He is one, if not the most, controversial political figure of PNG and yet remains a bold and decisive leader who was not afraid to chart the uncharted waters. No fear at all. Not afraid to stand by his decision, but even that, he still apologized. It takes a real leader to do that, and for that, we must give him our respect. The period of his reign in the 1990s remains stained in our memory. We have all lost many of our relatives in that civil war 💔😢Let history be the judge. Rest in peace, Sir Julius Chan and rest in peace those that were victims of the civil war😢💔

Let me set this record straight. Sir J didn't engage the Sandline International private military, the then Defence Minister and Brigadier General of the PNGDF Jerry Singirok did went into negotiations with them in U.K without Sir. Julius Chan knowledge. Only when they came back from their secret trip they disclosed what they had done. He is not the sole person responsible for the war down at Bougainville. The war started because Bougainvilleans were not happy with the decision of Pias Wingti who wanted the Papua New Guinea Government to own the Panguna Mine 100%. Also, some prior policies of the Somare Government on natural resources wasn’t benefiting the Bougainvilleans. Noken tru putim blem lo wanpla marn. It is a collective thing that led to the civil war. Ol Bougainvilleans upla mas readim Authobiography book blo Sir. Julius Chan Titled: Playing the Game na ba upla kisim true stori na able lo forgivim disla great leader. Peace to Sir. I concur. In any government, Ministers and bureaucrats do everything and submit to the head of government or the head of state to recommend and sing. Chan wasn't a military man...he was the head of government and as the chair of the security council , he will listen to the experts' advice and then make a decision.

In life you can be a hero to some but a villain to others. Sir J’s passing is a bittersweet moment for the nation but I pass my condolences to his family and province. 🇵🇬

Man you are a child and don't know how government operates. The head of government or the head of state doesn't do recommendations in terms of military or other matters. That's why we have Ministers and secretaries who are specialized in different areas. They collect information, put up policy and recommendations. The head of government approves and signs. In addition to that, the war didn't start during Chans term. He was trying his best to solve it but that relies on the advice of the military leadership. After all he found out that it was a controversy so he stepped asside which no bloody PNG leadership has done. Singirok and the security Council were to be blamed but singirok realise the consequences of their consultation and recommendation and tried to make Chan look like a villan to gain popularity and because his family was related Francis Ona. Now he's trying his movie in Hollywood or trying to contest elections, he will never succeed. Me Mangi Baining ya me gat relatives to lo Bougainville but I am cutting through the bullshit. Give the respect where it is due.

It’s a good thing no lives were lost during the Sandline Crises. A lot lives were lost during Namaliu’s regime which was the peak of the civil war. There’s a lot to look into the Bougainville war and the events that led to the Sandline crises and the people involved. I believe some of the military commanders and politicians were benefiting from the weapons manufacturers our military were getting weapons from.

Legacy is someone's impact whether good or bad towards particular people. Apparently its obvious commentator in this regard have misunderstood the terminology used. The display of Chan's legacy as herewith replayed is not in any way mean to give credit but to clearly show what his reign of ruler-ship was towards certain people like Bougainvilleans.

He should have retired from politics a very long time ago. He was very old and could not counter the pressure of politics. Like seriously, why doesn't he just enjoy his retirement but to hold on to power for that long shows how very greedy he is. Planti ol Niu Island mangi iagt save tu lo kamap politician, why na you tasol i laikim pawa. Considering the Bougainville Crisis and the Shandline Mercenaries, your legacy stinks.

Yeah, history with always remind us of how fucked up the legacy was and let the Nation of PNG admit that Julias Chan left an infinite stain in our conscience regarding the selfish profit hunger Sandline PMC to annihilate Bougainville. He was a leader of the nation and we'll respect him for that and will forgive him but will never ever forget the pain yield out of greed and crookedness.
Deepest sympathy and sincere apology to Bougainville.🙏

He did not engage the Sandline International private military, the then Defence Minister and PNG DF Brigadier general Jerry Singirok did and then consult and and ask for his consent. He his not the sole person responsible for the war down at Bougainville. Some of Pias Wingti and Michael Somare natural resource policy resulted in Bougainvilleans not agreeing to what they are getting out of their resource, thus, that's why the civil war started. Focus on logical facts not on accusations which has no hard proof

@@assahmalios4486 Prime Minister is the CEO of a Nation, whether Singirok came up with the idea of engaging PMC or some one else did behind the curtain, you can have a cabinet but the PM gives the final approval, thats common sense.
You want facts? well ask the Bougainvilleans who suffered the consequences when greed and crooked politics stain the fabric of the society and its sovereignty.

The story that was painted by Michael Somare who is power hungry and want to reclaim his Prime Minister sit is that Julius Chan is the one who is solely responsible for the war down at Bougainville. I believe the PNGDF Brigadier general then , Jerry Singirok conspire with Michael Somare to ousted Julius Chan. Thus, they create all this false accusations and narrative about Sir. J to ruin his reputation forever.

An history were many won't forget in the years to come.
Decision making of human lives was overwhelmed by the greed of money.
He sadly lived his life with alot of blood in his hands..

What sort of legacy did he leave for the country?
All he did was bring division among our own people and under his leadership many lives were lost, most lives lost were on Bougainvilleans. It's all due to greed and power hunger and what a shame for someone to come up and lable him as a good person and posting such stupid post.
Stop all these BS post claiming that he left a legacy while the matter of fact is that he left himself with a sad legacy.

That is your opinion, you being one of the leaders, you are worse than Sir J. The truth is that the contract drawn up was flawed. In that, the General thought the Mercenaries were going to be under his command.
That did not happen and it was under Command of the Commander in Chief, being the Prime Minister.
This put the danger of mass murder by the Mercenaries, which the Prime Minister was unaware.
This prompted the General to do what he did.
It was the misunderstanding of the command system, the Prime Minister, the Mercenaries Commander and the General- lifes were involved and at stake.
