Welcome Carolyn! Love BC - only been there once but it was very memorable. This video was one of my very first so is a bit rough and ready - but I hope you got some use out of it. I've other videos on Dendrobium nobiles that might be a little more 'polished'!
Another great video. Lip test I never heard before and great method to test. Your conditions I feel in Wigan are very similar to me in Northern Ireland.

Beautiful blooms on your Nobile. Does your feed contain calcium. The plant will survive for a while with out it but will eventually start to decline unless your tap water has calcium in it. (Assuming you use tap water to water the plants with). Made a huge difference for me when I started to give calcium! Thanks to Ricks instruction! ❤️
Yes I do use calcium - also from Rick's guidance. I use rainwater so no issue there. Although I have some thoughts of my own on feeding which I'll share at some stage. Highly likely these thoughts will develop as I learn more, so I really must make some time to dig into the info out there! If only I didn't have to work too...:)

I have two nobile types, both were sale plants from the garden centre so I haven't seen them yet but both were named varieties so I know what they are supposed to look like. I occasionally have bush snails, usually when I am using moss. Not quite sure why. Thanks for sharing.
Bush snails sound like they would be the size of a dinner plate! Yikes!
Tiny little things, fortunately they don't like my inorganic media, my copper tape or the bleach solution I use on my floor. I usually catch them trying to escape.
The best way to get rid of unwanted pests (bush snails included) in media is hydrogen peroxide 3%. Spray it liberally on the roots and the moss and wait until it finishes the fizzing sound. It kills the eggs as well as the snail and all that will be left after that is water, so no need to dry the plant, unless you've sprayed in the crown, in which case use some kitchen towel to absorb the water. Make sure you only use 3% as higher percentage can damage the roots and lower percentage doesn't work. Loved your dendrobium, I think it is a Comet King Akatsuki

Those could be dead roots caused by slugs or snails chewing them off. When you flush with water out they come. A repot might be in order, maybe after blooming😀

I find that the mobiles we buy in the handy dandy stores, are out of our season at times... forced into blooming in perfect environment and then on to the shelves. Mine has had a small blooming in spring this year, but no new growths all summer. Last year it threw out keikis which I potted into the same pot... so, now I wait and see when it decides to get moving 😬 so far, nada. Is yours fragrant?
It's mildly fragrant but nothing worth seeking out to stick your nose into. :)

Thanks for a nice summary. I grow that exact nobile, and a pure white one (var. virginalis, I think) at 33 degrees South, in Cape Town, where we have a Mediterranean climate, and temperatures between 33 or so Celsius (hottest), and 5-6 degrees (coldest). Mine are outside in filtered light under a tree and seem to thrive. Do you have a varietal name for the pink flowered nobile? I don't know one, if there is one! Thanks again.

Do you need to keep dendrbium in see through pot?
No, transparent pots don't help any orchids - they're solely to enable you to see what's going on inside the pot regarding root growth. Orchids are very prone to root rot - especially in a non-tropical climate. By using a transparent pot, you can easily check if the media is still wet or has dried out, enabling you to adjust your watering accordingly.
Sausage shaped dropping would make me think of rodents, but not underneath a pot 🤔 another culprit is caterpillars, but you didn’t see anything in the pot 🤔 and those must be huge caterpillars to leave those kinds of droppings 😬 let us know if you find out what it is

When the flowers dry up and start to drop, do I need to do anything or just let them drop, rather than trim to tidy it up?
