“This is not a sponsored video, and they gave us everything for free and supplied the ppl to hook everything up.” But remember everyone, it is NOT sponsored. 😉 🤫

The disclosure is fine. A “sponsored video” means the company is paying for the product placement and provides the product claims. The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) requires disclosure if a company provides the product for free to try out. It’s up to the viewer to decide whether the review is unbiased.

It’s an “in-kind” sponsorship, they might not be sponsoring it with money but with the free merch and having someone from the company to set everything up is another form of sponsorship.
Let’s face it, do you really think he would make a video (some would say free advertising) on products that he got free talking about how horrible everything is and was?

@@stukim99 We are not complaining about that.
We complain when UA-camr's say something is not sponsored, when they got the product for free. Which means it is sponsored.

Vivant is super expensive and locks you into LONG contracts

@@AndNowThis..this right here is a fair point and question. Here’s the answer: If the system got installed and I hated it? I’d issue a review saying as much and I’d have them come back and gut it all, then move on to the next one. I chose Vivint for the studio because I have Vivint at my house, but my house has limitations - there’s no HVAC, for example, so the thermostat can’t be evaluated, nor can a number of AI smart integrations.

Great video Caleb. It does need to be said that everything mentioned here can be achieved using Home Assistant + numerous brands of smart devices. You can do a lot more complex things too.
Where Vivint wins out is the convenience factor. Easier to maintain and probably less time consuming to learn.

    • @Caleb_Denison

That’s what I tried to convey at the beginning. You can DIY it, but that is not for everyone, even the tech savvy among us.

I have Vivint and it's decent. It does require a monthly fee and when you start adding items (cameras, detectors, etc) the monthly fee keeps going up. I've also had issues often where if there is too much activity by the front door, the doorbell camera may detect it but not record or sometimes record and not notify me. It seems a bit expensive but it is convenient

  • @brazghost

Not sponsored, but they gave it for free for you to use forever. So it is sponsored, because you did not experience what a normal customer would and very big incentive to not talk negatively

That's awesome they have so much to offer. 10 years ago when I bought a house for the 1st time we got Vivant Home Security of sensors. That alone paid for itself with the discount on home insurance with a security system system.

Is an account required? Is there a monthly fee? Allowing some strange company name Vivint into my home is a non-starter. Home Assistant, while more complex is more versatile and operates independently so offers a real privacy solution.

Love your videos Caleb and don’t get angry with this question, but why do UA-cam videos in Portland Oregon? You could save 20% on your cost of living just about anywhere else in this country. I understand having roots in an area, but so many content creators have moved to less expensive places to live in order to make more money. Just wondering that is all. Keep up the great work.

Ignoring the 'not sponsored' disclaimer, the deal-breaker for me is the absence of end-to-end encryption with their cloud-based camera services, something that is far too common in most of these pre-packaged home security systems. It's too bad.

Vivint is a local company and people hate them around here. They are the worst company to deal with from garbage customer service to pushy salesman to not letting people cancel. Avoid at all costs!
Sad to see DT go this way. A little bit of research would have gone a long way before making this mistake

Seems like Vivint got into hot water last year with a lawsuit for patent infringement for $45 Million USD. Also, apparently Vivint was acquired by Telus, a Canadian Telecom. So not really independent. Not to mention, I wouldn't pay the subscription fees, as I'm very much against subscription fees for hardware devices. Its why I have my parents' house under Blink from Amazon, their system has an option subscription service for cloud backup, but you can just plug in a 128gb USB memory stick and have quite a lot of storage for the price of said stick.

My Google Home didn't like you telling it to turn the studio on and off because "that device isn't set up yet" in my apartment. Fortunately, I haven't named any of my smart devices "Studio." You need to be careful telling Google (or Alexa) to do things in videos or you can annoy your viewers.

Very disappointed with this video. I appreciate Caleb’s insightful reviews on displays and audio, especially when he does comparison videos. However, this is just an infomercial for Vivint. Something like this needs references to competitors and industry standards (numbers for nit nerds) to make it a reasonable review. This is not what I tune into Digital Trends and particularly Caleb for. 😢

Caleb - QUESTION for you - I have a Sony XBR65A9F. Nice TV, a few years old. With everything nowadays coming from a streaming app, I've noticed what seems to be slow CPU performance - switching between apps or between "channels" within apps and I frequently need to restart the TV (reboot) when an app freezes. MY QUESTION: would a newer Sony oled like the A95L work better / faster in these areas?
