I ain’t gonna lie. At first I was like…BLASPHEMY! Then I thought about it…compared to other axis locking knives… it really doesn’t hold up. Especially now. Seriously, there are some axis locking bangers out there. For half the price. I own three bugouts, I love the clip, the weight, the profile and super thin nature, but it just keeps going up in price with no upgrades in site. I emailed Benchmade, a couple months ago. I suggested revamping the Bugout, with a vertical locking pin and a coil spring, as opposed to a horizontal steel pin and two omega springs. Like the BM Anthem, or the newer Microtech Ram-Lok. The rep from BM told me to keep my opinions to myself.
Only one slightly belligerent comment so far. Even those that are Benchmade fans agree with my points. I think 7 years ago they were priced slightly high at $100. Brother, I can not be mad at you for this. I bought my Bugout back in the day when the hype train was running hot. I had to know what it was all about. I was never happy with the Grivory, so that pushed me to try my first scale swap. I got the Flytanium G10 scales. It was like night and day, so much better! Still a little small and light for me, but much better. As far as the price, it's bad, but as far as Benchmade is concerned, it's really more reasonable than what they have been putting out lately.
@TimsSchoolOfFish Yes, that is a prime example of extreme pricing. They won't stop until the devoted fan say no. Brand loyalty is a real thing until you lose it. (ZT, Gerber, etc.)
I just bought my girl the blacked out version for $120 new on Duluth trading (with a $20 code-still $140 now afaik). She's always wanted one so at 120 the butterfly tax was easier to swallow.
Back when they first came out they were $100-$120.....honestly my most carried knife around the house. Nothing carries quite like it in basketball shorts! To each their own.
I’ve had a Bugout for 5 years, I paid $100 back then. It should have been $80! Now they’re $166 to $180. Benchmade thinks to much for their knives! I won’t buy another one
I think $80 is about right but only because it’s USA made. If it were Chinese made it would be a $35 knife. They definitely have a very high opinion of themselves. I prefer Spyderco. But to each his own. Thank you my friend 👊🏻
I bought a bugout and a delica 4 recently. The delica is half the price and every bit as good as the bugout, if not better. Minus the premium steel on the bugout.
Sacred 🐮time! My personal thought is that it had a place when it first came out (when S30V was still collectively accepted as a super steel) as the lightest, sharpest, and most price-accessible way to get an excellently performing EDC (like a true lightweight EDC, not us psychos who carried ZTs at the time). Spyderco had the LW series and, yes, some bellyached about the FRN, but I think the majority begrudgingly accepted the cost and weight savings to get a well-designed knife in a good steel. IMO, the final shot across the bow that seals the Bugout's fate is the Bel Air. Yeah, Kershaw may be a day late and a dollar short on putting their rival to bed (AXIS lock patent notwithstanding), but it's basically an upgrade in every way. So, thank you Benchmade, but please, do try to keep up.
I could never understand brand loyalty or country of origin loyalty. Folks will swear that knife is the best thing since sliced bread just because of the name on it. Heck, the Sitivien ST-110 is a better knife. Yah, I said it. I've seen and held plenty of Benchmade and not impressed by any of them. I'll probably get ostracized now. Man, could I go on a rant. I don't know which is worse, knife brand loyalty or gun brand loyalty.
@@TimsSchoolOfFish Knife sheep. Ok, I'll quit while I'm ahead. Not yet... You know what funny, I get more love from the slip joint folks than the modern knife folks, why is that? Is it because I'm not making videos of high dollars knives, that I can't afford by the way. I have a passion for knives, period. I'm not looking to be the next youtube millionaire. Oh, you don't post the latest and greatest, that knife has junk steel, that knife is old news. I'm just trying to make some friends and put out some decent videos but sometimes I feel like folks are looking at me and thinking who is this guy and why is he trying to get in our exclusive club. There, now I'm done.
@@raybo34 I went through the same. The first to accept me were the traditional guys. It took a lot longer for the modern folder guys to give me any love. A lot of knife channel subscribers are caught in that cycle of “cool what’s the newest one now”. But most grow out of it when they realize that there’s countless new knives put out every month and most of them are just like a million other knives. Most eventually get past that. So it takes more time to make a dent with modern knives. Keep doing what you’re doing my friend 👊🏻
Thanks for the reality check! Just way too expensive for what it is. Could never bring myself to spend that kind of money for something so cheap looking. Lots of better choices out there.
I purchased a Benchmade 531 with G10 before the Bugout was released. I remember seeing the Bugouts and saying to myself, I already have a better Benchmade than that. Back then most Benchmades were around. $130 to $140. Don't they have a plastic handled knife for $200 hundred dollars now?
I will never buy a benchmade knife. I'm not a fan or a customer. But the bugout was designed with weight management in mind. Like for ultralight backpackers. So that's why it is flimsy, strength was not supposed to be the main feature. Now, I will always reach for a Lightweight Spyderco before anything benchmade offers, but yeah.
It is a surprisingly tough knife. Dutch Butchcraft boys put one through the paces and it held up. It’s still to expensive for what you get. 75 bucks would be about right imho.
May look cheap but it certainly isn't( butterfly tax). HOWEVER- im glad there is a fan base and that this US company is making the money. I wouldn't buy one even if I could afford it.
@@TimsSchoolOfFish I agree they are overpriced and there are better knives on the market, BUT I dont begrudge them their money or their fan base. If folks want to spend it why do I care
The Bugout is too small a knife for me ... agree on all 3 of your issues (clip, ergos, frn/grn scales). The Deka is a better, cheaper version of the same knife...still pretty small.
I thought you did a good review of it Tim! The knife to me looks pretty nice at first glance. But after your review, I can understand why it's not your cup of tea. It has some great action and I can't comment on how it feels in the hand, but for that amount of money, one would think there would be some better looking scales on it for sure. Especially after I hear that folks have changed the scales. Keep up the good work my friend! Appreciate your thoughts!
I'm with ya. Still relatively new to The knife game within the last few years and Benchmade never made sense to me. I abhor Grivory and was never a fan of the axis lock anyway. But they built a brand that people somewhere flock to and dump all their money into.
"Looks like a Ganzo knife"...ooooh, shots fired! 🤪🤣Great review and I agree with what you said here, it's not for me either. 👍Thanks for sharing, take care my friend and Cheers!
I got a couple of them and probably agree mostly! Definitely overpriced! And not just the Bugout but every Benchmade they have is over priced ! The would be good value if the price was 30-40% lower like it was 10-15 years ago for the exact same knives! Thanks for sharing your thoughts brother!!
I think that’s a lot of the problem. 10 years ago they were accessible knives with a super steel. But lately they have a very high opinion of themselves, or they’re taking egregious advantage of inflation… likely both. Thank you my friend 👊🏻
It would be good for $100 then you could just just spend another hundred for decent scales and clip. Or you could just get a Deka with Gmascus scales for under $200 and be done with it.
I own one and like it. But I also understand every single point you made. Don't care about the USA made, you're also foreigners to me ;) I got a mini Ritter some 20 years ago and that was way cheaper. I mostly use Civivi these days.
It is very overpriced! I would spend that money and more on a knife worth that amount, but I’d never buy this knife. This is a loaner. Thank you my friend 👊🏻
I never had one in my hand and I probably never will. For all the reasons you mentioned I can’t understand why for some this is such a grail knife? Hey to each his own if you like it then rock and roll but I just don’t see it.
@@BrendanCS Probably not, but that’s not cool without consent. I used editor to remove it and reached out to him on IG to apologize. I appreciate you letting me know.
@@TimsSchoolOfFish No worries, and for the record, the bugout is indeed super over rated. People want the butterfly, but benchmade's been out of their mind with prices lately.
Definitely overpriced but certain authorized dealers you buy from in person have great sales, they’re just not allowed to advertise them. My son got the CF Elite for $135 and I got the air craft aluminum scaled one in m390 for $210. If you’re gonna spend that kind of $$ they sell for now I’d just go for the OG 940! Butterfly tax is real 😂!!
Tell us what you really think why don't ya ? 🤣 Truth be told Tim , I don't own a Benchmade because of the afor mentioned butterfly tax . I've always liked the look of the 940 Osbourne and the Mini Griptilian though !
I love me some Milwaukees. I have about 6 variations that are my everyday beaters. If I break it or lose it, just buy another because the price is right. They’re tough as hell too! Thank you my friend 👊🏻
Benchmade is no longer a competitive brand. What that means is their products are fine, but their prices to not align with the market. Hogue, Microtech, Spyderco, and Protech all make better USA alternatives to the entire Benchmade catalog at better prices.
Agreed on all points! It just feels and looks like an Amazon knife… but not at an Amazon price. I’ve got far better Ganzo knives and that’s no exaggeration. To each his own I suppose. Thank you my friend 👊🏻

Agreed on all points!
Well said 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Psychos who carried a ZT 🤣
Thank you my friend 👊🏻
I could never understand brand loyalty or country of origin loyalty. Folks will swear that knife is the best thing since sliced bread just because of the name on it. Heck, the Sitivien ST-110 is a better knife. Yah, I said it. I've seen and held plenty of Benchmade and not impressed by any of them. I'll probably get ostracized now. Man, could I go on a rant. I don't know which is worse, knife brand loyalty or gun brand loyalty.
Agreed on all counts, my brother!
Thank you my friend 👊🏻
@@raybo34
I went through the same.
I’ve never liked em enough to actually buy one, also at the same price point there is so much better options out there.
Agreed!
This one is a passaround.
Thank you my friend 👊🏻
Thanks for the reality check! Just way too expensive for what it is. Could never bring myself to spend that kind of money for something so cheap looking. Lots of better choices out there.
Agreed!
This one is a passaround.
Thank you my friend 👊🏻
I picked up a clone for 30 bucks. That’s all I needed to see. Bought the PM2 and love it.👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼
Yessir!
Thank you my friend 👊🏻
Pm2 is another overrated overpriced knife
I purchased a Benchmade 531 with G10 before the Bugout was released. I remember seeing the Bugouts and saying to myself, I already have a better Benchmade than that. Back then most Benchmades were around. $130 to $140. Don't they have a plastic handled knife for $200 hundred dollars now?
Yep!
And they have one for $500 🤣
Thank you my friend 👊🏻
I will never buy a benchmade knife. I'm not a fan or a customer. But the bugout was designed with weight management in mind. Like for ultralight backpackers. So that's why it is flimsy, strength was not supposed to be the main feature. Now, I will always reach for a Lightweight Spyderco before anything benchmade offers, but yeah.
Agreed!
Thank you my friend 👊🏻
940 is better than anything spyderco has
It is a surprisingly tough knife. Dutch Butchcraft boys put one through the paces and it held up. It’s still to expensive for what you get. 75 bucks would be about right imho.
I’m sure it’s durable and all that… but my gripes are still valid 😆
$75 seems about right to me too!
Thank you my friend 👊🏻
May look cheap but it certainly isn't( butterfly tax). HOWEVER- im glad there is a fan base and that this US company is making the money. I wouldn't buy one even if I could afford it.
They’re making much more money than they should be.
Definitely not cheap.
Thank you Kathleen 👊🏻
@@TimsSchoolOfFish I agree they are overpriced and there are better knives on the market, BUT I dont begrudge them their money or their fan base. If folks want to spend it why do I care
@@kathleensmith370
Me neither.
Which is why I said exactly that at 5:51
The Bugout is too small a knife for me ... agree on all 3 of your issues (clip, ergos, frn/grn scales). The Deka is a better, cheaper version of the same knife...still pretty small.
I’d have a Deka over this any day!
Thank you my friend 👊🏻
I thought you did a good review of it Tim! The knife to me looks pretty nice at first glance. But after your review, I can understand why it's not your cup of tea. It has some great action and I can't comment on how it feels in the hand, but for that amount of money, one would think there would be some better looking scales on it for sure. Especially after I hear that folks have changed the scales. Keep up the good work my friend! Appreciate your thoughts!
That’s it isn’t?
$170 for a knife and then another $100 or $150 for upgrades and now it’s a $300 knife worth $75 at best.
Thank you my friend 👊🏻
I'm with ya. Still relatively new to The knife game within the last few years and Benchmade never made sense to me. I abhor Grivory and was never a fan of the axis lock anyway. But they built a brand that people somewhere flock to and dump all their money into.
Sheep!
Thank you my friend 👊🏻
"Looks like a Ganzo knife"...ooooh, shots fired! 🤪🤣Great review and I agree with what you said here, it's not for me either. 👍Thanks for sharing, take care my friend and Cheers!
Shots fired right across the bow 🤣
Thank you my friend 👊🏻
Finally, someone tells the truth! I buy Kizer blades myself. I think the prices are right and Kershaw still rock thr same lol for half the price e!
I call em as I see em.
Thank you my friend 👊🏻
I am with you. That price is ridiculous lol
Thank you my friend 👊🏻
Good Morning 😊 I like the blade 😉 Thanks for the review and sharing Buddy 🤗 Have a great day 🙏🏽 Greetings from South Africa 🇿🇦
You too!
Thank you my friend 👊🏻
I own the Benchmade Mini Griptilian and Spyderco Delica 4. I can't justify paying that much for a Bugout.
Agreed!
Thank you my friend 👊🏻
They make good knives but meh too many other sweet knives to pay that for materials. I agree 💯
Thank you my friend 👊🏻
I got a couple of them and probably agree mostly! Definitely overpriced! And not just the Bugout but every Benchmade they have is over priced ! The would be good value if the price was 30-40% lower like it was 10-15 years ago for the exact same knives! Thanks for sharing your thoughts brother!!
I think that’s a lot of the problem.
10 years ago they were accessible knives with a super steel.
But lately they have a very high opinion of themselves, or they’re taking egregious advantage of inflation… likely both.
Thank you my friend 👊🏻
I agree ( any knife you got to spend more money on to make it ok is a no for me ).
Exactly!
Thank you my friend 👊🏻
It would be good for $100 then you could just just spend another hundred for decent scales and clip. Or you could just get a Deka with Gmascus scales for under $200 and be done with it.
Would rather a Deka any day!
Thank you my friend 👊🏻
@@TimsSchoolOfFish Not even close.
And top of everything, you've chosen my favorite colour too 🤣🤣🤣
Hahaha sorry bro.
Thank you my friend 👊🏻
I have a couple of there cheaper models I like but that bug out never appealed to me. Love my Spyderco knives!
Agreed!
Thank you my friend 👊🏻
I own one and like it. But I also understand every single point you made. Don't care about the USA made, you're also foreigners to me ;) I got a mini Ritter some 20 years ago and that was way cheaper. I mostly use Civivi these days.
Can’t go wrong with CIVIVI… they make some great stuff!
Thank you my friend 👊🏻
I own/want to own ZERO tramp stamp knives. Kershaw and Spyderco make affordable USA made knives. No need to pay the butterfly tax. Cheers. 👐
Couldn’t agree more!
Thank you my friend 👊🏻
That seems extremely expensive for what it is.
It is very overpriced!
I would spend that money and more on a knife worth that amount, but I’d never buy this knife.
This is a loaner.
Thank you my friend 👊🏻
I would rather spend $170 at VGNC, or on a Gil Hibben!!!
YES!!!
Thank you my friend 👊🏻
I never had one in my hand and I probably never will. For all the reasons you mentioned I can’t understand why for some this is such a grail knife? Hey to each his own if you like it then rock and roll but I just don’t see it.
Yep same.
It looks and feels like an Amazon knife.
Which is cool… for an Amazon price!
Thank you my friend 👊🏻
Ya took Best Damn EDC's image for your intro
My friend made the intro for me.
Is it really an image of his?
I certainly won’t use it again if so.
Thanks for the heads up!!!
🙏🏻
I just reached out to him.
I’m really annoyed that my friend would put me in that position.
I don’t play that BS!
Thanks for letting me know, brother!
@@TimsSchoolOfFish I'm not sure he'd be bothered if you used it but yes it is one of his
@@BrendanCS
Probably not, but that’s not cool without consent.
I used editor to remove it and reached out to him on IG to apologize.
I appreciate you letting me know.
@@TimsSchoolOfFish No worries, and for the record, the bugout is indeed super over rated. People want the butterfly, but benchmade's been out of their mind with prices lately.
Looks like a great blade !
Meh!
The blade itself is great… the rest of the knife, not so much.
Thank you my friend 👊🏻
Definitely overpriced but certain authorized dealers you buy from in person have great sales, they’re just not allowed to advertise them. My son got the CF Elite for $135 and I got the air craft aluminum scaled one in m390 for $210. If you’re gonna spend that kind of $$ they sell for now I’d just go for the OG 940! Butterfly tax is real 😂!!
940 is a classic in my opinion.
That’s different.
Thank you my friend 👊🏻
Tell us what you really think why don't ya ? 🤣
Truth be told Tim , I don't own a Benchmade because of the afor mentioned butterfly tax .
I've always liked the look of the 940 Osbourne and the Mini Griptilian though !
I’ve never been one to hold back🤣
Thank you my friend 👊🏻
It is; Ill stay with knives that bury the blade deep in the scales like me Milwaukee pocket knife where as it wears down no tip stick out close,
I love me some Milwaukees.
I have about 6 variations that are my everyday beaters.
If I break it or lose it, just buy another because the price is right.
They’re tough as hell too!
Thank you my friend 👊🏻
Thanks for saving me some whiskey money!
Yessir!
Glad I could help!
Thank you my friend 👊🏻
Hahaha. You tell ‘em, Tim!
Shots fired!
Thank you my friend 👊🏻
Benchmade is no longer a competitive brand.
What that means is their products are fine, but their prices to not align with the market.
Hogue, Microtech, Spyderco, and Protech all make better USA alternatives to the entire Benchmade catalog at better prices.
Couldn’t agree more!
Thank you my friend 👊🏻
Benchmade is absolutely still competitive and very popular
@@rommelthedesertfox3089 To many uninformed people, yes.
For almost half the cost I could get a delica and be happier than a pig in sheyit
Thank you my friend 👊🏻
But do you really love it. 😂😅. Spot on review 👌 😊
It’s secretly my favorite knife ever 🤣
Thank you my friend 👊🏻
How dare you....JK. I like the Bugout, but I have the SMKW Exclusive Benchmade Bugout in CPM M4 with G10 scales. I agree on the price though.
That’s better then.
Thank you my friend 👊🏻
Agreed, I have one, I would not buy another. Benchmade themselves have much better offerings for similar cost.
Thank you my friend 👊🏻
indeed
Hear hear!
Thank you my friend 👊🏻
Ive never had the desire to get one. Just a bunch of hype. I dont like plastic scales.
Same!
Thank you my friend 👊🏻
Boring, overpriced, and too small for my hands. I’ll stick with my PM2…it wasn’t cheap but it’s built better.
Agreed on all points!
It just feels and looks like an Amazon knife… but not at an Amazon price.
I’ve got far better Ganzo knives and that’s no exaggeration.
To each his own I suppose.

You right my man. Way overrated Too expensive
