I knew Earl. He was a kind, thoughtful and hard working man. He was always polite and genuinely interested in the well being of his friends and neighbors. If you asked him about being the first black NBA player to play in a game he'd likely say that he was the first player to play in the NBA from his hometown, family or school. Color was not an issue for Earl but success, integrity and performance as a person and player were very important. Earl wasn't a subject for 'black' history. He was a participant in human history. He was a gentleman.
And really, black men took over the sport of basketball shortly after. There were still plenty of white players in the 60s, 70s, and 80s, but the first basketball superstars were Wilt Chamberlain and Bill Russell, and by the time the 70s and 80s rolled around, white players were becoming less and less common, by the 90s for sure,.
He WAS the 1st officially recognized by all. There was a black player in the 1870's but you know the problems THAT presented (Ken Burn's mentioned this players name and the whole scenario in his doc "Baseball". And there were dark skinned Cubans in the 1920's/30's but again...problems. And again Burn's mentions this too, in his "Baseball" doc.)
