The very first overdrive/distortion machine that actually inspires me rather than triggering migraine. :-) Seriously, it behaves in a way like the minimoog: you are always touching the sweet spot, no matter how boldly you're trying to create mayhem.
thank you for the excellent demo! I'm really liking this pedal. I like the idea of having an expression pedal controlling the amount of gain. That coupled with the volume knob on my guitar with truly give me a wide array of gain stages! and I enjoyed your playing very much.
you prolly dont give a damn but does anyone know a trick to get back into an instagram account..? I was dumb forgot my password. I appreciate any tricks you can offer me
@Jaziel Paxton I really appreciate your reply. I found the site through google and im trying it out atm. I see it takes a while so I will get back to you later with my results.
Hats of to Strymon, they really have been knocking it out of the park with all their products. Everything I tried from them has been very musical and instant, their DSP sounds great and it takes out the technical overthinking that can sometimes slow down the creative process.
Such an awesome pedal! So many tonal options you can get out of this. I like the favorite switch on how you can either have it as a booster or a completely different drive pedal (like a high gain or a low).
Love your reviews Bill, I find they are fantastic for giving you everything you need to know and hear.Ps your costing me a lot of money, but I'm having more fun playing now than I have in a long time.
Only you can answer that. The Sunset has distortion pedal types of tones, while the Riverside is more of a distorted amp tone. Given that, I think the Riverside does low gain distortion better than the Sunset, and I find myself using it more.
@@chordsoforion I have a lot of other stuff that i would need like an ebow or a good baritone a bass preamp, etc. on the other hand i want that riverside so bad just cause i am such a big strymon fan. it is like i am a collector and i am crazy about it.
Is there a little less-expensive unit which can control tone and hash a bit? And, does this go before or after the compressor to use it's dynamic sensitivity?
There are many, many distortion pedals that are less expensive that do the overdriven amp thing. Just a matter of finding one that you like. Also, I generally prefer to put my compressor before the distortion to smooth out the overdrive. In addition, it allows me to run a little less gain for that smoother tone. But, if dynamics is what you are looking for, then no compressor is probably the way to go.
Great demo as always... dang... it's so amp like and realistic... but I forgot I don't really like amp distortion that much lol... I prefer the pedal tone... and this is all amp... a little too harsh and ice picky for me... I mean, I'm still playing around with mine... but I was really hoping for something smooth ala tube driver or even the mxr fet driver... if you have any setting suggestions for something smooth like that I would appreciate it... but so far, I would definitely not replace any of my pedals for this one :p ... and I would only play it with my Les Paul... it is a little TOO touch sensitive with my strat
Have you played around with the presence control? I switched mine to the minus setting and have gotten good results. But to your point, it is more amp-like, less distortion pedal for sure.
I pre-ordered the GOO (designed by Nels Cline) from Toneconcepts in July (!) They said it would be shipping in October. The year is coming to an end, and they are still painting the chasis of the first units (facebook.com/toneconcepts/). May be I should have just got the Riverside... :-
I have a Route 66 drive because I like the range in the drive, but I usually run most of my drive from my amp, and then I have my drive knob around 8-9 o'clock and my level around 11o'clock. I feel like this pedal wouldn't have the same effect. But I reallly like the sound, So I'm torn between buying it or not. :'(
how are you affording these Strymon pedals? they're so expensive. May I make one suggestion for your videos. Invest in some film lights, if you have some invest in a few more. brighten your videos up. Audio is great.
From one Bill to another, I've got to be honest I wasn't that impressed with this pedal at all. Whether it's this demo or any of the others I've watched. Trust me it's the pedal not the player, your playing is amazing Bill!
Thanks for the kind words on the playing! And I get where you are coming from in terms of the pedal. The great thing is that there are so many options out there to choose from. Just out of curiosity - do you have a favorite distortion/overdrive pedal?
A lot of songs have an ambient track layered in the background to give it an added punch and fill in space. Then there are some artists who strictly do slower ambient types of songs. You should listen to Tycho, Bonobo, and Zero 7, because not all ambient artists are "lazy." And it doesn't cost a lot of money to be an ambient player. If you have a great reverb pedal that's got versatile settings (ie. spring, echo, etc) and a delay pedal, you don't need much else. Unless you just WANT an expression pedal. Don't knock ambient down. You can combine it with a lot of different genre's and styles of playing.
@@DelScully ambient is sooo versatile. from long drones to frips to hallish pickings and highly distorted solos. then combined with huge toms and lush snares to even some tighter parts, right? adding some synths, some hammond and especially fantastic some deep brass drones with some high trumpets. man ambient is sooooo creative.

Thanks so much John!

Yep - that sounds like a great way to take advantage of an expression pedal!

@Jaziel Paxton It did the trick and I now got access to my account again. Im so happy!
Thank you so much, you really help me out :D
Great ! I saw a short demo of this in your other video but this one really shows off the touch sensitivity and goes in depth.
The more I use the Riverside, the more I love it. It really does sing!

Totally agree and - I have been using the favorite switch a LOT.
Thanks Bill .. great demo. I'm a big Strymon pedal fan so I'll check out the Riverside.
Definitely worth checking it out. I really am liking it more and more each time I play it.

Kudos for your rich knowledge of vintage French 6v6gt-r2d2-c3po-k2so-bb8 tubes.
:-) I really do still have a footlocker full of tubes, including the vaunted Visseaux and Mazda brands!!
I love your videos man. Great lessons and demos!
Thanks for letting me know you are liking the videos. I appreciate the feedback!
"It is a strange fate that we should have so much admiration over a so small thing. Such a little thing." Really cool Bill ! :)
OK Boromir, keep you hands to yourself! :-) Thanks!!!!
Great review.
Sounds beautiful,thinking about getting one.
Definitely worth trying!!
Nice demo Bill.
PROPER REVIEW,....so many great tones, lake a room of amps
Thanks!
Riverside or Sunset for Jazz Guitar? What pedals in general for Jazz Guitar? Essential vs non essential?
For jazz - I would go with the Riverside.
@@chordsoforion Ok..nice!
I was thinking to get the Boss TU3 Tuner...Compadre...Big Sky...Timeline...Riverside as my pedal board for jazz. Am I missing something?
Riverside or Sunset, which one would you recommend for classic rock or blues?
Awesome pedal. I own one.
Excellent, as always. Can I ask what delay pedal you are kicking in?
Great review Bill. Did I here you almost slip into a bit of Tubular Bells at one point? Great sound pedal. Really flexible.
Not knowingly, but it would not surprise me. Love Mr. Oldfield's music!
Bill, do you ever plan to review anything by Walrus Audio? I'd recommend the Descent.
I will check into it. I could see myself giving the Descent a try for sure.
Bill you had both sunset and RS! Is it worth getting RS if i allready have sunset?

Sorry but i cant stay if you start talking, start by playin, please were not all english speakers.talkers i dont know.4 mns before playin!!! pfff!
its called having patience man. Or skip forward to the sound?
Ambient guitar is lazy to me. Gets old. Johnny Marr built a bigger wall of sound without a $1500 pedalboard
Christian Castellanos You don't need to spend a lot to do ambient though.
