Thanks to @TurboReiji for the footage: • The Crew [FULL GAME]
There's an ongoing debates about whether or not we're in a good period for gaming right now. And personally I am of the opinion that I think on average gaming is better than it's ever been. Because on one hand, we have access to all of gaming history up until now, whether legally or questionably legally, and on the other hand, we have more gaming variety than ever thanks to Indie gaming and to a certain extent even modern Triple A gaming especially compared to the era where everything was for example Uncharted or call of duty. But there are people out there who do believe that gaming is worse off now than it's ever been, and everyone has their own personal reasons for this. I won't go into the majority of that because a lot of it is just meaningless buzzwords. But there are definitely issues with the modern industry, And one issue in particular that does not get talked up enough is something that is downright destructive to the history of gaming and could get a whole lot worse in the future. Simply put, games dying.

Here's a quotes about why Physical Media is important:
"And in the case of 'Oppenheimer,' we put a lot of care and attention into the Blu-Ray version… and trying to translate the photography and the sound, putting that into the digital realm with a version you can buy and own at home and put on a shelf so no evil streaming service can come steal it from you." -Christopher Nolan

The cool thing is, DQ X isnt even offline.
It still gets updates and those updates get ported over the offline version. They just made a more accessable offline game that plays more like a traditional DQ game and onboard more people to the live version.
You can even import your offline save to start the online version at lvl 70 and other bonuses.
If the game ever goes offline, the work is pretty much already done and you could still experience the story, world, characters, etc. on the dev/artists' terms with the offline version.
Now if only they would officially localize it...

Even then the people who pretend like every AAA game is broken and unplayable just want to be angry and toxic. Broken, rushed and unfinished games have been a thing since the Atari 2600. Bad games have always existed but there's more games being made than ever before so there will be more bad games.
I'm old. I've been gaming since the NES and I will say modern day gamers are spoiled. They think a 7/10 game is "Dogshit" when a majority of games throughout time have been 7/10 games but we only remember the good games or the ones we grew up with. There's so many choices these days.

If purchasing isn't owning, then piracy isn't theft. Companies will fuel piracy with their terrible practices. DRM is already one force that compels people to pirate.

I always thought that laws in the videogame aspect should be revisited.
Like I think they should make that if a game release over a decade ago isn't available to be purchased (at least digitally) and be played on current hardware it should be legal to be pirated since the company isn't getting any sales anyway and show no interest either. However if they want that piece of cake, they would have to put actual effort on it and made the game available.
On this matter, I think if a company made a game with obligatory connection to their servers to be play, they should be prohibited to close the servers and/or take the game down.
That way they think twice before taking that decision and we win as we would see better online only/live service games since they would try to actually release good games and not to maintain the servers of a bad game that isn't giving them any sales

I mean there is a category for it, abandonware. There are plenty of websites (at least for PC games) that host downloads to abandonware and a majority of the time the files are not removed. Yeah, it's a grey area but I think as long as the rights holders aren't trying to remove it it's fine to download and play.
However these are all mostly older titles.

A key point of preservation is availability, which is why I say physical is always better for it. You can back up a game yourself if you physically own it, but digital stores have games pulled all the time.
I went to CeX last year and bought Outrun 2 on Xbox for £10 after it was pulled from digital stores, ripped it to my SSD and now I can emulate it any time I want.
I went to buy Daytona USA and the only options now are Saturn, Dreamcast or PC CD. All digital versions are gone.
There should be some kind of mandate for a physical version of games as well as digital, otherwise countless media will be lost to time.

    • @BlueEyedVibeChecker
      @BlueEyedVibeChecker 5 місяців тому +1

People have fallen for the "physical bad" push from the big corporations who want absolute control over what you consume and when, they talk of "data rot" but I have SEGA CD games going on 30+ years old, ripping just fine to my SSD, some I picked up recently, yet those same games on digital stores are gone.
You can still buy a UMD PSP game, you can't however buy ANY of the thousands of digital PSP games legally anymore.
Digital is convenient, but that's the ONLY benefit to it. Licenses expired? Gone. Publisher wants to delist it to push sales of the new GTA downgrade edition? Gone. Want to buy /rebuy a game years later? Tough.

Always online games helping to prevent piracy is a fabricated narrative these companies want you to believe. It's the only halfway decent leg for them to stand on, but falls apart like a house of cards when you realize that a lot of people wouldn't bother buying the game at all if it's always-online in the first place. So what sales you would've lost through piracy, you just end up losing through people being completely uninterested with supporting an insidious and overly controlling business practice like that.

💥💥In my opinion gaming has been trash after 2012.
You said there's more variety. I don't get what you talking about there. We don't have any boxing games we don't have variety for sports. It just one NFL game no college football or basketball games and one NBA basketball game now.
Now it's just one NHL game. Back in the 2000s and '90s you had way more variety and choices and each genre.
If you didn't like Madden you can play NFL game day, quarterback club, NFL fever, NFL 2K. Tecmo bowl, joe Montana sports talk,
We had tones of college basketball games and college football games. Happy even had arena football games in the 2000s.
If You didn't like NBA live, you could play NBA action, NBA shootout, NBA showdown, NBA streets, NBA ballers, NBA 2K and it was other NBA games and baseball games.
Same thing with hockey and basketball
The variety in racing games back in the '90s and especially the 2000s was way more deeper. Gran Turismo you had Colin McRae rally you had other rally games. Project Gotham racing , Forza started coming out with their games. you had to test drive series, driver, burnout, blur, split second, need for speeds games, midnight clubs and many more.
The amount of adventure games that you had back in the 90s and 2000s it was so many of them.
    I don't think there's enough variety now.

Hello there, don't know if it's relevant with this video per se but I must get something off my shoulders.
There was a video game developer company named Surreal Software which made 2 games named "Drakan" where you ride a flying dragon in a semi-open world.
Both games didn't perform good enough financially so the developers abandoned this franchise and moved on to other projects instead and partnered with Midway.
Problem is that in 2011 they both closed down after bankruptcy and Surreal Software got absorbed into Monolith Productions which is owned by Warner Bros.
Granted I could be misremembering but the "Drakan" IP lies in purgatory between Sony and Warner Bros, with both games considered sadly abandonware.
So this means people can only preserve and play them by illegally downloading them from the Internet (both "Drakan" games are sadly very hard to acquire).
Warner Bros and Sony aren't doing anything with this IP, either putting them on websites like Steam or trying to revive the series with remakes and/or sequels.
Really want a "Drakan 3" game being officially made then released, and so I don't know if this movement/petition of yours will help me of achieving my dream.

Good video, but the term "enshittification" would have added a lot to this. The publishers are not selling games, but licenses to a thingl. This applies to streaming services or anything short of physical media. By far the best way to stop this practice, of publishers abusing their audience, is to not support, at any level, the live services or games where publishers can't be bothered to keep games going, which needs collectivization from gamers.

This is why I'm still baffled why Ubisoft decided to make Just Dance Next an online game. Sure, you can 40 download songs but now you own 2 editions with each having 40 songs. I still pretty much like the game but the fact that the game is online only, the bugs and glitches, and the amount of songs in Just Dance +, and the possibility of this game being removed and unplayable when the servers shut down makes me think the top heads at Ubisoft doesn't care while the employees do seem to care making this game especially when I played the game but sadly they (including the game's director) had to follow the top head's decisions.

You should be able to own a game even if it's a digital License.
Mortal Kombat 9 got delisted from Steam a couple years ago but, that doesn't stop me from opening up Steam and Downloading MK9 and playing it because I own that game
NRS didn't pull a Ubisoft and stopped us from downloading it

but, with MK 11, as soon as the servers shut down, then almost all the "content" is lost forever because the Krypt and the Story Rewards and customization are online only

I think the 3rd reason for shutting the game down is server costs, why waste the money to keep the servers up. Instead we shut down one game save money there, funnel players to the other game and make money there. Or the worst Ubisoft shutdowns crew 2 in a years time and then shortly after announces crew 3 and releases it at $70 with micro transactions, pre order early access at a higher price and a season pass.

  • @Tmaget
    @Tmaget 5 місяців тому

This kind of problem is one where i don't think there really is a good solution. It affects indie and AAA games the same because running a server isn't free. Until a new way to run, fund, or circumvent, the server costs are found this just the reality.

Can you play the crew? Why not? Then I guess, it's not always online is it? Always online is a bait and switch and no company is allowed to do it

    • @danielsala81
      @danielsala81 5 місяців тому

you can not play the crew anymore (not on pc anyway), the game is inactive on Ubisoft Connect, you can't even install it (no option). People who installed it can still launch it, but it will be a demo, not a full game.

I think what needs to happen is games stop being released exclusively on servers, servers take up a lot of physical and digital space often required entire rooms just to store and that space can fill up far too quickly if they release all games on these servers thus more games have to be "killed" just to make room for newer games that take up even more space, that constant reshuffling of server space probably isn't healthy for the servers and probably would light them on fire

Also for anybody who hasn't checked out Ross' channel his Game Dungeon series is really entertaining. One of those channels that when you find it you binge all his videos.
