As a trumpet player in the 90’s, Cake was my glimmer of hope that a rock band out there could use my services. I was wrong, but there was hope.

Tenor Sax player here. Used to listen to ska just because I wanted to support the dudes out there blowing wind for a living. Sadly, unless you beat skins or strum the gee-tar, there's not a lot of work out there.

this is probably their best track right here. second i'd take "short skirt/long jacket". third they have done several covers of other bands songs including a cool version of " i will survive".

My 20 something kids were into Cake, many years ago. They turned us on to Cake. My wife and I took them to a Cake concert at a nearby college campus. It was one of the greatest times we had as a family. We all love music, from different eras. But Cake brought it all together. It was awesome.

I used to work in an open office where many people worked together. We would alternate between the R&B Hip Hop station and the Pop Rock station each day. One day the Cake song "Let Me Go" came on the rock station with the opening lyrics:

mid/late 90's to early 2000's have some of the best music. There was an influx of odd music that I dont hear lately.

DUDE This band is so awesome!!! The singer has a totally uniquetiming I've never heard it before. Like he does it it's great they came up with their own sound! I was in Tower Records in Jerusalem in 1999 (I think). I was on a research trip and had some time off. I went there to buy a CD, but didn't know what. In the background, this came on. I probably listened to half the album and then went and bought it. So started my relationship with Cake.
Most of Cake's songs are about love and relationships, but they also include metaphors, and sometimes just nonsense. My interpretation of this song is a guy who's trying everything he can to be with a woman, which is trying too damn hard, told like a guy in a car race that was long over but he keeps going.
My interpretation is that the guy and his girl ARE bumping uglies. He is racing and chasing, going as fast as he can. He’s going for speed. He’s going the distance. And she’s all alone in her time of need. He’s just focused on finishing the race - he’s not concerned with her. She hopes the memory of being with this loser will fade.

What's up, Mr. Video. I actually met these guys while doing an all volunteer Solar job in San Francisco in 2011. They helped sponsor a solar project for Telegraph Hill community center here in the city. There's even a time lapse video of the project. The video/song is about addiction and ignoring your loved ones. The song itself uses racing references for metaphors, while the video is using climbing the corporate ladder/greed as the addiction.
He's going the distance, he's going for speed... (He's going all in, ball's to the wall)
She's all alone, all alone in her time of need (This could be interpreted many ways, but I take it as he has ignored his relationships for his addictions... drugs, power, money...)
Basically, the guy is doing anything and everything he can to obtain his love (not the woman, the addiction). So much so, that he even loses sight of his original goal (Long ago somebody already left with the cup. (A cup is usually the trophy in car racing. But signifies that he'll never achieve his goals now but he still feeds his addiction.)) Very powerful song.
