My great grandfather loved Knute Rockne. He passed away when I was 4, and my only vivid memory of him was watching a Notre Dame football game together. From there, my Grandfather, father, and I have all been lifelong fans, and I am teaching my son to love the Irish as well. None of us attended Notre Dame, but I can assure you it means just as much to us as anyone who has. It is a special, special place. Go Irish!
I go into a Starbucks in Logan Square in Chicago where young Knute grew up and I like to ask the Barristas of the picture hanging in the back room and who it is. Not once did any of them new who he was. They don’t know and don’t care. Amazing!!
Watched Notre Dame football since I was eight years old or so with my dad when I was young. Found out later my dad just watched Notre Dame because they were on TV. Lol. Come to find out he was actually a Nebraska fan. Totally hilarious. I’ve been a fanatic since I was 10 years old, I’ve been to see them possibly 15 to 20 times Since the 80s, almost every Stanford game for 25 years when in Palo Alto. Was in South Bend for the game of the century in 1993 against Florida State, one of the greatest wins of all time.
Grew up hearing all the stories about Notre Dame in the ‘80s from my Dad and Grandpa. Screamed at the TV with my Dad from the time I could understand what was going on (sadly the CW years). I’ve talked shit and gotten let down by this team (2012 natty). I may have never sat in a classroom at that school but my love for Notre Dame will never go away. It’s my first love and my favorite love. Every time I get to step foot on campus I feel blessed to be grown into this. Screw Hoosier fans trying to demean our love for our team. Be loud and be proud of being a Notre Dame fan on Friday. We all deserve this
My dad was ND Class of '49 and my Wonder Years were spent in South Bend during the Era of Ara. I got school supplies riding my bike across town to Hammes. Not technically an ND alumnus, but I'm FAR more hardcore than my dad ever was. To me, ND is family, faith, and youth all rolled into one.
Goolsby, man you touched my heart when you told how you used to get sweaters at age 6 before you really knew what ND was. Thats how I became a life long fan. My grandfather , who was a ND grad in 1952, was a great nephew of Elmer Layden of the four horseman. He went on to have 3 daughters and only 1 son , who went to OU. So when I was born, he finally had a football game partner. He would bring me sweaters or banners from his trips back to ND, and for the longest time I believed Notre Dame was a different state or something. Ive rooted for this team since 1990 with a heavy heart and I love what they are doing lately.
I was born in Fort Wayne, being a catholic growing up in Georgia made it easy to root for a historical program with the right morals that I identify with. I value showing grit and doing the right in all aspects of life. Now I’m permanently in this being a graduate student this year, nd for life.
I was raised in Omaha, Nebraska in an Irish Catholic family. It was interesting. Most of the family were huge Husker fans, .. but also Notre Dame fans. And most of them just didn't want Nebraska and ND to ever have to play each other. My dad was more of a Notre Dame fan than a Husker fan, and that trickled down to me. It ultimately ended up with me attending ND, and ever since then (1980s), I've been just 100% ND all the way. I actually arrived at ND the same year as Lou Holtz, and I ran onto the field at the end of the Miami game in '88. Will never forget it. The rest of my life, it's ND ... and basically nothing else I care about in sports. Really hoping for a win this week. I think it would be a huge step forward for the program. Super excited.
My dad , born in 1915, was a fan going back to Knute Rockne. I have been a fan since 1973 O.B. beatdown against Nebraska. My brothers , sisters to a lesser degree, ND fans. My sons are ND fans. Passed on and on, generation to generation.
I agree, my family from my grandparents are all Notre Dame fans. Myself and my kids born and raised in Los Angeles, imagine all the disrespect for years. USC, UCLA........ Definitely born in to being a Notre Dame fan
Our fandom, it’s family. Irish Catholics, dad from an Irish city neighborhood. Cousins on mom’s side, Irish and big into ND as well. Subway alumni from NJ.
My father grew up down the street from the Stadium. Later, as a mason, he renovated some of the buildings on campus. He used to attend the Gridiron Banquet and bring back autographs for my brother and me.I was born in South Bend, returned to SB to attend ND, and earned my undergraduate degree from there. Watching the Irish, through thick and thin, was something my dad and I did together for nearly 50 years. It. Matters. To. Me.
As someone who went to ND (and then IU for grad school) it pisses me off seeing all the IU fans talking sxit about our subway alumni… sorry Our Lady’s University is such a great place that it’s engrained in American Catholic culture and popular amongst people all over the world. Notre Dame does not discriminate against its fans. The team better win this in honor of all the subway alums!
Bless you, brother, and I say cheers to all of you alums that put in the blood sweat and tears to get a degree from Notre Dame. A great accomplishment!
I inherited my fandom from my dad. He grew up in San Antonio in the 50s and 60s, watching the Lindsey Nelson- hosted Sunday highlights. Like many other Catholic school kids of Mexican decent, Notre Dame was his dream school.
My dad brought me up on Notre Dame. I think I first started watching them in 1963 or 1964 with my dad. Today, I always pull out a Notre Dame shirt that my dad wore to a frazzle and drape it over the couch to my right every game and still watch with my dad!
My father went to Notre Dame for grad school on the GI bill after WWII. Frank Leahy's teams played on Thursday night 1st string v. 2nd string for the chance to start on Saturday. The best games in the country were played on Thursdays.
Just like Goolsby, it was an Irish immigrant thing to start, but then my father went to Notre Dame as an undergrad. He actually has his name on one of the seats in the basketball arena. It’s all I’ve ever known.
Anyone else going to the game? I’m going to be there for three days so looking forward to the visit this year. I hope Cignetti gets put in his place. Go Irish!!
10:00pm central and I am just watching! ND 38 - IU 24 so Singer is right about two touchdowns. Goolsby with his jacket and sunglasses is cool 😎. Two of my sisters went to St Mary’s and married Domers. 7 nieces and nephews and a great nephew are Domers. My aunt was a CSC as was my wife’s aunt. My father in law got ND their own PO. My high school classmate played basketball there. I have three cousins who graduated from ND. I grew up in Cedar Rapids…Catholic schools all the way. In ‘59 or’60 ND played at Iowa City against the Hawkeyes. Late Friday the Irish showed up at our HS for practice. They looked so BIG! My aunt and uncle took me to the game, my first time to see a college game. Iowa was favored but the Irish triumphed with a last second field goal! This is just a little of my love affair with Notre Dame…You asked😃☘️☘️💚 I don’t remember when our whole family was not a fan. Now we live in Texas and at 81 we just watch them on TV. We saw ND many times in South Bend, once in San Antonio, once in Austin and once in Dallas! Our kids are big fans and our two grandsons!! GO IRISH!
I'm i a lifelong Ohioan. I think my early fandom is due to ND games being on national TV every week, be it NBC or another network. My entire life, ND has had every game on national television.
My grandfather was a season ticket holder from the early 70's to the early 2000s . I miss how, for the blue and gold games you'd get there early enough players would sign the blue and gold programs you used to purchase. What happened to that? I was hoping my son would be able to get some players autographs, now they don't even let you in the stadium early. Booo to that
I think if you get a stud DT and WR in the portal the team will be better next season. Watts will be the biggest loss. Only a few names could enter the portal that would be enticing. Full confidence in Minchey
Personally as an old alum, I akways liked the fact that ND did not put names on the jerseys - team not individuals. But Blue & Gold is ND - ok green jersey once a season, but get rid of those white pants!!
Have to say I disagree with you about the Leonard talk. The recivers might not look bad if Leonard wouldn't under throw them or throw behind them. He has been terrible all season and nothing but frustrating.
Not sure what forecast ppl are reading but I don’t really see weather having anything to do with outcome of game or bein a factor … I live here and am an Usher … they calling for less than inch of snow Friday morning .. and 29 degrees and clear sky’s Friday night with a 10 mph nw wind … which we have almost every day here living so close to lake mi . Notre dame 31 Indiana 17
@ I’m gonna do the opposite and ask them to stand up and be as rowdy as f and out of control as humanly possible …. bring the noise… !!!! new usher protocols call to get on ur feet and yell or u will be kindly asked to leave Notre dame stadium lol

The Patreon with John Kennedy is worth it

I always look forward to Goolsy’s take on this team. He always has a cool demeanor and excellent insight.

Became a fan in 1988 when I was 7. My son (12) is now a die hard ND fan.
I agree, my family from my grandparents are all Notre Dame fans. Myself and my kids born and raised in Los Angeles, imagine all the disrespect for years. USC, UCLA........ Definitely born in to being a Notre Dame fan

Just got done watching the 91 ND-IU game. Watched it Quantico, VA first time in 91. Man, forgotten how much the game has changed.
Thanks guys! I still have to work on Friday, going to be long day for me!
Goolsby is spot on about IU fans.
Goolsby looked CLEAN today haha

Thank you! Blue and Gold ! Stop with all of the colors. We don't want to be Oregon.
I was born a Notre Dame fan just a few miles from Notre Dame. Now my children and grandchildren are fans. My favorite coach - Ara P
I inherited my fandom from my dad. He grew up in San Antonio in the 50s and 60s, watching the Lindsey Nelson- hosted Sunday highlights. Like many other Catholic school kids of Mexican decent, Notre Dame was his dream school.
Goolsby is a cool cat! Go Irish!

take revenge on IU for NIU
ND lineage Singer.....Father was an all American on the 77' championship team. Cornhusker Degree but ND runs through the blood. Born and raised Irish.
"new jerseys" yes, gold last names
Just like Goolsby, it was an Irish immigrant thing to start, but then my father went to Notre Dame as an undergrad. He actually has his name on one of the seats in the basketball arena. It’s all I’ve ever known.

Looks like Mike Ditkasby!
I live 15 mins from ND and my whole family is ND fans.
Been a fan since I was 4 years old watching Tony Rice play I've not missed a game since.
Generational like he said…everyone in my town was an ND fan in New York.
i’m a huge kenny minchey fan. he has my vote. they pushed too hard to get him late in the cycle to waste that talent
10/10 rant from Goolsby on the generational element of ND fan hood. There’s a lot of meat on that bone & it’s just lazy from IU fans
I married into an ND family. My wife father attended ND when Rocknee was coach. My brother inlaw has the funeral card from his funeral Mass.
Go ☘️!!

My Dad who was from Pennsylvania (not alum) passed it to me and I have passed it to my sons!!!
Gold pants are back! Lets fucking go!! Violence
I'm i a lifelong Ohioan. I think my early fandom is due to ND games being on national TV every week, be it NBC or another network.
My entire life, ND has had every game on national television.
Subway Alumni are famous.
My dad and uncle were huge ND fans we lived and died with ND every week. The losers who think someone has to be a graduate to be a fan are delusional
My fandom came a little from my family but also the catholic background.
The new Mike Ditka
Goolsby, lookin like The Fonz, "Aaaaaaaayyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy....." 👍😎
Definately, NOT thinking about our short comings, not “puckered up” as Goolsby says!
I need that Jacket! 😎
Mike Goolsby I'd like you to autograph the Blue & Gold mag with you on the cover please tell me where to mail it.
Golden Domer
what's with the players names on the jerseys?
What do you mean? ND has usually done that for bowl games.
😂😂. Goolsby going full Hollywood on us☘️☘️
My grandfather was a season ticket holder from the early 70's to the early 2000s . Val Kilmer is looking great again!
Run baby RUN! especially if it's windy and cold! passing will suck, unless coaches decide passing game (dumb).
Comment for traction
I think if you get a stud DT and WR in the portal the team will be better next season. Watts will be the biggest loss. Only a few names could enter the portal that would be enticing. Full confidence in Minchey
Grandpa and uncles were nd alum. I was an nd fan at birth. Nd football player every year for halloween as a kid.
Personally as an old alum, I akways liked the fact that ND did not put names on the jerseys - team not individuals. But Blue & Gold is ND - ok green jersey once a season, but get rid of those white pants!!
Goolsby scheduling a vacation during playoff time????
Fran Tarkentonton
Have to say I disagree with you about the Leonard talk. The recivers might not look bad if Leonard wouldn't under throw them or throw behind them. He has been terrible all season and nothing but frustrating.
I could careless about jersey color...let's just focus on winning not appearance
Mikey goolsbiani
I only know back to my grandfather, then my father were diehard Notre Dame. Was wearing full ND uniforms at 4 years old.
Are you going to ask people to sit down this game?
@ I’m gonna do the opposite and ask them to stand up and be as rowdy as f and out of control as humanly possible …. bring the noise… !!!! new usher protocols call to get on ur feet and yell or u will be kindly asked to leave Notre dame stadium lol
The clock is striking twelve for Cindiana!!!
Much ado about nothing. Not much to do about nothing.
