Exactly why they got Peter Vaughan. Whether it be anything from a wise, elderly Maester to a seafaring ogre with back problems, you could trust that the assignment was understood.
Ned's death never fails to shock! Aemon's speech to John Snow was fantastically acted - you could feel the rage when he was talking about hearing his brothers and the Targaryen children were slaughtered.
Lets not overstate things, it was one of the more shocking game of thrones episodes but to call it "one of the most iconic episodes of television ever produced" is insane.
You’ll remember earlier when Rob released the Lannister spy and you guys were like “that seems like a bad idea…” But here we see that he used that opportunity to sow misinformation to catch the rival army off guard.
I think Ariana doesn't realise how much she remembers from the books in her subconscious. She kinda spoiled it here with 'they're going to kill him anyway' and seems to be way more astute with things than most reactors (like knowing Joffrey was a bastard in episode 2)
The ending to this episode is so seismic that I almost forgot how many other awesome scenes this episode has. Varys and Ed in the dungeon; John Snow and Maester Aemon; Bronn, Shay and Tyrion drinking. And the most true statement in all the 9 realms... "Shagga likes axes".
In the first book it´s even more schocking because Ned is arguably the protagonist there even more so than in the show and then Martin goes and merks him while ther eis at least a thrid of the book left and you wonder what in the actual hell is going to happen now.
I 100% thought Ned is the single main character of the show and is gonna live for most of the story when i first watched GOT. Boy was i wrong... Tbh this is probably when i got hooked completely. No plot armor, anyone could die, shit was exciting as hell
I had the misfortune of reading the second book first. (I had the 'flu and was desperate for something to read, and it was lying around the living room -- by the time I realized it was the second book in a series, I wanted something to distract me from being ill so much that I just didn't care anymore, although I usually avoid reading series out of order.) When I started the first book and realized that Ned was actually alive, I was weirdly shocked. I was like "Eddard Stark was actually _alive_ when this series started!?" I have no idea why this surprised me so much; I guess I just thought that all that stuff had happened before the actual story began. But I said it out loud, and then all of my friends laughed at me. It's...really not the ideal order in which to read the books. I'm still rather sad that I never got to experience the same shock that those who read the books (or watched the show) in the proper order did.
29:45 That's Yoren, a Night's Watch member. He's the same person that was travelling with Tyrion when Catelyn arrested him, and he rode to King's Landing to tell Ned about what happened. He also met Arya at that point and mistook her for a boy. When Ned says "Baelor" he's referring to the statue. He's drawing Yoren's attention to Arya without mentioning her directly, knowing that Yoren will recognize her and help her out.
a point of clarification he didnt mistake her for a boy hes telling her "youre a boy" so he can travel with her as a boy and not a little girl because you probably shouldnt travel as a little girl in westeros during war. mainly so he can say "aria? no this is 'arry a boy bound for the wall"
@@kvltslime2261 I'm referring to their first meeting. Yoren comes to Ned to tell him about Catelyn and says "this must be your son, he has your look." After Ned's execution, he says it intentionally, yes, but when they first met he mistook her.
Looking back it's obvious from this scene that Aemon knew way more than he let on even here about certain stuff not revealed until way later in the story
You're correct about the passage of time. Every time there is a change of scene, even if its in the same region, days, weeks or months may have actually gone by, it is up to you ro see the context to figure out how much (and most of the time it doesn't really matter tha much).
Fun fact: In the book, Tyrion actually fights in the battle, but the show couldn't afford the sequence in its first season, so they came up with the accidental knockout as a workaround.
And it isn't a complete sacrifice of 2000 Starks in the books. In fact, the majority of the Stark army (under the command of Roose Bolton) faces Tywin at the Green Fork but Robb takes all his cavalry to attack Jaime and relieve the siege of Riverrun. Bolton's force fights a brief but bloody battle but then retreats largely intact to fight another day. However, much the vanguard (primarily comprised of Starks, Cerwyns, Karstarks, Hornwoods and Manderlys) suffers heavy casualties. Robb actually ambushes Jaime, luring him and only 100 or so retainers into a trap. With Jaime's army now leaderless and divided in their siege camps, Robb defeats each section of the host piecemeal in a decisive victory. Genuinely, Robb is one of the best battlefield tacticians in the stories. They do show some of this in the show but these engagements are light on detail.
@@mjwoodroff8446 Tactics at that sort of small scale are _really_ difficult to portray in visual media. It's easier to convey large-scale strategy decisions, like they did here with the question of whether to march on Tywin's army or Jaime's, than it is to successfully portray small group tactics, which tend to just come across as chaotic on film. Books are a better medium for that. I agree that they did try to get it across, but I'm not sure how much of the books' portrayal of Robb's tactical brilliance they really could have managed in a TV show, even if they hadn't been limited by budget.
I loved Ned's character so much. What an interesting character. Dude has seen a lot and done a lot. And most respect him and many felt he could have ruled the 7 kingdoms.
@@the_crypter But how did it change television forever? I'm being genuine here. I haven't actually watched many shows, but from what I have watched, it didn't exactly set a precedent for other shows. Baelor is the statue. Its the Sept of Baelor, and Arya sits on the statue when Ned spots her. Thats why he shouts Baelor to Yoren from the Nights Watch.
Just watched a documentary about how they used charred bones to make paints and make up and some people still use this practice today. So they could in fact make a smokey eye in medieval times!

Arya has that hustle in her, she is killing pigeons for food and trying to trade them for tarts and failing. Now at least she is with someone who seem friendly.
Horses are basically the soul of the Dothraki.. So sacrificing Drogo's horse is pretty representative that this won't be good. And it's arguable that the magic did end up taking more than his horse from Dany... Just in a way she didn't expect
"In medieval times where do you get a smokey eye?" - makeup has been around for thousands of years and would be quite common among sex workers who could afford an edge in the business. You can create makeup from berries, soot, flowers, fish, and more I'm sure.
"I learned how to die a long time ago." the most meta line in the history of film that isn't trying to be meta. Sean Bean dies in almost 70% of his roles. I won't spoil other stuff, but, if you see Sean Bean, he's probably gonna die.
He's not Drogo's brother, he's his ***blooooooood rider***. A blood oath to protect him as long as he lives. It's like an even more hardcore version of the Kingsguard.
A time honoured tradition is continued as reactors forget who Yoren is. Astounds me every time, as Francis Magee made such an impact. Still, perhaps our hosts will remember next episode, so all isn't lost.
The scene where they take Dany into the tent where the ritual is going is even better in the books.. It's like a crazy cauldron of blood, violence, magic, death and life. I recommend to anyone to read it
The irony of this show is that some of the people who seems evil at first actually aren't that bad. There are a few who are simply irredeemable people for example Daenerys's brother and Joffrey, but there are many others who over time are rather likable they just have gigantic character flaws.
