the screw is holding. the more i’ve been playing to try and get the tone the more comfortable i’m getting with the guitsr again. and the nut is functioning quite well with the tooth picks. the wood glue is also a great idea, maybe for my next setup for the guitar i’ll do that.
Kinda sounds like a slight truss rod adjustment possibly to fix the wonky issues around the first three frets ,I'd take it to a good repair shop to just have them iron out the issues for once & for all for you bro
I don’t consider shims ghetto repairs and the unwrapped strings make excellent shims in a pinch. You just did what I’m sure many professionals techs have done on tour making something work out of what you have, it’s only rigging or ghetto if it fails or looks completely sloppy and don’t function. Really nothing wrong with your high e string nut shim . The older Dean import are some really great guitars for the money I had a 2010 silver Dave Mustaine and it was incredible. It had his live wires the best active pickups I’ve ever played real Grovers and Dunlop flush mount strap locks and I got it for 300 used lol . Wish I still had it.

@@Synthedelic yeah you simply made a shim ain’t nothing wrong with it as long as it works. The shims you buy are just a fancy version of what you made for free.
As long as you don’t get one that’s too big. It’s really personal preference. i cant really notice too much difference between the smaller one it came with or the one that’s too big.
tbh I always keep the original nut on any floyd equipped guitar I buy even if I upgrade the bridge. Also, are you pre-stretching the shit out of your strings before you lock the nut down after a restring? that really helps with tuning issues. as far as intonation issues go, that's up to buying a floyd saddle key. I use a skyscraper guitars brand one, it works well. I also find that Floyd 1000 saddles are taller than Floyd originals and don't choke out on the saddle mounting screws when you do big dime squeals. One last thing, as far as the nut and holding with the toothpicks and all, I find it's honestly better to just have tholes re-drilled by somebody experienced.
I changed the locking but because i absolutely obliterated it with sandpaper and a shitty file. Not my brightest moments. Yes i do stretch the strings before i lock everything down. i cant stand when they aren’t stretched and go out of tune immediately. the floyd i have in the guitar now is fantastic. it doesn’t stay sharp or flat. it’s dead on. i believe i’m using the same bridge saddles from the 1000. As for taking my guitar to a shop, that’s not really in my budget currently. but within the years it’ll have definitely gone to a shop if i don’t get a job at a shop first.
You have no idea how bad I want a dean ml, I sadly can’t get one because of me living smack in the middle of Canada, and no one sells them here, except reverb where the prices are almost 3,000 dollars

I had a cheap MLX about 15 years ago. I hated it because it was super light, unbalanced and overall just a crappy guitar. Since then I've wanted a Dean From Hell, but now with Dean not making them anymore and the prices of used ones being ridiculous, I may have to settle on a select or a 79. Floyd Roses can be such a love/hate relationship. You may have to try to train yourself to not press so hard on the strings to alleviate the tuning issue. That seems to be an issue with most guitars with jumbo frets. It may also be that the locking nut sits a hair too high on that side of the fretboard and I'm not sure how you would fix that.
I too think that the nut may be too high, but i already did some sanding to it and removed about a millimeter. It DID make the tuning a bit better. I think the best thing i did was in this video, i put a piece of the high e string on the back side of the nut and it leveled it out to the neck better. I go back and forth between having 4 springs on the Floyd to 3 and never liking how it’s acting. It’s either too loose or too tight. I wont ever buy a new guitar from dean again. I really don’t like that whole dime lawsuit fiasco. no respect. This guitar cost 1300 brand new when i got it and me personally after playing it. i wouldn’t of spent more than 500 on it. I’ll probably never sell it because it’s my actual dream guitar. It just kinda sucks 🥲
@@Synthedelic for $1300, it should have come with a better FR than the special. I have a $300 Kramer that has a special on it. I'm not even sure if I'll ever get one. I'm kind of over funky shaped guitars and I have too many as it is.

The toothpick part for the but is actually a decent idea, but it should be dipped in wood glue and let sit to dry before screwing anything into it
