I didnt grow up hooping i was a football player. I’ve recently started playing basketball and i want to join an adult league (Im 21) but im trying to learn basic stuff. Luckily i do have a kinda decent jumpshot I can drain free throws consistently and Im a pretty decent 3 point shooter (not in game situation but when shooting around I can usually make at least half my threes) right now tho im struggling more to make open layups than to make catch and shoot 3s
relatable, no one taught me the fundamentals growing up, now i'm trying to use my passion for basketball to catch up enough to be able to play in a pickup game or something, decent shooter on my own but need a lot of knowledge/work to bring my game up
for the layup, sometimes when I run to the rim, I confuse my footwork, like I unintentionally started with my right leg when I'm supposed to go with the left first. so eventually I start with the right leg, 1-2 and my left leg will be lifted up whereas the correct footwork is starting with the left leg, 1-2 and the right leg lifted up with my hand.
This focused on the footwork, which is probably the most important fundamental of a layup. Secondly, getting the ball high to the corner of the square. It's common in youth leagues to only just make it over the rim with the ball, so using technique to get the ball high with correct footwork is the top priority to make the layups without any defence. Without these fundamentals in place, details that you're describing won't be effective. But it is certainly important to consider ball position after the fundamentals are established and practised!

Very good tutorial on how to lay up

By the time you're done you should be able to layup with any footwork
"OMG, I feel you! 😂 It's wild what's going on, but that's how we grow-by learning from our blunders! Let the lessons roll in!"
I would say it's the incorrect way of holding a ball because the defense can easily steal the ball when you going to keep it in front of your body.
Its fundamental of lay up. You should learn that first If you're a beginner. 😅😅😅
