Starting off in '63 everything was based around the rhythm and hook lines/themes. My love for music and guitar started with Buddy Holly, and the Everly Bros, hooked me on harmony! The Beach Boys led me right to loving the Beatles guitar stuff and how Brian Jones and Keith created those entertwined guitar parts. It'll be 57 years in August and hasn't really slowed down ANY! LOL I enjoy these garage sessions immensely! Thanks and keep doing 'em!
Leo is awesome. Ha! My 3yr. old granddaughter frequently joins me quarantine jammin in the man cave. She likes drums and keys. The most Important thing of being a good guitar player is to make sure you spend times with loved ones. My mom told me when she bought me those 1st 2 Zep albums in late ‘69, she didn’t see me until 1970. I could live in the cave.
Went back and re-watched some of these old ones. It struck me while you were talking about playing rhythm guitar, and how if felt when my old corporate band really locked into a groove. When you look out at the heads bobbing or people dancing, nobody's doing it to the guitar solo. That feeling when you're connected with your bandmates, and the band is connected with the audience. That's what makes it fun.
When you're playing out of your mind, then realize you just realized it. But then a professional can get it back, just like that, and keep goin'. Awesome.

Too cute! After playing guitar for years, and learning some patterns of scales. I’m slowing down and learning the scales. By ear. Figuring them out as I go. Small breakthrough the other day, thinking’s about the numbers (intervals) rather than the specific note. I was really good in Math class, and really bad in English. There’s more than one way to skin a cat! Hearing you play through the chord tones with the intervals was inspiring. Hope to learn my instrument a little better today than I did yesterday. Peace

I've been sliding around with maj and min 3rds for a long time, but for some reason, I never thought to do it the same way with 4ths and 5ths. Playing "inside harmony" diatonically with the 3rd intervals always made sense to me because I could follow the "family of chords" (e.g. I ii iii IV IV vi vii) to know when to play a major or minor interval--plus it just sounded right. But when I tried to follow Tom's lead and do it with 4th and 5th intervals, I heard some stuff that wasn't diatonic. For 4ths you can play perfect 4ths on every note of the scale but the 7th degree (e.g. in C maj, B's perfect 5th is F#). For 5ths you can play perfect 5ths on every note but the 4th degree (e.g. in C maj, F's perfect 4th is A#). However, if you stick to the major pentatonic scale, you are skipping the 4th and 7th note so it is safe to slide around between 4ths and 5ths all day. Of course, the best part about knowing "rules" is when to break them, but being able to stay diatonic will always sound good. Anyway, thought I'd share one way to look at this. Now back to practice.

Two favorite, under appreciated rhythm players: John Lennon and Elvis. A lot of guitar players end up with bad time since rock n roll, for all it's good, made the electric guitar more of a lead instrument like a Sax but it's so much more than that. Listening to Chet and the older cats who played as lead/rhythm, accompaniment, taught me a lot about the instruments possibilities. That's why I love these lessons, all this info is gold

New guitar needs some love as I have not played it in months - turned out to be a great thing. There is some super important stuff in this video intervals and fretboard navigation, on the rhythm stuff tommy emmanuel says get competent with it because it's the foundation of guitar playing and music in general. IMHO when I have had lessons from session player like tom you learn more in 10 mins than 10 years with others.

Thanks again Tom. I just learned a couple things about the guitar, and a huge lesson. How to deal with the kids when they walk in on the jam. Sometimes it feels like an interruption, but they are listening and picking it up. The other night my 4 year old daughter came in and played perfect pitch piano while I just played rhythm for her. Best jam in a while for me.

I’m glad you said it, showing off isn’t a skill... I always looked at bass as easy and boring, that is until I tried it, that’s when I discovered I have zero talent. keeping that background rhythm is the foundation, nothing works without it. Love to see guys playing in the groove... Lead is only fun when guys are laying down that rhythm for you, especially when they are listening and adjusting tempo to keep you supported. It’s difficult to give the respect due unless you’ve been there...

Read a J. Hendrix interview 40 yrs ago. Being in a 3 piece band he was asked " Do you consider yourself a lead or rythm guitar player" .His response" You can't be a lead player without being a rythm player" He was a fantastic rythmn player before his solo career.

Thanks again Tom. I just learned a couple things about the guitar, and a huge lesson. How to deal with the kids when they walk in on the jam. Sometimes it feels like an interruption, but they are listening and picking it up. The other night my 4 year old daughter came in and played perfect pitch piano while I just played rhythm for her. Best jam in a while for me.

I’m glad you said it, showing off isn’t a skill... I always looked at bass as easy and boring, that is until I tried it, that’s when I discovered I have zero talent. keeping that background rhythm is the foundation, nothing works without it. Love to see guys playing in the groove... Lead is only fun when guys are laying down that rhythm for you, especially when they are listening and adjusting tempo to keep you supported. It’s difficult to give the respect due unless you’ve been there...

Read a J. Hendrix interview 40 yrs ago. Being in a 3 piece band he was asked " Do you consider yourself a lead or rythm guitar player" .His response" You can't be a lead player without being a rythm player" He was a fantastic rythmn player before his solo career.
