  • This was a short trip to Nuneaton where we kick things off with a cracking tone from a 66 freightliner. Other tones are given by royal mail and virgin trains. Cross Country, london midland are seen.

Lots of changes here at Nuneaton since I lived there in the mid 60s. Another good selection. Another quite big station where not many trains seem to stop.

It was my first time at Nuneaton. Really glad I came here. It's a great station to come to because of the various traffic that passes through

If that was 4L92 (Freightliner with the tones) then it was 66516. I was working it that Friday 23/5/14 from Basford Hall to Wembley. I normally give random blasts of the horn if someone's recording and I see them in time...lol. Great vid mate, just a shame about the typical British weather. :D

Thanks ever so much for getting in touch and watching :) the tone you gave was simply brilliant. I really wasn't expecting it :) The British weather just makes the day that much enjoyable lol. Hopefully I will see you again at another station.

I'm up and down the WCML most days so dare say I'll pass you at some point. You caught me in your Hemel vid. I was working 4M93 to Lawley st (70019) but was more concerned with following pegs behind the other 70

Nathe Derry yeah I remember that. You weren't to far behind that previous 70 but it was an enjoyable day non the less. I saw a lot of 70's passing me that day. My personal favourite are the 66's. Hopefully on my next visit to the WCML ill see plenty more freight and with any luck yourself on another working. Have some safe journeys

Great video, genuinely, its nice to have some narration while watching. I dont often watch videos like this so when I do it's so nice to have some dialogue :)
I was wondering something about the first (commuter) train (@0:15), I've wondered this for some time actually, perhaps you will know. There is a loud alert sound playing from both the front and rear of the train. Is this a warning sound for safety or is it something to do with the operation of the train?

I'm really glad to hear that you enjoyed watching this. The train in question is a class 350 built by Siemens. The noise you hear is generated when the train is accelerating and decelerating. They all make this noise, as to why they do I'm not completely sure

+Tornado922 It's a Gate Turn Off Thyristor. Don't take this as gospel because I'm no expert but in the most basic terms it's a semiconductor which handles the juice going into the traction motors. A semiconductor only allows AC power through a circuit in one direction at a time. The noise you can hear is it being turned on and off very quickly at varying frequencies as the power needs of the unit change during acceleration and deceleration.
It's a noise which will probably disappear from the railway one day as more modern technology allows for higher frequencies of switching which are out of the human hearing spectrum. I think it's already evident with the clear difference in the lower frequency of sound of made by a 90s EMU like a class 323 pulling away compared to something newer like the 350 which is much higher in pitch.

RandomNameHere ah right ok, that does make a lot of sense. I wouldn't have known that to be completely honest, I had my suspicions it was to do with the traction motors.

***** I don't think it was ever going to take shape. They trialed a 390 running from Newcastle to Kings Cross. Although from what I understand a few open access operators want to use 'Baby Pendolinos' on the ECML
