Hi! Trying to upload this video was a copyright nightmare. I spent about 10 hours re-editing it so that it would stop getting claimed. I do apologize for being a day late from my usual upload time and if the video is a little wonky. Because of the edits, the clips won't always match what I'm saying in the video which creates some inconsistencies. Appreciate your understanding!🙏

    • @To-To
      @To-To 10 місяців тому

To help avoid this, don't a single clip for longer than 5 seconds -- some go for 8 but it depends -- don't cut scenes back to back -- meaning don't cut from 1 minute into ep 1, play that clip for 6 seconds, and then move forward ten seconds and cut from that same segment again; the bot will figure it out -- and NEVER use copyrighted music. I heard the OP playing in the background of your video. Never do that. It will almost always hit your video. If not now, it definitely will later and that always sucks.

What makes this show special to me is its extreme care in maintaining your sense of immersion. The characters are nuanced and not a checking a box for anime tropes, while the world isn't static and is shown to change over time according to their own unique customs. There also hasn't been a moment where I was thinking to myself, "I've seen this before", as I do with almost every other anime. Every episode is a treat.

  • @mpd2101

I couldn’t agree more! I feel that rather than being pigeonholed as a “slow” anime, Frieren actually gives the story and characters time to breathe. This makes the action scenes (which are some of the best animated action I’ve watched) have real stakes and weight and the animation absolutely shines! The build up to the fight with Aura, for example, makes the actual denouement (pardon my French😅) all the more devastating. Frieren is a rare thing, and a masterpiece of adaptation that has transcended its source and become something quite unique and beautiful.

    • @SableSymphony
      @SableSymphony  10 місяців тому +3

I love when I'm able to digest the story, characters, and setting instead of being given a second to breathe. Having well written downtime is something I wish more anime took advantage of. The action scenes essentially the cherry on top and make for a great reward for sitting through "slower" moments of the story

Personally, for me, it's a more personal version of Kino's journey and Mushishi. Especially with the level of peacefulness all three give.
Instead of the focus of the journey being the places, and it's culture, or the people they meet. It's about the traveling main characters, themselves.
The other two only do something similar at the end of their stories. Which... Makes sense since this is meant to be set AFTER the usual journey.
And it brings this type of story a breath of fresh air Giving such a niche sub genre in fantasy more attention, which makes a long time fan of said sub genre happy.🥰

What I like the most is how the world is refined and how discovering more about it is always linked to the characters journey but also to the themes of the story : humanity and time. It is a lesson in how to write a scenario, honestly. I love all the characters and would adopt the main cast if given the opportunity, but if I have to choose, I think my favorite of all of them is Flamme. I absolutely love how they handle world building in Frieren, basically by going the exact same route the hero’s party went we learn about the towns they were in, their people and their hardships and how they were affected by the demon king’s army, all while showing how their lives were AFTER the hero’s party passed through and how the party’s hand helped them (mostly Himmel and Heiter, but there were some mentions about Eisen and very few people still recognize Frieren, usually the ones that were kids back then or the noble ones who learned about the hero’s party deeds).
Also I love how they handle the topic of time passing, how brief human life can be and loss (all through Frieren’s eyes, considering her ridiculously long lifespan, and by “ridiculous” I don’t mean as an insult but rather how in some fantasy worlds elves are basically immortal or can live up to tens of thousands of years)

This story takes nothing more than known elements. It just combines them intelligently and it leaves out some commonly overused annoying elements like isekai, game play leveling, in game stat screens etc.
The best choice however is that the main characters aren't run thru the usual "need to get stronger" routine, instead it's focused on each characters development as a person, the emotional strain of ageing, outliving the ones you cherish or dying before them.
And one cannot underestimate the satisfying moment in ep 10 when Frieren for a short moment reveals her immense, almost ridiculous power.
Beyond that satisfaction it really drives home the fact she could easily single-handedly overpower any would-be-evil-demon-king to pop up from the backwoods, she could in fact dominate the world - yet she chooses not to do so....or maybe lacks the motivation to do so.

The fact that yoasobi wrote the op was a good enough reason in itself for me to watch it, but when I recognized that frieren has twin tales, I didn't think for a second (what can I say, I'm a Miku fan).
What I liked about the anime:
The smooth and pleasant artstyle (plus point that I didn't want to rip my eyes out when I saw the design of the "crowd characters", madhous did a good job with that one).
The fact that it's an exciting slice-of-life, wich needless to say that is rare nowdays.
The music. My personal favorite is that melody when the group is travelling, looking around or doing anything otherwise boring stuff (I don't know the name of that song, please help me out).
The characters etimology. Every main character has german words as names that somewhat reflect thier personality or meanig in the story.
(you said that you can't really relate with stark... His name means "strong" in german. I guess this is his whole personality XD).
    We also have:
    Frieren-freez
    Fern-distant/remote
    Himmel-heaven
    Eisen-iron
    Heiter-bright etc.
The characters evolution. Like when Frieren started to value time after Himmel died. My favorite was that Heiter quiet booze, it warmed my heart a bit.
    What I did NOT like:
Every episode ENDS. (but at least with some good music)

The premise was eerily similar to an RP character I made a while back. Ageless characters in general have interested me for a long time and I finally get to see a show that actually explores how that would affect someone's behavior, as well as their perception of time. I'm currently at episode 6 and yes, Frieren has been very relatable in spite of my own human lifespan.

It originally was basically something for the elite and gifted but as time went it got more and more widespread and you get wack specific spells like cleaning a bronze statue or something. The sheer mundanity of some of those spells makes it a very human (or relatable maybe) system that we could associate with real life electric appliances and such.

Hello! good VDO. For overhype or not ? I can say this. Since everyone talk about Frieren in Social media and everywhere
Some people is draw to try to watch it.
This is start of bad thing happen. What I found is
    - Too slow , it faster but it slow again
-Boring anime everything is too slow.
    - Overhype , not fun at all.
    - In live chat some one keep said "boring ep they just keep talking"
but mostly people (include me) will reply to them that "It just not anime for you , if you don't like don't watch it" This anime is good , too good. I love it so much. But I think soon we will see some hater since it a lot of hype.
    But who care haha.
I agree with everything in your VDO!

It's always sad to see people brush off amazing storytelling because there isn't something big happening every minute of every episode. They're definitely missing out but what can we do? Those of us that'll stick around for slower-paced storytelling will be rewarded with well animated fight scenes and unreal character development. I love what we've been getting with Frieren so far.

The first 4 episodes of Frieren are ABSOLUTE TRESSURE for slice of life/fantasy lovers. They give me Girls' Last Tour and Violet Evergarden vibe. Also speaking of character design, Eisen is peak character design - specifically the flashback shot of him wounded with poison arrows in ep 13. With that being said, I love all of our main cast so far - they're very likable and none of them are annoying for the sake of comedy. I also love how characters like Graf Granat aren't annoyingly stupid - how he (spoilers) recognised it wasn't Frieren that killed the guard. 10/10 anime and manga so far :)

I really hate seeing a fantasy anime where the character starts pulling out status screen like it's SAO. There's a lot of things that can maintain my suspension of disbelief, but a character suddenly pulling out a stat sheet is where I draw the line.

I started with isekais, like SAO, log horizon & Overlord. barring the 1st, i enjoy the genre.
This however, is a different beast entirely, a story i havent heard before. After the heros journey. It was that premise which brought me to this show and it made me cry in that 1st episode.
I think it deserves the praise it gets, and will be added to the list of great anime, especially slowpaced, feel good anime (such has Barakamon or Tanaka wants to sleep). There is some action, some excitement, but for the most part, it is a beautiful journey showing the world at peace, following the footsteps of their journey.
I will definitely add this to my binge watch list. And for the eventual season 2, i will hold in trepidation like all s2. Case in point with Goblin Slayer s2, there wasnt really a need to continue that story, and what we have now is im sorry to say, hot garbage.

I am not so sure I would call Naruto and One piece "fast paced", they spend like 4 episodes on a single fight which feels incredible slow to me. But yeah, Frieren is one of the best fantasy anime that have been made.
It is a nice change since we see so many bad harem cheat Isekai shows nowadays where protagonist kun gets hit by truck gun, go to a fantasy world where he gets some imba powers and a bunch of girls with little personality throws themselves over him while the protagonists powers means the bad guys can't really threaten him. You can only see so many shows with basically the same story before they becomes a bit boring and predictable.
There are good Isekai stories (and I am not sure if Himmel is an Isekai here, he might very well be since he do tick in the boxes of a hero summoned to beat the demon Lord) but we get more and more bad nowadays so getting a bit regular fantasy is great, particularly with really well written characters and good world building.
Anime elves are often a bit silly, Frieren actually feels like she is ancient even if she have that silly flaw with mimics. So yeah, 5 of 5 from me, great show and best anime I seen in a while (probably since the first season one "One punch man", I really liked that one for some reason, not sure why).

Execution, yes, I agree that execution is a big driver of the positive reception of the show. I love it myself, and only more so with every new episode. While I have no foreknowledge of the manga for comparison, the whole tone of the show is expertly crafted and conveyed. It has deep, well written characters that ooze with cool subtext you see all the time watching. It's writing that doesn't treat you like an idiot or a toddler. You call it a "slow burner", but I think I disagree with that characterization. Maybe because when I use that term I think of a show that has a lot of boring parts and short blips of interest. If you are only holding up the shonen-esque battles scenes as the "good" parts, then I guess you could say that, but I would still disagree that the rest is bland by comparison. From start to finish, I feel that each episode is interesting, engaging, and we see development. Because the animation is top-shelf, we can discern for ourselves the subtleties of characters expressions and mannerisms without the tropes like excessively switching to chibi character models with exaggerated expressions. The overall sound design is fantastic but I still want to point out that the timing of the musical vignettes are impeccable and add so much to high impact scenes. The SFX are no slouch either, being everything it needs to be, but more refined, for the fantasy setting. The reason we are sitting at a 9+ average rating is because many of us know how rare it is for a show to fire on all cylinders like Frieren does. The last show I can remember to come out of the gate and surprise me like this with this level of execution was the first season of One Punch Man (another Mad House production; back in 2015 I think). Right now my only wish is that this same studio keeps it and finishes the full adaptation, instead of dropping it or farming it out to a different studio.

    • @SableSymphony
      @SableSymphony  10 місяців тому

I agree with everything here! My reason for referring to Frieren as a "slow burner" is just because it is IF you compare it to the popular Shonen Jump anime that carry the medium throughout the west. They're the standard that's been set for what's considered "good" so it made sense in my head at least but I 100% understand where you're coming from. Just trying to relate the script to your more typical anime watcher in hopes of getting them to watch the anime. I'm also hoping that Madhouse continues to adapt Frieren. It'd be a major upset if the quality of the anime dipped because of a change in studio and staff.

Sure, it's oversaturated which gives it the illusion of not being great but it isn't hard to pick out ones that are actually good. Isekai like Welcome to Demon School Iruma-kun, Re:Zero, Ascendance of a Bookworm, and Gate are all great examples of isekai being done correctly.

I would disagree. The only thing separating fantasy from isekai is the extra step of having the main character be transported to a new world. Assuming everything about Frieren from production to the story stays the same if it was an isekai, would this be not nearly as good simply because it would have the isekai label on it? Both isekai and fantasy can be good or bad as well as any other genre of anime. It would be a shame to overlook a great story because of a label it may or may not have.

Meh. The praise this anime/manga gets is grating. Many of Frieren's fans are annoying as well. It's not even that I entirely hate the anime/manga. Its high points are genuine 10/10's for me. But, there are times when the anime/manga makes me feel disgusted if not pained to the point I'd say it's a 0/10 experience. I despise with a passion the morality the writing tries to present, but more than that, the people who not only try to justify it, but revel in it. It has nothing to do with sexuality mind you like some might assume such a grievance to be about. I don't mind degenerates at all. I don't find sexual desire for characters disgusting. But, what I do find disgusting is those who look for excuses to indulge in vile monstrous behavior and desires while acting like they are morally righteous in doing so. Nothing sickens me more than evil done in the name of false virtue.
Frieren's dynamic with demons facilitates this like crack to drug addicts and everytime I see it I feel genuinely repulsed by it. I haven't been as disgusted with a part of a fanbase since witnessing the takes from rampant Redo of Healer fans who treated Keyaruga as some sort of symbol of moral good and righteousness. While Frieren herself is obviously not as vile as such a person as that, her position is not at all morally respectable to me. I don't believe she herself sees herself as some sort of moralistic angel, but rather someone who acts in what she believes is the best interest of what she cares about, even if that means becoming a monster in some respects. But, her fans will certainly present herself as such, and it's so infuriating, and it makes me very emotionally distant from the character herself since I question the intent of the author their self with the writing at times.
I feel incredibly sympathetic at the dilemma demons find themselves in, being born with the physical restraints forced upon them through their genetics to act in vile ways while having just a morsel of humanity which only has developed in them to be better predators. This leading to various demons having echos of humanistic showings, with some even desperately wanting to be able to coexist with others peacefully, but being unable to do so despite their efforts, and even causing mayhem in their attempts to do so, I find truly tragic and upsetting to see. Frieren's disposition that they must be exterminated and that any attempt at coexistence is negative because the effort to do so has repeatably lead to human deaths is very off-putting to me.
All life has a right to 1. try to survive and 2. fight against their fate and better themselves. Demons have a right to fight for survival just as humans do, even if they are predators to humans. But, far more than that, demons striving to go against their instincts to try to grasp better emotional understanding so that they may coexist in peace is absolutely admirable. It is an exact reflection of the human spirit to defy their fate when they are put in dire straights by the forces that be. Frieren's position that they should forsake 1. and 2. fundamentally disgusts me. Demons may be a different species than humans, but they are sentient life. To me, their extermination is still genocide and not the result I would want. As one form of sentient life to the next, I would far rather desire an effort to be made to save them from what they were born to be. Be it through magic, science, or selective breeding or what not, anything is a more admirable route than genocide in my eyes. There is nothing moral or heroic about Frieren's position in my eyes.
A popular contrast to Frieren's moralistic position that I respect would be Goku's from Dragon Ball Z. Frieza, the main antagonist of the Namek Saga, was in many respects far, far worse than any demon in Frieren, who is single-handedly responsible for more deaths than all of demonkind combined, and it's not even remotely close. And, despite this, despite Frieza murdering his best friend even in front of him, Goku offers Frieza a chance at redemption by showing him mercy even when he didn't deserve it. To me, that's the moralistic position of someone I can respect and see as a true Hero despite Goku not necessarily trying to play the role of Hero in first place. In my eyes, someone doing wrong is not an excuse to become a monster in response and pretend you are righteous in doing so. And yet, clearly, many people are just like that, and this clearly applies to real life too as we have a culture that encourages it, where people will look for 10 year old tweets of a problematic joke some stranger made and use that as justification to wish death on them, dox them, and completely dehumanize them. This anime/manga clearly plays into that toxic mindset and I find that absolutely disgusting.
Now, I do not know if that is the intention of the author, but regardless of if it is or isn't, the result speaks for itself and I genuinely hate when I see it. Thus, my grievance with the anime/manga (of which I am current on both). 10/10 high points, 0/10 low points. At this point, I'm mostly just watching/reading to be current with the lore as to enrich my own fanworks derivative of the material of which I do take great joy in and even share with my significant other for our mutual enjoyment of partaking in them. Needless to say, the anime/manga leaves me with mixed feelings.

That prediction comes from the fact that most anime fail to stay relevant regardless of how good they are. They often fade into obscurity in the middle of airing and don't tend to last longer than a couple of episodes at most. Violet Evergarden is something that I would consider to be a masterpiece on par with Frieren but has already been long forgotten.
