I knew you could do data transfer with serial, but never thought you could do a Boot over serial! Thanks for showing us that !

You bet, glad to do it! When I learned about it, I figured it was worth documenting!

The 1st XT class machine I added to my collection was a floppy only system where the floppies didn't work. The machine also wouldn't boot from a CF card prepped in another machine. Being able to boot via serial using the XTIDE was a life saver. It allowed me to boot up and troubleshoot the issue. It was a failed 74 series logic chip connected to the track0 line on the floppy controller. After replacing the chip, thankfully it was socketed, I could boot from a floppy and setup the CF card in the machine itself.

Awesome! Always wondered how this worked.
I'm even more blown away you could load the XT-IDE bios into a VirtualBox VM. Never knew you could do that.

Yea, this was fun to figure out! And, yea, VirtualBox does pretty good with BIOS option ROMs!

It'd be cool if you could use a parallel port: 800kbps

At present I don't think that is supported in XTIDE BIOS but I agree that it would be cool!!
