you spend 4 hours nitpicking the fact that the story has side characters. Of course you can't flesh out the story of every goddamn character because the manga is called, Naru-fucking-to, not the story of the konoha leaf village.

i find it really interesting how you saw the Sasuke hospital scene, beacuse as i see it - that's Sasuke actin up- he is about to make a decision he is probably terrified of, and he acts in an exaggarated manner to both convince himself that's the right choice and to provoke and get a reaction, especially from Naruto. he is less emo, and more of a rebellious, frustrated kid. frustrated mostly in himself and his shortcomings.

I didn’t realize it at the time, but Naruto taught me a lot about mental health. It changed the way I viewed people. Everyone has their own pain that they carry and battle with every day. We all may be different and our circumstances unique, but we are all warriors inside.
Despite how young Naruto and his friends were, I saw myself reflected through them. They were only twelve years old and they were dealing with stuff much bigger than themselves. I was twelve when I got into the show and I was diagnosed with ADHD and anxiety. I could relate to Naruto’s loneliness and Sakura’s struggle being the wallflower and feeling worthwhile. (Totally underutilized her!) All of the characters grew on me in their own way. And every single one of them had issues far beyond a typical person, regardless of if they were an adult or a child.
And it was normal! Baggage was normal! But they didn’t let pain crush them, instead they deeply reflected on their past and what led them to where they are. Unique to most depictions of mental illness, pain and mistakes defined the good parts of them, not the bad. Emotions, no matter how raw and painful, were a road map that helped shape them. Emotions only fueled their inner fire. The more raw and authentic, the better!
The fights in Naruto are some of the most unique, action packed, and dramatic. Every single fight is about out-smarting your opponent! Using your wits!
For a story about underdogs, it fits perfectly with the show’s themes. It doesn’t matter how weak you are, or how much the odds are stacked against you. It doesn’t matter what the superpowers of the opponents are or how strong they are. It all depends on how you use your limited resources to your advantage.
And the stakes always feel so high because this isn’t a show about tournaments and winning for the honor of winning. No, this is life and death. This is survival.
These kids are thrown into a world they aren’t fully prepared for by the adults and have to learn very adults things in a short amount of time.
And the threat of death continues to feel so real because there are so many ways to die in the ninja world. Getting stabbed, getting crushed, getting poisoned, getting skewered, getting exploded, getting ripped apart, getting eaten alive by bugs, getting your face ripped off. Drowning, beheaded, suffocated, or going insane. Just to name a few.
All of these things can happen and the kids know it. There are even worse things than death in their world.
And Naruto does an amazing job of striking that balance of an adult ninja world these kids have to navigate, but the kids still act like kids. They are still dorky and silly and competitive at times. And as kids, they have their social groups and explore the dynamics of their relationships with each other. For example, they have silly and serious rivalries with each other, as well as friendships and people they are romantically interested in.
But when it comes down to a fight, these kids know the world is stacked against them.
Which I think is how every kid feels when they’re growing up. We’re all thrown into situations that we aren’t prepared for because we’ve never faced situations like it before. We’re experiencing them for the first time and the stakes feel like life and death.
These kids are navigating an adult world with the only tools they have. Their wits.

I had a completely different understanding of Naruto's chalk eraser in the door trick on Kakashi; I always thought that Kakashi knew it was there and let it hit him, lowering Team 7's guard as they now have a low opinion of their new teacher. This culminates in the bell test where we as the reader, along with Team 7, see Kakashi's true level of ability.
So cool to see different interpretations of the same text!

She represents what the show is supposed to be about. She isn’t special in any way, and worked her way up to keeping up with gods. Yet that growth was glossed over and she was just suddenly stronger when she needed to be.
Naruto and Sasuke are completely privileged as far as power goes. They have tons of things given to them by birth, and the show insults the intelligence of the viewer by pretending they worked for them. A version of the show where Sakura gets an equal piece of the pie is probably much better.

    • @notthefbi7015
      @notthefbi7015 9 місяців тому +11

@@BazzlieoMy guy they did work for it, Naruto's "gift" spent 90% of the series trying to take over his body and more often than not while it helped him win fights he also risked losing himself. It's like saying someone like Goku doesn't work hard because unlike Krillin he is an alien. I mean besides the fact that the only arc with the theme of talent vs hardwork is the Chunin Exams but even then the actual theme is even with talent you have to work hard because otherwise you stagnant. Sakura was never intended to be like Naruto and Sasuke that was the point, its just that Kishimoto bungled that character arc. Sakura didn't need to be a super powerful ninja to be a great ninja. She single handedly saves Naruto multiple times in part 2.

I was a huge fan of Naruto for the longest, I have obitos ring symbol tattooed on my finger and my son is named Tobi. For a while I had fallen of from Naruto being caught up in modern animes and this video has hit me and reminded me how much Naruto meant to me coming up. No show or manga has hit me as hard as Naruto did for a long time. Recently it was jojolion, something that taps that understanding of loneliness and failing to make those connections, iruka and narutos relationship makes me cry like a little girl, the building of Naruto and Hinata relationship does the same. And this show holds so many memories for me, I truly hope you make a second part to this. Naruto Shippuden has so much in it that kills me and I would love to hear another perspective on it. Thank you so much for the video though

Given how the story was written in its entirety, instead of audience’s understanding at the time of the writing, I do think it makes more sense for Kakashi to have sealed Sasuke’s cursemark. Kakashi was the strongest of the Jonin and had been trained by Minato, who was incredibly absolutely proficient at fuuinjutsu from his time with Kushina. It makes sense to me that Kakashi would have used his sharingan to copy/train in fuuinjutsu in the case that Kushina ever lost control in a post-Minato scenario. Just my 2 cents but I woulda loved to see Anko incorporated into Sasuke’s narrative as well 😭

It is interesting how the different instructions take down Negi. The proctor just jumps in front to stop Neji from progressing which is what a referee would do getting between fighters to break them up. Kurenai goes for the striking blow preventing him from hitting since Hinata is her student wants to stop it. Might Guy sort of does a stranglehold so if Neji does move probably going to be taken down probably showing off his strength and being the more brutal option probably because Might Guy is a wholesome guy that having his student do this would take it more personally. Kakashi just puts his hand on Neji arm seemingly being casual about it but we all know it wouldn't take much effort to snap Neji's hand almost as if going for the, try it and you will live to regret it.

That last moment between Zabuza and Haku points up something I seldom hear mentioned about the Naruto series; mainly that the deepest relationships exist between male characters. Naruto and Sasuke, Naruto and Gaara, Naruto and Iruka, Naruto and Jiraiya, Kakashi and Might Guy, Izumo and Kotetsu, and others. These are decidedly NOT sexual (there aren't even any such overtones and there are lots of denials), but they are deep and unshakable. Perhaps it's due to the fact that few, if any, shonen mangaka seem to have a handle on female character writing (witness the hair-pulling, name calling relationship between Sakura and Ino). I don't know. But the image of though guy Zabuza reaching over to gently touch Haku's face as he dies is heart rending.

1:04:40 THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR THIS!!! I'm so sick and tired of everyone saying that Naruto is supposed to be about hard work beating raw talent when the only arc that idea was ever even relevant in was the Chunin Exams. I get it, everyone loves that arc and specifically they love Lee and Gaaras fight not only that but this arc in particular was rerun so much on Toonami back in the day that many people just assumed that that's what Naruto was about, becoming a victim of our own childhood memories.
But no, Naruto in fact was about forming bonds with people and trying to understand them. The Land of Waves sets that theme in motion and is continued all the way through to the end. Ive even seen people say that Lee would have been a better main character than Naruto and these people just really frustrate me. Again if you like Lee that's fine I understand but liking someone more than the main character doesn't mean that the character is better, it just means they align more with your personal tastes.

As someone living in a country currently under attack by Russia, and who often finds solace in your videos during actual air raid alerts (we just marked our 1000th one in Kyiv alone), I have to denote how differently the citizens of aggressor countries rationalize war to themselves and others compared to the victims of a genocidal war of conquest. The perspectives are vastly different, and I don’t appreciate moral relativism or the false equivalence between the suffering of the attacker and the attacked, regardless of how I personally adore Naruto. And with my background in psychology, I’d also argue, that the absence of communication is secondary to the cultural predispositions that allow certain ideas and moods to manifest and flourish in some societies but not in others. Overall, I think people who discuss war from the safety of long-standing peace could generally benefit from approaching the subject with greater sensitivity and awareness of their own limitation in both knowledge and experience, considering wars are on the rise and differ significantly from one another. Broad generalizations can easily lead to incorrect conclusions and biases. Wars are not the same, even if they optically seem to be.
Anyway, loved 🫶 your video (and the jab at the Soviet Union.) Gave it a like and am looking forward to seeing one on Jujutsu Kaisen, should you ever decide to make one, since I haven’t read/seen that work and everyone’s talking about it. Honestly, I feel a lot of Sakura hate is born of the anime. The anime spent a lot of time making her look worse. Overemphasizing her negative traits for comedy, drawing her off model ect. A lot of western audiences saw Naruto primarily through the anime, which is why outside of Japan, Sakura hate is basically a meme level constant. Japan on the other hand has more people reading the manga weeky in JUMP, with the anime as a bonus. And in Japan, Sakura is more popular and well received. Due to circumstances growing up, i experienced Naruto almost exclusively through the manga and english scanlations of it, and as a result I didn't get the extreme Sakura hate for a while. Yes she is underdeveloped, but not worth this level of hate. Then I watched more of the anime and it clicked. She got done almost as dirty as Orihime in the original Bleach anime, and if memory serves same studio...
Anyone i look forward to seeing how your views on Sakura change, if it all, when looking primarily at the manga.

As being someone who rewatches Naruto every year especially part 1 this masterclass of an analysis and overview of a series I grew up with like so many and still hits me with so many amazing feelings and emotions to this day no matter how many times I rewatch or reread it. First off Iruka is a goat of a character such a champion role model then meeting Kakashi and how team 7 starts awesome plus 1,000 years of death one of the best moves in anime. The Land of Waves one of the best first arcs in any series I've ever seen with Zabuza and Haku really good first antagonists making me feel for them as I did for Team 7 throughout their fights especially Zabuza getting up one last time to take out Gatou after how he utterly disrespected Haku. The Chunin Exams my second favourite arc in pre ts with so many new dope characters and showdowns like the music in Naruto from the openings and osts is crazy good to me but first test being a written test instantly funny as hell how Naruto passed while everyone else showed off their skills, the second test being a super surreal survival test was dope getting to meet Orochimaru for the first time with his sound ninja to others getting shine here like Team 10, Rock Lee and then curse mark Sasuke going off the chain plus Gaara being demented af. The individual fights since so many passed were top tier for half of them of course Gaara vs Lee forever in our memories then Hinata vs Neji being a good setup for later, Naruto vs Kiba showing off his growth so much while a fart did help him get a W lul, Shikamaru vs sound chick getting a glimpse of his genius. The time in-between before final round with Jiraiya my personal goat of Naruto with Naruto training him just a tad was nice while Sasuke trained with Kakashi and everyone else training or being more of a demon like Gaara killing last sound guy who was kinda interesting actually lol but the matches once it starts here speak for themselves Shikamaru vs Temari classic, Naruto vs Neji a banger, Sasuke vs Gaara a cool clash showing off the chidori. Konoha crush was bonkers with so many fights happening at once Orochimaru vs Hiruzen RIP but did pretty damn well considering two former Hokage plus Orochimaru like holy shit, Sasuke vs Gaara until Naruto got there was dope, Shino vs Kankuro was nice to see, the other jonin destroying ninja always a treat to see, Naruto vs Gaara a massive great fight with a bunch of character development on both sides. Our Akatsuki dynamic duo Itachi and Kisame pulling up at the best possible time for them but still got put on hold while after Jiraiya with Naruto go to meet our gambling hero Tsunade and Orochimaru be scheming with Kabuto again and we get an awesome training arc with the Rasengan also Sasuke gets turned into a meme by Itachi but Jiraiya helps get them out of there then later that three way stand off with Sannin badass as hell especially how Tsunade busts up Orochimaru oh boy plus Naruto pulling off the Rasengan barely to handle Kabuto 👏 what a mad lad. To now the final arc my favourite Sasuke Retrieval this has my favourite fight in the whole series and so many defining moments for characters that'll be left to the wayside later but Choji, Neji and Shikamaru looking like they could die got to me man tearing up and shit 😢 so much badassery from them including Kiba for sure but Sound Ninja 4 were legit with Kimimaro who is insanely awesome for so little brief time but props to the boiz and Kidomaru the spider guy my favourite from the sound 4. Not to mention how Rock Lee comes back to fight off Kimimaro going drunk mode was hilarious and epic while the sand siblings coming back to help the guys out escaping death especially Gaara helping with Lee of all people lol but that finale of Naruto vs Sasuke at the final valley just does so many things right for me the build-up throughout the fight and the back and forth between them two is so damn great to the final climatic clash of jutsu were Sasuke stands over Naruto in the rain deciding to walk away towards Orochimaru instead of killing him was awesome and ended off the series at that point in such an amazing way to me. Thank you Axel for another wonderful video covering such a remarkable and exciting series.

You know the ironic thing is that Lee could not fight geniuses with hard work alone since they were also working hard, and becuase of that Guy taught him gate's that was basically sacrificing his health. But in the sasuke retrieval arc where he could not sacrifice his body anymore in order to compete with a talented opponent Lee was forced to find his own talent:something that even Guy could not use but Lee could without training it or sacrificing his body condition and that is a drunk fist!Maybe if he trained this style he could use it even without alcohol but yeah that's that..............Kishimoto might just forgot about him in Shipuden but i also think the reason he fall short despite putting so much effort in his training is becuase he failed to recognise his own talent.

Honestly I feel like Sakura knowing things in the written exam would have been so much more of a boost for her if Kishimoto emphasized the contents of the exam a little bit. If it had been complex theory of chakra natures or things like that, it would’ve been a great basis for Sakura being the one to give pointers when other people trained later in the series and preserve her “smart girl” character trait in a tractable way

At the end, even when shes proud of herself and knows how good she did and how strong she is, she's stull a young girl turning too a peer, probably wanting some affirmation that he thinks she's strong and he in turn is respectful to her for the rest of the series. It's an amazing moment I wish we had more of.

probably less so you miss the effect it had between oro and naruto, but that moment is meant to show that jiraiya is actually competitive with Oro..
at this point the only people that seem to be a possible threat for Oro are the naruto with the kurama amp or hiruzen possibly.
kakashi is shown to be on another level and if im not mistaken introduced as strongest leaf jonin/ninja. but he immediately thinks he will die if he faces Oro.
Then Jiraiya comes along and boom immediately undoes the seal placed on naruto by orochimaru. so not only is he renowned for being in the same tier as Oro, Kishimoto immediately shows you he is.
so ya ostensibly the seal is placed on naruto bec he might be a problem in the future, but its more meta narative to continue to put jiraiya and oro in the same tier.

    • @joacoguerrero98
      @joacoguerrero98 Рік тому

Also I see that the seal wasn't actually something useless to do, I see it as Orochimaru taking Naruto out of the ecuation when he was trying to put the curse mark on Sasuke at that specific moment, maybe if he didn't the fight could have been dragged enough until more people come and even if Orochimaru could possible take care of a 9 or so genin without much trouble it would have attracted a lot of attention. I don't remember exactly that arc, but I think Anko was searching for him in the forest at that moment, so it could have been a problem if she came before marking Sasuke.

The thing I and most others love about this setup is that you don't get to be Chunin just because you win your fights, it's not about winning it's about showing your capabilities and value as a ninja, hence why Shikamaru who didn't even win his fight with Temari still got to be Chunin. He proved himself in terms of ability and in strategic intelligence and that was seen as worthy of being Chunin and I'd have to agree.

Although I've never been through my family's deaths, I'm still dealing with my own trauma, and i get to choose when I think about it I'm (usually now due to therapy). He's gone from being a near normal teen back to the kid he was before we see him. Hes frustrated with his lack of power over everything in his kife, especially his brother and Naruto being more powerful than him. Power equals control for him. I could be projecting a bit, but seeing this again as an adult whos able to articulate these things noe that i couldn't as a kid, i get why hes not able to talk ti anyone about hiw hes feeling at this moment, and instead, lashes out. He acts out in the only way he knows how to handle stuff. I also never really connected the dots to him trying to spare Naruto here at the first valley of the end.

3:21:21 Mental state is an important factor in how well a ninja performs in battle. Sakura’s crying tears as she stands in front of them, so it’s safe to say that her mental state was not the same determined tenacity that Naruto had spurring him on. She was crippled in that moment and would have held them back at best, gotten herself killed at worst.
