  • Gizelis Robotics developed a Robot CNC machining cell using a Yaskawa Motoman ES165D. The robot is equipped with spindle, automatic tool changer, lubrication and is completelly programmed from Delcam's Powermill software. The robot communicates with a PC and loads all program information, which gives it unlimited memory. The material shown in the video is steel but the cell can be used for machining a variety of materials, like marble, stone etc. If additional axis are added the robot can machine very large parts and be introduced in new fields of application. For more info please contact with info@grobotics.gr
    Key benefits:
The robot provides ultimate 3D flexibility that a 5 axes machining centre cannot deliver.
    Ideal for rapid prototyping.
Off-line programming eliminates hands-on robot programming thus allowing the robot to be used for production.
The robot can be used for additional tasks such as handling the machined part in and out of the cell reducing manual labour

The machining of steel in this video is only for demo purpose in order for people to understand that our robot can be very accurate if we reduce the speed of the machining process when producing in hard materials. The robot is ideal for soft materials as also for sculpturing in marble where it is cheaper and more flexible than any CNC machine. When we put the robot on a linear track we can make a very big machining cell with a low price.

It depends on the part tolerances, but in most cases robots don't have enough rigidity to machine steel. There is too much slop in the joints to produce an accurate piece with a high quality surface finish. I program robots and machine tools and I know first hand that a robot isn't capable of machining to hold a decent tolerance and repeatability. An ABB 4600 has a positional repeatability of .002 when it is brand new. Even cheap CNC mills are more repeatable than that. That .002 spec is also for no load. Now add a spindle that is machining steel and your repeatability and .002 tolerance goes out the window. This would be perfect for machining foam, plastic, wood and maybe aluminum.

The video shows the actual machining operation and finishing in steel. The limitation of the robot is the tolerance you mentioned. If this tolerance is ok then the robot is suitable for this application, cheaper from CNC machines and extremely more flexible as it can automate further the production line. For soft material the tolerance is fine and also for applications like marble it is the best. For extremely high accuracy then choose a CNC.

    Pretty nifty.
Can't be much fun to be near it with metal chips flying round in all directions.
Have you experienced it's ability to stop for crash detection loads?
Not a lot going for it over a good 5 axis router for doing the materials they are both best suited to, particularly with blocky shapes. Except where it was possible in a single setup to do an underside area..

good idea, but the home point position probably wont repeat better than +/- .030. So that will be the limiting tolerance. You need to develop a continuity touch system off several points of a sphere.
with some work this is the future for soft material machining. Its not rigid enough for steels and hard metal.

Excellent job. What is the max precision you can get and what is the max payload?

It takes forever to machine that part. Probably good for 5 axis functions.
    I like it anyway

Who even profiles a corner radius on a part like that? Hit up G.W. Schultz and they'll get you some custom radius cutters
