I've seen over 5,000 movies over the past almost 50 years, from all over the world from the early silent era to the present. It gets harder and harder to impress me, but I just saw this film today and I was pleasantly surprised. What an incredible directorial debut by Kevin Bacon, score by his brother, story, cinematography, setting and, without a doubt, the acting of Helen Mirren and Kyra Sedgwick. So much "truth" and humanity communicated without words, sometimes just a look. All cinematic aspects worked well together.
@@E-Kat Because when I was 24, I went through Leonard Maltin's book on movies and spent 2 weeks check-marking every film I had seen at that time, then spent another week making a list of films his book recommended I see. A must watch. Hellen Mirren & Kyra Sedgwick, two of my favorite actors really did a fabulous job with this movie. Rather deep … don’t think I would of appreciated it as much as I did now when it first came out. Best movie I have watched in a long time

What an unexpected surprise to become engrossed in this compelling movie. Storytelling at its finest. And great acting by both Helen Mirren and Kyra Sedgwic.
Our parents can really mess us up from an early age. The key is to do our best to understand them and what influences they had too. This was an unexpected gem and left me wishing Elizabeth had gone back. But that would have complicated things too much for the boys.
Helen Mirren. Such an actress. I feel that a good actor actress is he she that looses her himself in their character so well they become whom they are interpreting. Helen to me is the best actress. So many other actresses are themselves and seldom become the character they are interpreting. They act superbly but only Helen embodies every aspect and soul of the character she plays. ❤
Brilliant movie! So intense, profound and thematically pertinent! Congrats to Kevin Bacon ❤ Congrats to the great Dame Helen Mirren ❤️ Congrats to all the performers❤️
One needed a mother that has never had, the other needed understanding and freedom from the narrowed society and daily routine, a husband needed a loving wife, and children needed firm and solid grounds at home with both parents loving and understanding each other. But above all that every one of them needs God to find themselves, to bring their broken hearts together, to fill up all their needs, heal the wounds so they can find peace to be able to live, cherish and grow.
BeEs that’s ridiculous,no one needs a fake cowardly deity to find themselves or anything else, besides the Christian goD has yet to be proven to exist SO no one is broken or can’t grow

Enemies becoming "friends". Strange but beautiful movie. Had so many things bout life, so many emotions. What a gorgeous setting. Would love a summr home ther. Mirren her usual delightful self but really impressed with Sedgwick. She was surprisingly.....fantastic. Really enjoyable flick.❤
I don't think so. I think it is more about wanting to feel alive. For many of us, that is not going backwards to our youth. When I was in my 20s I was in, and out of psych. wards, barely alive. I did the hard yards with therapy, and now I am more alive, and life is richer, the older and more experience I get. Even though I am physically sicker. I know many people who enjoy being themselves, and therefore their quality of life, more in their maturity. 😊
Why did he bring a young, beautiful "helper" in his house without his wife's input? He's been treating his wife like a child or a nut cake all along . That's why she had a nervous breakdown in the first place. He is condescending and the oldest son is following his example and is equally cruel to his mother.. Coupled with how he refers to his wife with Elizabeth. As if Elizabeth is his wife. No wonder his wife is angry. Who wouldn't be? Him leaving was the best thing for her sanity, Thank goodness she was able to regain her well-being.
Beautiful, and elagantly crafted from a mental health and a coming out point of view. Not a happy ending, but as Chase said ".. She was one hellova storm... And there will be others". Graciously "resolved" but so much unexplored
Covet Kyra's mouth and Adirondack chair...but seriously Amazing movie, great writing, acting and direction. Helen is a given and Kevin and Kyra a match made in heaven.

What a real showing what a depressed individual goes thru. And results when there’s emotional support. Depression affects millions differently. Some depressions r severe ultimately end in suicide.( I suffer from this and long o be gone o stop malignant thoughts).
That is one of the most unusually worded comments I have read. 😊 Maybe it is American phraseology that I am unfamiliar with. I think you are suggesting that people can get lust and love confused sometimes, and you would prefer if they didn't. I would add that often with romantic love, there is lust with love for the loved one as a whole person, including their whole physical manifestation, not just 'privates'. But it is O.K., you don't have to be responsible for others' intimacy choices. 😊 We all have our own lives to figure these things out for ourselves. As with the characters in this film figuring out their various forms of love, and how it changes as people grow and change. It makes sense that a person would open their heart and fall in love with someone who helped them heal, feel comfortable and appreciated being more of their authentic self, and feel alive again, as in this film. 😊
He cared about his reputation more than his wife, which was why, although caring, he was also controlling and stiflingly. That is why his wife did not have the space to breathe and find her own life again, that she lost being his wife in that society. She fell in love with a woman who didn't patronise her, and gave her the freedom and acceptance of her authentic self, that her husband, being too concerned about his reputation, and 'normality' could not do. He treated his wife like a child, and did not respect her autonomy and womanhood. I didn't perceive that aspect of his behaviour, caring, or allowing her the empowerment she needed to find her quality of life again.
DSYFUNCTIONAL FAMILIES Fathers and Sons (Russian), also translated more literally as Fathers and Children, an 1862 novel by Ivan Turgenev, shows how dysfunctional parents are the products of their own dysfunctional parents, and they in turn produce dysfunctional children. Dysfunctional families and childhood development trauma are inter-generational afflictions that repeat a pathological cycle that continues until someone becomes aware of their situation and breaks out of it. Every person experiences childhood development trauma to some degree.
