Surely interesting aspect of the British culture! When I think about it, I have in mind my marvellous trip in London where I felt like in paradise. As you know, because I'm vegan I saw any corner of the city with vegan and healthy option so I tend to associate the British culture to it. With this video I will have to reckon differently. I have to say that fish and chips is not my cup of tea, but still a fascinating aspect of your culture. Thank you Anna ❤

While cod and haddock are the most commonly used fishes, I have also ordered plaice or flounder with chips. It was in Cornwall many years ago though.

An amazing episode Anna! The subject was obviously obvious when it comes to British culture and you've done a wonderful job of putting it all together in all of its aspects and 'à toutes les sauces', if I may say so... adding your own personal experience. I love the sound of 'fish & chips shops' by itself ! It somewhat chimes as good as it is tasty! I loved your "So I'd take home my fish & chip supper from my chip shop job!" 👂👌(these beautiful alliterations fall within the scope of poetry!) I also liked the engrossing historical part about WW2 explaining how it became so popular though being at the base a 'mean of survival' as well as the anecdote of the seagulls which is not without reminding me of the scary attack in Alfred Hitchcock's 'The Birds' ;-)
Having become a veggie as well, I personally love pudding but as a pastry.
Chips with salt and vinegar is yummy. Regarding fried sausages, maybe you've heard of the 'fricadelles' popular in Belgium. They are evoked in 'Bienvenue chez les ch'ti' (film about my region very close to Belgium). Nobody really knows what they are made of 😂but all agree this is scrumptious. Note, by the way that Belgian chips (French fries) are probably unmatched in the world just as their trappist beers.
They are sold in popular stationary vans/caravans/trucks (we call 'Baraques à frites' in Northern France) and that you can find everywhere in the country and with diverse acompaniments and sauces (wide-spread in France too).
More white fish in addition to cod, haddock and hake: Halibut, flounder, sole, salmon, mackerel, herring are a few coming to my mind.
On that note, more sadly and regarding environment, I would recall perhaps that humankind kills around 1 Trillion fish per year!! (which represents 1 thousand billions!!!) You read well and that is truly and awfully unfathomable and a real disaster as we are currently emptying the oceans meaning that we take off the oceans way more than Nature can re-generate! In addition but I won't develop more, most fish reeled in by these factory ships, die in horrible conditions. For the terrestrial animals, the number oscillates between 100 and 150 Billions (!!!) animals appallingly slaughtered each single year (!) mainly for food ... Just a thought and encouragement to everyone to become a veggie! ;-)
I enjoyed the podcast very much Anna. How I love the British accent and your voice and 'schwa'; the way you speak fast sometimes and then slow down on the important parts and making the most of these loooong vowels I adore ...
Thank you so much Anna, that was really captivating and also, I have to admit ... mouth-watering indeed!
Merci ! You are inspiring. I send you much love my lovely, bisous bisous 😘🌹💞 ❤
