My favorite scene from The Parent Trap is any scene with Maureen O'Hara in it. She was a truly gifted actress, and the writing and directing in this film brought out her absolute best.

It’s based on ballads from the 40’s, but was made specially for the film by the Sherman Brothers. Word was Walt felt the music didn’t seem right, but they explained that when the Mom and Dad would have been courting, it most likely would have been during the mid-40’s, and that is what the tone of ballads were like during that time. So, Walt said, “that’ll do.”
One of the "confusing"scenes in the movie,"confusing,"because here, Hayley plays "Susan posing as Sharon,"and meanwhile, out West in CA, just the reverse-"Sharon posing as Susan,"ultimately,so as to reunite their parents(and they did!). I understand Maureen O'Hara passed on this past fall, at the ripe old age of 94,or so(at any rate, she definitely was in her nineties-definitely lived to a ripe old age!)May she RIP. Excellent touching Disney film, this is.
This scene always cracks me up because of the fake background and the actresses pretending to walk. Kudos for using a real film of Boston’s Public Garden as the background, though.
I suspect it was done for effect. The process shots really pull the viewer's eye to the actors and away from the background. In fact, the background in this case is slightly out of focus--deliberately, no doubt--to make it more ethereal. It romanticizes the scene in a way.
Why they use green screen for the close up shots? It's difficult to film people up close back then? Obviously they were shooting at actual park because of the last scene.

Even as a 7 year old, I didn't like the obvious process shots as the backgrounds in this scene. It looked too fake.
I kinda figured they did that on purpose to make the more real shots of the twins together seem even more convincing.
