, I have lost my beard. So, "Get your butt out the chair and in to the air!"

    I enjoyed your video presentation of the Orange 6CHs DSM2 receiver from Hobbyking. One question I have is how critical is the placement of the receiver antenna's within the plane? I read somewhere, can't find it, that one antenna should be vertical and the other at 90 degrees. Do you have any experience with the suggested placements or lack thereof? Thank you. Dennis Merino

    I'm glad you approve of these cheap receivers.. i have them in many of my park fliers.. also not that its good that you approve, of something but I'm happy you state the obvious .. cheap can be good value.. on a side note , these are the short range version, there is a full range one that i found gives you a yard or 3 more range.. still super super cheap..

    I'm having no end of trouble trying to get these things to bind to my DX8. I connected everything up today and all worked as it should. Great, I 'll go flying next day. Next day at the airfield nothing happened, no yellow flashing light at all. Turned power of the plane to ON (TX still off) and the servo moved, then hit the Bind Button and turned TX on - nothing happened, no lights came on. Dead as a Dodo. Can't figure out what's happening and why it worked ok one day but the next day it didn't want to bind. Any ideas? You mentioned something about a Brown Out on the video. If that happened how does one 'cure it"? I' m open to any suggestion. Great video Bro.

    Do a range test with the OrangeRx Tx module. My brand new Tx module failed and I had a signal loss less than 100 ft away; the Tx module power output was less than 10mw measured on a spectrum analyzer! I had a backup spare Tx module and it measure 108mw, full power! After repairing my quad from the signal loss crash, I was able to fly out past 300m.
    I lengthened one of the 615x Rx antennas to 93mm and it did much better on the range test by at least 20 paces more, so it is worth it for less chance of signal loss.
    Overall I am happy with the combination but I highly recommend testing the Tx module to be sure it is not bad.

    • @captaintripps7354
      @captaintripps7354 9 років тому

      Captain Tripps ...oh and BTW...
      I rigged a mount for the antenna on my transmitter metal bar with a bulkhead SMA female connector so I can mount the Tx antenna on the bar for better positioning. I used a small SMA jumper cable between the Tx and antenna mount. Measured on a spectrum analyzer I got 8db more signal with this method compared to the antenna behind the module with the tip butting up against the metal bar. I agree with the reviewer, the antenna placement design is just plain bad.

    have u use this orangerx to pixhwak ? ( i am using spektrum radio)
    here is 2 question:
    1) when i try to setup the failsafe , and try turn off my radio see what is the the throttle value when i turn it off ( the lowest value is 1088 when the radio is ON, when i turn it off it suppose lower then 1088) . however when i check the radio calibration page at mission planner when i turn off the radio , the throttle value didnt drop at all, it just stay at the value which when i turn off the radio. ( for example if i push to 60% of my throttle before i turn it off, i will stay there ) but the board still able to detect if lose the radio signal and failsafe will kicks in if i turn off the radio (as long as i set the failsafe value is lower then 1088) ... is it safe ? cause when i use same radio rx with PPM Encoder with my other previous build, it will drop the throttle value if i turn off the radio...will it a matter ?
    2) when i arm and try to fly, seems like the throttle is kinda working delay , every time i move the throttle up and down it will move 1 or 2 second delay and wont response immediately .

      For what it's worth, I'm using the Orange DSM2 external module in my Taranis and it works great with my few BnF models. The mode changing that Bruce was reading at the end of the video (from the "manual") is a little annoying... it's almost easier to just re-bind each time you switch models.

    Are u also gonna review the new DSMX version of these receivers? They released em like 1 or 2 days ago, I have a Dx 6i with dsm2/dsmx so I'd gladly get the new ones if they work fine, which I assume they will if they don't wanna screw up the Orx receiver legacy

    So how about the diversity thing? I opened mine and from what i saw the antennas go through a cap each (coupled) to a CMOS switch. I presume the chip switches between antennas and uses the the one with the best signal. Just an educated guess...Bruce please confirm :)

    Just wondering Bruce if it would be worthwhile extending the antenna length to a full wavelength to increase the range and/or give a greater safety factor against drop outs. Cheers mate love ya vids

      They are older versions of the white 10g analog servos that sell under the "HobbyKing" brand. I like them and bought a bag of 30 some time ago because they are so damned cheap :-)

    Hey! I am currently using one of these receivers. Is it possible to extend the length of the receiver antennae? On one of my models I have found that at certain angles, battery pack and motor screen the signal and reduce the range. I have tried repositioning the receiver. I get very similar results with the Orange R615x too. I am hoping to extend the antennae to avoid the issue. Any thoughts folk?

      No, that doesn't matter. The holes are plated right through so the electrical connection will still be 100% good. I note that the pads were *gold* plated!

    This is not a Full Range Receiver. This is a Parkflyer Receiver. Full Rnge Receiver has one long (about 10 cm) antenna. And it works well. Parkflyer also works well. But I prefer newest original AR410 and AR620 due to Telemetry option.

    These don't buddy-box very well. I had this rx bound to a DX6i and buddy-boxed with a DX8. When flying, as soon as i took control back to my DX6i, it took a few seconds before the plane would react. Not great when you want to take over to avoid a crash. We swapped the orange rx for a genuine Spektrum AR600, and all the problems went away.

    This orangerx receiver didn't work so well for me, it made my quad yaw and drift to random directions. I set the sub trims on the TX so that every channel reads 0 on the KK2 and after a few minutes of flying the quad starts drifting and the numbers have changed.
    I replaced it with the OrangeRx R620 and now the quadcopters stays nicely trimmed.

    i just did a range test with my spektrum dx6i, on the 7 channel long range version. In range test mode (low voltage) i only got 25 paces away.normal mode i got 37 paces away. and for shits ans giggle. i did a range test with a genuine spektrum rX (AR115e) which is a micro light park flying 6CH receiver. on range test mode i got 57 paces. and normal mode i got to far away to tell if the servo was moving or not. 98 paces after confirming with my brother. so yeah orange is ok for small stuff. but i wouldnt put big investments up in the air with these anymore. just a scratch build or a small flyer.

    The good thing about brownout warning is You know, if there was a power problem in flight.
    The bad thing is, it works only on Your first flight. As it starts and stays blinking after You change You pack and fly again. Does it?

    • @TignMeg

      You have to re-bind it to reset the led flash mode after a brownout warning.

  • @HolgerAp

    The antenna cables look pretty small. Is that normal, or do you solder a bigger antenna onto them?

    • @TignMeg
      @TignMeg 10 років тому

      The antenna cable length is defined by the frequency being used, For 2.4g a full wavelength is 12.49cm which could be used but manufacturers generally use the more convenient 1/4 wavelength antenna at 3.7cm. Changing the antenna length may stop the receiver working if its not an exact wavelength, half wavelength or quarter wavelength..
