Shadow Gameboy Very true. However if your partner plays a character that can stock tank well, it's more beneficial for you to have less stocks in the first place.
Ortzac to add on to shadows point. what if its a jigglypuff constantly going under the stage out of reach in smashville. in that situation you would be forced to try and take the lucario out
Has no one mentioned the Lucario + Ness/Lucas absorb strategy? Lucario prevents his Earthbound buddy from losing stocks by tossing an aura sphere at him whenever he can. Only downside is if the other team has a Rosa or another way to gimp Ness or Lucas.
Derrick Tang He didn't mention it but you can see Taiheita and Gomanugitya playing Lucario and Lucas in the beginning of the video. I think they do it in Smash 4 as well if I remember correctly.
Hey cFive, there's one thing I'd like to point out that this video doesn't mention, and that's what happens when Lucario takes a stock from his partner: "The Anubis Strategy" While it's correct that the game calculates Aura based on how many stocks his opponents and his partner have, the game still doesn't see it as "Lucario has one stock and his partner has three; therefore Lucario gets Aura very early." Rather, the game sees it as "Lucario has died twice and his partner hasn't died at all." Because of that, when Lucario loses all three of his stocks, the game then reasons that "Lucario has died three times and his partner hasn't died." If Lucario were to then take his partner's stock, the game applies the same reasoning at all times: Lucario has died three times and his partner hasn't died once. Because of this, Lucario's Aura "ceiling" would still remain low, even if his partner dies and the stock count is Lucario's one to his partner's one. If Lucario takes BOTH his partner's stocks, Lucario's Aura ceiling will remain at 50% for the rest of the match. That's why the Anubis Strategy is as devastating as it is, especially if Lucario is teamed with Ness or Lucas to take advantage of his early Aura. Using this strategy also means that Lucario will generally be the better character to have in a 2v1 or a 1v1 at the end of the doubles match. This strategy also works in reverse: if Lucario's partner takes Lucario's stock, but Lucario hasn't lost a single one yet, Lucario's Aura ceiling is now *extremely* high, and now his attacks hit like a soft summer breeze.
It would be a really cool anime moment if the opposing Lucario self destructs at the start of the match and then you and your team mate self destruct to cancel out his aura Boost. That could be crazy enough to confuse and fluster the enemy team.
I know I'm mega late, but it wouldn't actually work, being as it isn't based on your opponent's stocks only, so you'd have to both suicide and take out the lucario's teammate to remove the aura boost
sorry for my bad england(intentional joke)...I'm french I wasn't knowing this at all and I just discovered it It's cool I think because Lucario is getting lots of power of it and his teammate have to escape. This situation is a 50 - 50 because the teammate can be very weak against this situation if the other team adapt and react correctly bref I learnt something Nice video btw
+Alfa Doge top 20 is a pretty high ranking. Any character above rank 40 is viable honestly, so being in the upper half of that is pretty good. Although he isn't top 10 good. If i had to place lucario, id say hes around 15th or so.
It's a cool strategy, this is a high-risk high-reward strategy and, if you get it to work right, it gets results From a viewer's standpoint, this is one of the coolest things to see in a tournament. Here you have someone doing something completely insane, being an underdog, playing all his cards and coming on top. It's like all 80s action movies thrown into one and it's so cool N.b. my biases are: I love Lucario as a character, I love high-risk high-reward strategies, I love 80s action movies (the cheesier, the better) and I love glass cannon tactics, so this strategy is beautiful to watch (if done correctly)
Smash Lucario *IS* a boy, girl Lucarios have stunted chest spikes while the males retain a sharp point. (Also this tech is really fuckin' cool, high-risk high reward.)
this rarely works in practice. i have seen this get blown up so often in doubles. its worth just fighting it out and let the stock get lost naturally, with the partner running away
Twisted Hero It does depend how good or how confident you are. Lucario mains typically learn how to survive at high percents with stronger attacks. Having that high an attack boost with at least double, maybe even triple the survival rate? I mean, I see why players at least attempt this.
Wouldn't the best strategy be to not take off a stock until your at like 120 percent or so? Basically a comprimise between the jank strategy and the normal one...
Alienrun Well it's not so much about getting power it's about having the power quicker. The BEST case scenario is if lucario gets like a n-air into footstool up-b downwards stage spike or something because lucario benefits in this situation whilst the opponent doesn't
IT IS SOOO COOOL WOW! I love playing as Lucario, even though he isn’t my main (Falco), and I didn’t really know this exact information, so thank you so much!
Doubles is all about using character dynamics to make interesting tactics. This one is cool because it works with any character that can play defensively, but I don't think it's obnoxious or lame. Also, I had no idea about the stock multiplier for aura, so this video cleared up a lot of confusion. Pretty cool overall!
Interesting, so now I have an idea. You guys should make a video about how many stocks it would take lucario to be behind in a 1 on 1 99stock match. I'm curious to see how many it would take for him to be at max aura at 0% lol
Well, the most you can have in a game is 8, so if the math is right: 2 player game - 130% max Aura 4 player game - 50% (divide 130 by 2.6) 6 player game - 19.23% (50/2.6) 8 player game - 7.34% (16.76/2.6) So, like, in a 4v4-If that still existed at tournaments-Lucario could SD twice and be 2 stocks behind and have it depend on a teammate holding all 3 of their stocks still. I just continued the ratio from a 2 player game to a 4 player game to the 6 and 8 player games. I don't know if the growth is a linear or some exponential rate.
Here is how Pokémon genders work in smashLucario is likely based on the lucario from the movie, so lucario is male. Pikachu is clearly based on Ash's pikachu and Red's pikachu. Both are male. Puff is based on the one from the anime, so it's a female. Charizard is again based on Ash's and Red's and Lance did have a charizard in gsc. All are male. Greninja was put into the game before xy came out. But greninja has a 7/8 chance to be male. And Ash had a male greninja. Mewtwo is the only Pokémon in smash without a gender. Mewtwo has always been genderless. "But its voiced by a dude" but Ash was voiced by a girl. Mewtwo will forever be genderless (unless you dig deep into the anime lore or NPC dialogue)
I started to notice this behaviour while smashing with some friends back then when the game was released. The fam started yelling "wow your Lucario's aura got bugged again, so broken" and I was like sure whatever, must be some kind of hidden ability so let's start exploiting it. I always managed to pull off some sick comebacks thanks to this mechanic. So this video really solves the mistery for me. Thx BSD :D
Fun little thing i do in freeforall is give everyone a stock and selfdestruct. Then the real battle begins xD granted i dont always win but i get close most of the time.
The fact that this formula exsists and that we were able to decipher how exactly the aura works is amazing in my opinion!!!!! I just wanna say, big props to the Developers who came up with such an awesome design for a smash character that's so close to what Lucario is like in the Pokemon world.
I'm a lucario main. Before I say this video, noticed lucario's aura getting huge when I was later in the game. I thought it was a bug until I saw this video. Thank you. Now I know how to beat my friends in team and free for all.
It's more of a risk reward sorta thing, and considering lucario's normal play style, I think it only helps accent it. The SD at the beginning is a sign that you're going all in, in exchange for the boost in aura. I was never aware of the stock difference effect until just now, but It's very unique
Could you link Kurogane's channel in the description for convenience maybe? And do the same with channels you reference in the future? I know it might be more trouble than it's worth, so just wondering ^^
I think it's cool. It doesn't seem overpowered, and in fact, it mixes things up in doubles, which makes it more interesting. Doubles were already complex before, but now, we have a new Defensive meta.
tbh I hate lucario as a smash character. I love the pokemon, but as a design in smash, I think its terrible. I'm not against comeback mechanics like rage or xfactor in mvc3, but it has to be done right. Rage, while not perfect, is a decent enough mechanic, but aura is really stupid imo. Rage is a mechanic that grants comebacks, but aura is a mechanic that rewards bad play; it rewards you losing for half the set/match. I also feel its not right to be scared of dying when I'm at something like 30-40%. That being said, while I personally hate lucario's aura and think its a lame mechanic, doing something like this is at least interesting. It adds a lot to the doubles of the game, and its still lame imo, but its more interesting.
girugamish _ they could keep aura but change it to be like project M's aura so that you don't have a lame mechanic rewarding getting destroyed but still have aura
Seth Osman I really like the PM mechanics of comboing to build up a "meter". It really makes it rewarding to play as him, and also only gives you 1 move. You can only build the meter for 1 or specials, but lucario in smash 4 just has constant aura. The PM mechanics for aura is really cool and makes him so much more fun to play. Whereas in smash 4, I don't play him, but when I do, I feel like I need to start losing to start doing well. And that's just.. not fun to me
It is not a bad play if they can't kill you at high percents, it's your fault for not being able to kill him, and you should *always* be scared of losing a stock against everyone, since gimps, stage spikes and bad di are everywhere. >obligatory "git gud"
I love how everyone complains about how early they can die to aura. Did everyone forget that Lucario is pathetic until he reaches 70%? That all his early kill moves have crazy long start up? That he isn't even a character until he reaches ~70%? Aura isn't rewarding the players bad play, it punishes the opponents bad play. You can't kill a Lucario before he reaches or is at 190%? You deserve to lose.
This was really interesting! But a few questions: does this work in regular time matches? Like no stock limit matches? Would Lucario gain additional aura if his team is losing in a match like that? ( kind of like for glory doubles )
I think it's pretty neat. A little extra metagame aspect that increases the complexity of the doubles strategy. I don't like rage/aura mechanics, but since they are already in the game, might as well min-max them.
Thats very cool i never knew lucario was this powerful. I wonder if Tsu knows about this. Also i might use him alot more when i get a 3ds or a wii U and play him in tournaments and do training to test that power. thank you Beefy Smash Doods ur the best.
I gotta admit. A strategy such as this is really thought out. If they're confident in their Lucario and suicide, that's definitely not to be taken lightly.
In theory, this strategy sounds insanely effective alongside a healing partner like Lucas or Ness. They're able to tank stocks with constant healing from the Lucario while the Lucario goes complete and utter super saiyan.
This strategy is very interesting, you sacrifice a life to increase your own power, it's basically a gamble where you can leave the match a lot sooner if your opponents can adapt and kill you but it can also help you kill opponents sooner if they're unable to take you or your opponent out soon. Could see this combo working very well in a lot of unique combinations, such as reflector type characters such as Mario, Fox, Falco, Ness, or Mewtwo, where a scores the screen aura sphere with lots of aura can go across the screen and if dodged a reflector could add chaos causing a reaction into a punish or with a unexpected aura sphere kill. Also with characters who heal off projectiles like Ness and Lucas which can help your team mate survive longer, in this case Lucas would be better since when he holds magnet it also has its hit box which can sometimes hit, plus his recovery is a lot better than Ness's, but Ness has a lot more killing power along with being able to restore percentage with his magnet without having to face a certain way and also having his bat to reflect Aura Sphere. There's also Game&Watch who can use his bucket for a full Aura Sphere Oil Spill. So yeah this aura build up dependent on doubles stock really can add a lot more to an already massive match up combination
Also forgot to mention that Zelda's neutral B also reflects, and Rosa can use down B and have the sphere go all around her with its active hit box but that's even more gimmicky than what I mentioned before, Rosa is more of a counter to the ideas I had.
As a Lucario main, this is very interesting to know. I always thought that the aura boost was a flat bonus just based on how much damage was acquired. As far as going to say that losing a stock in doubles is a good strat, idk. Just depends on who's behind the controller
As a biased Lucario main, I say it's cool. As an unbiased Smash player, I also say it's cool (maybe a bit scary) since you're playing a game of risk and reward where risk may or may not be as high as the reward, depending on team synergy and the opponents ability to play around Lucario.
Yeah but do they stack together? like you know how rage and aura increase damage? do they stack up and Lucario has "double rage" or does Lucario not experience rage
It's a risky gamble but it's a Hella fun one! I don't main lucario as much but it is a totally different kind of game when you got one in the game that can play
Hey Beefy Smash Doods. How strong would Lucario be in 8 player smash with only one stock it's self and everyone else with 3? And what is the effect if Lucario has 1 stock and the other 7 players have 99 stocks?
This strat is awesome! It takes Lucario's gimmick and cranks it up to 13, it's a massive risk for both sides, Lucario's team is a stock behind but their opponents can die so easily if Lucario gets one good hit in, sometimes regardless of percent

Yes, we did assume its gender!
On that topic, I assume Jigglypuff is a male!
Beefy Smash Doods I'm glad I found someone else who doesn't like to refer to Pokemon as "it". It just feels wrong.

Yeah, that's honest.

Suddenly, Cloud seems a lot less terrifying in doubles.
Dreadfury no cloud is still the best character in doubles
but if you have cloud with lucario, what is the result?
Not as good as the results of double cloud
Xantis Cloud can be gimped pretty early, which would suck for their partner Lucario
Why is ir that cloud is such a good character for doubles? Aside that he is good anyway
Mr R. wins the match with Lucario BEFORE giving up a stock.
TheDedBox PLEASE DON'T START THIS AGAIN
I DON'T EVEN LIKE CEREAL WITH MILK
Mr. R plugs his controller in BEFORE he unwraps it.
TheBostonAdam Woah dude. Chill. Just chill. Don't be throwing around wild stuff like that. There are children on the internet you know.
Mr. R loses the match before losing his first stock.
this strategy is very high risk, very high reward so I think it is fine
I feel like, in doubles, it is more moderate risk, high reward instead of very high on both ends.
Ortzac I can see that but not only are you taking a stock of yours, you're getting rid of a possible share stock from your partner

All this time I never knew that stock also affected Lucario's aura

what if it's 8 player smash

5, 6, 7 and 8 is the same as 4 players :)
That's a tad bit disappointing lol.
Thanks for responding ouo
Altough you would compare you stock to 7 players, and thus you almost always have Aura at 50% once you got less stocks

Derrick Tang too bad it cant help ness getting gimped because of his terrible recovery
Derrick Tang wow that's hella smart
Derrick Tang That got nerfed to fuck in the last patch.

Hey cFive, there's one thing I'd like to point out that this video doesn't mention, and that's what happens when Lucario takes a stock from his partner: "The Anubis Strategy"
While it's correct that the game calculates Aura based on how many stocks his opponents and his partner have, the game still doesn't see it as "Lucario has one stock and his partner has three; therefore Lucario gets Aura very early." Rather, the game sees it as "Lucario has died twice and his partner hasn't died at all."
Because of that, when Lucario loses all three of his stocks, the game then reasons that "Lucario has died three times and his partner hasn't died." If Lucario were to then take his partner's stock, the game applies the same reasoning at all times: Lucario has died three times and his partner hasn't died once.

I don't think it's cool or lame. I think it's strange, but as the saying goes "If an idea is stupid and it works, it's no longer a stupid idea."
The idea was just convenient at the moment.
It would be a really cool anime moment if the opposing Lucario self destructs at the start of the match and then you and your team mate self destruct to cancel out his aura Boost. That could be crazy enough to confuse and fluster the enemy team.

yeah what he said
"Is it cool or is it lame?"
HOW CAN THIS BE LAME??
cause you gaining stupid amounts of power, but this is not lame considering Lucario is losing a stock. So in a way its a fair deal of trade
it will never be lame

Interesting, so now I have an idea. You guys should make a video about how many stocks it would take lucario to be behind in a 1 on 1 99stock match. I'm curious to see how many it would take for him to be at max aura at 0% lol
pretty sure there is a limit to it
Well, the most you can have in a game is 8, so if the math is right:
2 player game - 130% max Aura
4 player game - 50% (divide 130 by 2.6)
6 player game - 19.23% (50/2.6)
8 player game - 7.34% (16.76/2.6)
So, like, in a 4v4-If that still existed at tournaments-Lucario could SD twice and be 2 stocks behind and have it depend on a teammate holding all 3 of their stocks still.
I just continued the ratio from a 2 player game to a 4 player game to the 6 and 8 player games. I don't know if the growth is a linear or some exponential rate.
Our Boy Roy limits are meant to be broken
I think it's pretty damn cool, honestly. I heard about it through ESAM the other day, so I was aware of it, but I appreciate the added details
Still much cooler than ye olde Pikachu/G+W meta.
setk Oh that. We don't talk about this.
Probably the most fascinating Smash video I've seen yet
Lucario has a 87.5% chance of being born a male, so if you say he you would be right most of the time.
I really like how this adds another dimension to the smash game itself. This makes for a really interesting strategy
Bloody Lucarionite, some Pokemon have noticeable physical appearances amongst males and females.
I agree with that
I started to notice this behaviour while smashing with some friends back then when the game was released. The fam started yelling "wow your Lucario's aura got bugged again, so broken" and I was like sure whatever, must be some kind of hidden ability so let's start exploiting it.

Alex Grachek Technically the only one we can prove is Pika since his tail n Mewtwo since genderless
Dimz Noms True, but Jigglypuff's gender is implied female by her alt costumes matching female trainer classes from the main series Pokémon games.
So, by your logic, this is a girl then?

Could you link Kurogane's channel in the description for convenience maybe? And do the same with channels you reference in the future? I know it might be more trouble than it's worth, so just wondering ^^
Did you....
JUST ASSUME ITS GENDER?!
Daniel Mendoza mhm
yes
And that's just.. not fun to me
It is not a bad play if they can't kill you at high percents, it's your fault for not being able to kill him, and you should *always* be scared of losing a stock against everyone, since gimps, stage spikes and bad di are everywhere.
>obligatory "git gud"
girugamish _
I think you hit the nail on the head.
It's cool that there's still new things to find in this game
you think saying "it" is confusing? try saying "nonbinary".
Apple Boy Non-binary.
Too much mouth work,I'll stick with "it".
nahn-bye-nair-ee
give me a challenge o~o
"He posts some really interest sh*t!"
That was so out of nowhere I couldn't help but pause the video and spend a good minute laughing my ass off.
Lame, but mostly because Lucario in general is lame
that was very rude
I am a Lucario main this is something to take into consideration based on play style I knew about this already but it was a good refresher
I think it's a cool strategy. That fact that one has to survive while the other goes nuts makes things interest.
Pretty cool.
Bois sounding like M2k with all this info.
2 years in and this stuff is still fucking amazing
This was really interesting! But a few questions: does this work in regular time matches? Like no stock limit matches? Would Lucario gain additional aura if his team is losing in a match like that? ( kind of like for glory doubles )
I think it's pretty neat. A little extra metagame aspect that increases the complexity of the doubles strategy. I don't like rage/aura mechanics, but since they are already in the game, might as well min-max them.
Definately a cool concept.
Gives Lucario more uniqueness and makes him very viable in doubles.
1:18 Kurogane Hammer taught me that Pac's pivot grab can frame perfectly be punished on reaction with Falcon Punch
Thats very cool i never knew lucario was this powerful. I wonder if Tsu knows about this.
Also i might use him alot more when i get a 3ds or a wii U and play him in tournaments and do training to test that power.
thank you Beefy Smash Doods ur the best.
Can you explain buffering inputs out of jump and freeze in a future video? They weren't covered in the input buffering video. Thanks!
Thanks! This video is quite helpful!
I'm a lucario main in sm4sh and knowing this will really help me out in battles.
*"DID YOU THINK YOU COULD BEAT ME?!"* -Heavy
It's a fairly interesting strategy that is not commonly seen in games, so it's cool.
Well done with the video!
Isn’t Lucario’s Aura just rage that lasts longer? Or do they stack? Or does Lucario even have rage at all?
Lucario’s aura and rage stacks.
Planet Earth dang, lucario is really op
Yeah but do they stack together? like you know how rage and aura increase damage? do they stack up and Lucario has "double rage" or does Lucario not experience rage
oh... damn... this is why Lucario is one of my mains
_I never rage_
Awesome analysis guys!
It's a risky gamble but it's a Hella fun one! I don't main lucario as much but it is a totally different kind of game when you got one in the game that can play
i think it's cool because it's not free and risky. Plus you can strategize against it the way you proposed at the end.
It's the definition of high risk, high reward.
Soooo... what about 4v4?
How big would Lucario's aura boost be and how early?
Or what about 7v1 (lucario being with the seven-characters army)
Whats the percents for middle values in 2v2? (When Lucario has 2 stocks, and there is a player with 1 stock, and a player with 3 stocks)
That strategy is easily one of the coolest
Lucario at the end of the match: Here's your receipt

I think that's awsome and reasonable!! I'm gonna try it, now!
So that's why my teamed lucario was absolutely wrecking in dubs when I was just floating around not dying ever as jiggs
As a Lucario main,
"Wew.
I shall play more doubles."
Does the "lose a stock power-up" work in time matches or Smash Run?
I say that it's cool. A really cool strategy.
