HOW TO : OrangeRX RX3S 3-Axis Flight Stabilizer V2.1

- Fellow pilot,
some of you might have tried the OrangeRX 3-axis stabilizers before.. They have been around for quite a while now. Last year HK released the V2 version of it, and recently they released a identical one but with updates V2.1 firmware.
The real change here is that this one should be able to be used on HS digital servo, where the previous version could not.
Here is my how-to for these stabelisers, and offcourse I'll allso test if they in fact do work with HS Digital servo's!

Dutch you have explained how to hook up this RX3S in simple to understand terms. I like how slow you go so I can follow along with my set up with ease. Thank you for taking the time to post the set up and explaining each switch and hook up procedures. Looking forward to more educational videos in the near future.
Glad to be of service! Thanks for the compliments offcourse :)
Very clear explanation. A video as this helps to save a lot of time and a lot of mistakes because hk no real manuals their priducts. I learned a lot. Thanks for making and share it.
+jumanoc Thank you for the positive feedback sir! First time I tried one of these it indeed took me quite a bit of figuring indeed ;)
This item I think is not easy to explain, but I must say: well done, Roeland :-)
+Detlef Heine Well thank you Detlef! And true.. this is though product to explain well :$
Very useful demo. Thank you.
Thank you! Glad it was usefull for you :)
hey man nice video... not up my alley but well done with the studio like setting everything is bright and clear and easy to see! Hope the weather there turns around soon. cheers mate!
+Mike's RC Corner The weather IS getting a bit better over here mate :) I think I should be able to do some flying tomorrow :)
And thank you! This being such a small thing, it was quite hard to shoot well :$
Thanks for watching & the positive comment offcourse! :D
Cheers
hey buddy i can appreciate a video well presented. it looks nice and the viewer usually has no clue what it involved on what it takes to do something like this. It's not rocket science or earth shattering but it takes time and resources and expertise! Not that I am an expert! LOL
+Mike's RC Corner Thanks mate! :D I appreciate that :)
This video really is aimed at quite a small group of people though.. But I did have some trouble figuring out how to set it up the first time I used one.. So maybe this would help a few people :)
Yeah.. That IS a neat option for FPV!
Thank you very much, it was absolutely priceless.
All honor to you
Thanks Hans :) Good to see even an Old video is still usefull ;)
Hello can I auto tune my APM 2.8 in position hold mode rather than altitude hold mode. Will it work please reply thanks in advance
@DutchRC Adventures no no you didn't get my point. You showed Rox stabilizer in your video . I want to ask that can I use this orx stabilizer with my APM 2.8 to make it more stabilize or can it be just used with planes
You are correct.. I don't understand :D
You want to use a stabelizer together with a flight controller (which is allso a stabelizer).. why would you want to do that?
@@DutchRC okay I don't know that thanks for my help.
No worries :) see it like this:
this ORX is a stabelizer and nothing more (but that allso makes it simple to use)
an APM has far more options.. (allso makes it more complex to use)
Hello. I have the ORX 3axis Ver2. It looks exactly like yours but not labeled RX3S like yours. Will mine work with digital high-speed servos?? Thank you.
I did test mine with digital servo's so your should work as well :)
Thanks 9 minutes in the Gyro reversing the switch, I fiddled for ages as my AUX switch just wouldn't work.
You're welcome! Glad it helped you out! And yes.. that can have you going round in circles ;)
I connect everything as per your video, and i get everything to power up how ever when i tilt my receiver my servos only jitter, if i move my control sticks my servos move correctly! Any idea?
+Alejandro De La Garza Try and increasing the sensitivity to more then you would really want, so you can more clearly see what happens :)
+DutchRC Adventures i díd but all that happens is that when i tilt my plane the servos correct but then immediately return to neutral and dont keep correcting the plane even if still tilted
+Alejandro De La Garza however if i move the servo with the radio the y respond very well
+Alejandro De La Garza Ohwwww O.K.! In that case you misunderstood how a stabeliser works.. A stabeliser indeed does a short correction, and then reverts to it's 'normal' position..
The kind of behaviour you were expecting is what a GYRO does.. Those will indeed keep trying to correct a heading until they succeed..
So.. Stabelisers only dampen unwanted movement.. In short: I think your stabeliser works as it should :)
+DutchRC Adventures oooohhhhhh aaaaaand i just got sent to kindergarden rc :( haha ol i will try it and will see results
Would this stabilizer help with landings, keeping a "Tail dragger" type plane from "nosing over" on landings?? I have a HobbyPeople 1/6th scale EPO Foam P-51D that has a propensity to nose over on landings, no matter where you move the Center Balance or adjust the retracting landing gear.. Everyone that owns one complains of the same problems, so it's not just me ....... kind of tough on Props!. Will this or any stabilizer detect an impending nose over and up elevator to "pin" the tail to the ground? Like most "warbirds", it MUST be landed hot and fast. How would I set the Flight Stabilizer to react this way? Any tips welcomes Dutch!
+Keith Benicek Hi there Keith,
well a stabeliser will make landings easier for Sure. If it would really prevent a nose-over is hard to say. You would probably not be moving along very fast at that point, so I would doubt that the elevator would have enough authority to keep the nose up.
The stabeliser itself will Surely detect the unwanted pitch-forward and try to prevent it. If it would be enough.. Well, I guess it will prevent at least a few nose-overs....
+DutchRC ADVENTURES - Sadly, these nose over do happen while still at a pretty healthy speed, and associated with the plane is still parallel with the ground during the landing process. In confidence a manager at HobbyPeople (mfr) admitted that there is some sort of engineering error in the design so that this P-51D just doesn't want to "put the tail wheel on the ground". It's a wonderful flying plane and takes off easily for a tail-dragger.
I am completely new to 3 Axis Stabilizers, so may I ask, with a model that uses Left and Right independent receiver channels for the Ailerons, how do you connect thru this OrangeRX RX3S Flight Stabilizer ... or is it just not meant for this type of 6-channel model?
Compliments on a very very good video, your English and thank you so much for you timely reply. (I am assuming you are Dutch and in the Netherlands)
+Vintage Cycles You are welcome, and yes.. I do indeed live in the Netherlands :)
Hmm that IS a shame man! Again.. A stabeliser will help a bit, and it might enable you to land slower, as the stabeliser will solve the instability for a good amount.
These stabelisers do not take a seperate-channel ailerons setup into account. You CAN however use them on such a setup. You would only stabelise 1 aileron in that case. You'd basically have about 50% stabelised roll.. (you can compensate that with a higher gain)
For the price of these it might be fun to just do some experimenting with them, as you can remotely turn them off?
I had this problem with my elite P-51 for 6 months flying off grass. My fellow flying buddy figured it out. Place the battery in the factory recommended spot, bring the plane in with two to three clicks of throttle all the way in to touch down and cut the power and pull back on the elevator control. This takes a while to practice but in 20-30 landing we both can land now without tipping over. It truly is a skill. Oh, my flying buddy installed softer and bigger landing wheels. Dubro is the manufacturer. Have fun practicing this.
Although this is an "old" product there is stille some reactions on the video. I got one secondhand gifted myself. It might be usefull tot know that ail-R Input pin is usefull for mounting the gyro upside down. I could only get the gyro aileron gyro response to go the right direction by using that input pin on a delta wing. Reversing the dip switches ( ail and ele combo) does not do this by itself.
Hope this is usefull info to someone, since there is no mention of this in any manual.
Thank you very much for that addition Johan-Mark :) Might indeed benefit someone trying to set one up :)
I have made my own f450 Quadcopter. I am using APM 2.8 with it. Can I use this stabilize to make my drone stable or it can just be used in planes.Plz reply ?????
Howdy sir :) You can definately use an APM flight controller for a quadcopter yes.. I've made several quadcopters that way myself :)
@@DutchRC no no you didn't get my point. You showed Rox stabilizer in your video . I want to ask that can I use this orx stabilizer with my APM 2.8 to make it more stabilize or can it be just used with planes
That top dip switch did it, thanks again.
+67robb Glad I could help :)
Well I sure can't figure it out, what does the on-off wire plug into on the receiver & stabilizer?
+67robb Okee.. on the stabeliser side it's the Aux input that controls shutting the stabeliser on/off (AND you need to slide the top dip-switch..
On your receiver side it depends on what channel Your receiver uses for landing-gear? (on mine it is channel 5.. I use a Futaba transmitter)
Thank You! Just bought this stabiliser and your explanation is very useful!
+Андрей Юрич You are welcome sir! Glad it helped you out :D

Sorry to be so off topic but does someone know of a tool to get back into an instagram account..?
I stupidly forgot the login password. I appreciate any assistance you can give me!
@Zyaire Fisher instablaster :)
@Rene Aldo i really appreciate your reply. I got to the site through google and im in the hacking process now.
Looks like it's gonna take a while so I will get back to you later with my results.
@Rene Aldo it did the trick and I finally got access to my account again. Im so happy!
Thank you so much, you really help me out !
Thanks fellow pilot. You just saved me a whole lot of figuring out.
You're welcome man :) That was what I shot the video for ;)
I like that your video was a no BS guide, very well explained and detailed while remaining focused on the subject.
Thanks man :) I appreciate that
could you tell me where you found the female to female extensions?
Jim
+Jim Birmimgham Hi there Jim :)
Yeah.. on HK itself allthough they've named them wrong:
www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/store/__61681__10CM_Male_to_Male_Servo_Lead_JR_26AWG_10pcs_set_.html
I like this, but how do I set up the on-off switch?
+67robb Thank you :) Well. that would offcourse depend on Your radio. In most radio's you have a (landing-) gear switch.. You could use that channel for instanse..
What's your opinion of the OrangeRX receivers with stabilization? Do they have good range, or is it best to use something like this in addition to the original, say Spektrum, normal receiver?
+Tim Adams I had 2 of those stabelisers with build-in DSM2 receivers.. With both I've had loss-of-control crashes.. So I don't trust the range on those anymore.. For me it's only normal receiver + a stabeliser...
+Tim Adams Hmmm hard to say, but I WOULD be sceptical indeed :)
Those would be used in small planes though I guess.. And you would not fly a small plane far away...
Yeah, good point. Better safe than sorry!
+Tim Adams For sure mate :) Still those little mini receiver might be nice for an ultra-micro build.. :)
True! :)
They are male to male connectors.
The connector goes into the receiver, so they are male connectors, just like bullet connectors, the one that goes into the counterpart, is the male.
Is it the camera angle, or are the aux pins on the stabilizer bent, you can see it in the first minutes of the video.
+Ruud (Ruud G) I must say that I Have received these with the pins (slightly) bent in the past.. In This case it was allright.. I guess it is the camera angle :)
Well.. and if you want to make the same mistake as HK did.. Be my guest.. In my world, connectors with PINS are male.. And connectors with holes are female.. these connectors have Holes..
+DutchRC ADVENTURES Yeah, that is also a way you can see it, that is like bullets, I see the connector as a whole, so with plastic, and in the case of Futaba/JR receiver plugs, that is the plastic connector that goes into the female ( receiver, extention, Y harness etc. ).
I see it that way, and I think there are a lot of people with me :-)
There are a lot of ways to do things in RC, there is not nessecairly one right.
Thanks a lot to to share !! Very clear informations !! You help me a lot to configure The Free Sky Taranis X9D Plus. Again !! Thanks a lot !! It is very appreciated !!
Howdy sir :)
Well super! Glad the video was helpfull man.. That's what I made it for :)
Cheers & happy flying!
Nice job bud... looked good... over my head but sounded good....Pun intended... thanks for sharing.
+RcNickster Ghehe thanks for watching anyway buddy! Yep.. I know this isn't for everybody ;)
Cheers!
Groet & goed weekend!
Very clear, many thanks.
Thank You Adiaan :) Good to read the video helped you out :)
4:16 Those connector are actually Male to Male. The Connector plugs into a shrouded connector that is called the Female connector. It is the connector that is named... not the pins.
I respectfully disagree :) Ohw well.. I guess it is clear in the video of the connector has pins or not ;)
It is your right to disagree.... For some quick and easy reference.

I may be wrong.....
It is indeed just fine to not agree on everything.. But.. please ask yourself if That is a good source of info? Consider how electrical things have been designed, even before RC was around.. Generally female plugs tend to 'give' (electricity).. like a wall socket for instance.. the male part generally received..
Now have a look at JST connectors on lipo's.. Those (red) plugs didn't have the outer sleave in the old days by the way.. Do you really think they went from female into male just because someone added a outer sleave?
Excellent thanks very informative 👍
You're welcome man :) Glad to see the video help you out :)
Great video man! It looked very nice :)
+The RCAddict Thank you! :)
+The RCAddict ohw ps: I received a plane from HK today that isn't even available for purchase yet! How about them apples ;)
DutchRC ADVENTURES Lol nice! So they sent it to you?
+The RCAddict Well sure. Otherwise I wouldn't have it here :P I did pay the normal price for it, but right now. it's only available in another paint-scheme..
DutchRC ADVENTURES Wait, how did you buy it if you cant buy it then?!? MAGIC!
Thank you
+67robb You're welcome! Don't hesitate to ask, if you can't figure it out..
turns out i had mine pointing backwards!
+tab328 That does NOT help sir! :D You can still make it work when reversed, but you would sure be better off when using it as I explained in the video :)
So I noticed! :D I'll fix all that up along with my ailerons! Oh I'm TAB on hobbyking by the way.
Ghehe yeah.. I got that mate ;)
Hope the video & my tips helped!
+DutchRC ADVENTURES Definitely did! thanks!
Cool :) Then I idn't make the video for nothing ;)

Hello can I auto tune my APM 2.8 in position hold mode rather than altitude hold mode. Will it work please reply thanks in advance
I don't think you should have Any other mode enabled when you do a auto-tune really....
@@DutchRC okay thanks a lot again
