    thanks for posting these tutorials. the Orioles series was the whole reason i bought OOTP for the first time this year. i know i've commented a few times on your videos, but all of them have been really helpful to me. one thing that i have found when deciding when to move players up is the "Ratings Relative to..." box, especially with drafted players. it helps me decide where to put them for their first year or when it may be time to call up other players during/after the season, along with their stats.

      @@pfholden what do you do about star players who want huge deals? ex: Realmuto wants 45 mil a year for 8 years. Feels like doing it is a suicidal deal for trying to fill out the team, but also its an objective from the owner to resign him. Thanks in advance!

      Peter,
      it's really hard to say for sure without knowing all of the context of s budget, your minor league depth, other players due for raises soon etc. But, in as vacuum, $45 mil per year is pretty crazy. I doubt he'll sign for that much. But he's also one of the best catchers in baseball, so maybe worth trying to sign him to an expensive, but less unreasonable deal. And, if you're playing as the Phillies, they do have a huge budget, so...

    Hey mate, love these videos. Really helpful for new players. I had wondered, would you ever consider doing a video on 'How to evaluate your team/where to improve' for example maybe simming to the trade deadline with a couple of different teams (to show budget differences etc) then analysing whats working for them and whats not and how to plug those gaps either via trades or looking in their minor leagues etc.
    Only reason i ask is that i feel like a lot of the analysis is dependant on context, for example if a team is winning/losing, has money/lacks money etc and it would be cool to see your approach to those!
    I find that my player for player analysis has improved over time but sometimes my team look like we're doing okay via our team stats in relation to the rest of the league, however we still end up with a bad record.

    As always great video been following for few months. Today's question is about the minor league farm system teams. In the video you mentioned you have 2 teams at each level up to A ball. Can you elaborate more on the strategy here? Is it to move more prospect s thru the funnel, or to have teams split between coaching like power and finesse pitching?

    • @pfholden

      Yeah it’s so I have enough teams for my young prospects so I don’t have to cut bait too early due to overcrowded rosters. I don’t really pay too much attention to the type of coach or specialty, just that they are good coaches.

    • @pfholden
      @pfholden  3 роки тому +2

      Hey Stephen,
      It really depends on how you want to play the game. I've had sims where I sim 2-4 weeks at a time but I generally sim one day at a time. The main reason is, as GM, I like to make sure my bullpen has enough fresh arms for each game. If my bullpen is tired, I'll swap a guy to AAA for a fresh arm. Waivers is not another thing you may want to check daily.
      And yeah, for minor leagues, I do mass promotions like twice per year (halfway point and before the start of season) but keep an eye on the teams ervery 2-4 weeks.

    I have been playing the game for 3 weeks, your videos have really help me. I just have been struggling at one thing, my rookies just seem to not work well in the majors, what's the difference between a rough rookie season and a player that's not ready for mlb yet? I only call up players that are tearing up AAA.

    • @pfholden
      @pfholden  3 роки тому +1

      Hey John,
      Glad the videos have been helpful. It really could be any number of things with why your rookies are struggling. It does take a lot of guys some time to adjust to the majors. And guys sometimes have bad years, just like in real life. Your coaching or team chemistry could also be a factor. And how much slack you give a guy before sending him back down depends on if you're trying to win or rebuilding and who your replacements are.
      I know that's not a very direct answer, but there could be a lot of reasons why your guys are struggling, and it likely isn't just one thing.

    • @pfholden
      @pfholden  3 роки тому +2

      The coaching system is one of the weak spots in the game and I don't have advice I'd put much stock in. Many people say don't pay attention to reputation, look at development and relationships. The relationships are definitely important, you don't want a manager who has bad relationship with most of your players. I've yet to notice much of an impact from development. To be honest, I pay some attention to reputation, even though it's actual impact may be null, relationships, and track record.

    Hi, great videos, making life easy on everyone, thanks :)
    I have some issues in deciding what to do with players on AZL, DSL and Rookie levels. It first seemed to me that these are all the same levels but I thing DSL for example refers to a league in Dominican Republic. I am not sure when these leagues begin or if they have different levels of quality between them. I'd appreciate if you could shed some light on these as well :)

    • @pfholden
      @pfholden  3 роки тому +1

      Hey Erdem. Glad the videos have been helpful. In terms of the levels you mentioned, they are all rookie leagues, so there is generally no difference of quality between them. There may be small differences if, for example, teams have a stronger roster for their AZL team than their DSL. But in general, these levels are the same. Rookie ball seasons generally start in. mid-late June after the draft and run through the end of August.

    • @ErdemOzkanJazz
      @ErdemOzkanJazz 3 роки тому

      @@pfholden Thanks for the quick answer. So that means I should not be worried about the lack of total players throughout my rookie level teams because I'll be able to fill them with fresh drafted rookies come June... Good to know :)
      Would you say that there should be some vague age limits for every level when considering cutting / demoting / promoting players? For example a guy who is 24 should not be playing rookie level baseball anymore so I am trying to give him a chance in A - AA levels before deciding to cut him or not. Say, is 22 an upper limit for Rookie level and 24-25 for AA? Does that sound logical in Baseball terms?

    • @pfholden
      @pfholden  3 роки тому +1

      It will vary by player and it depends on when they were drafted. For example, I may have more patience with a 22 year old in rookie ball who was just drafted this year than a 22 year old there who was drafted at 18 and has been there for 4 years. It also depends on what my scout thinks their overall potential is. If a guy is struggling in rookie ball and old for the level, but my scout thinks highly of him, I'll have more patience with him than a guy who my scout thinks will never be good.
      Your age cutoff seems fine, maybe a little higher than I go in general. But those work as a guideline while keeping in mind there's no one rule to follow that fits every player.

    You may have said this in a previous tutorial video, but where do you place drafted players in their first year typically?

    • @pfholden
      @pfholden  3 роки тому +1

      Hey Anthony, I place almost everyone in rookie ball to start. If I've drafted an advanced college player, I may start them in low A or A, but I don't normally do that. But, I'll promote pretty aggressively from rookie ball for the guys who are clearly advanced. If a drafted player, especially college-aged, gets off to a hot start in rookie ball and my scout think the player has advanced skills, I'll promote after a few weeks. Generally, I like to have most of my college players to full-season A-ball the season after they are drafted, if not sooner.

      Cool, gotcha. I may do an update at some point but to be honest I haven’t found much that’s changed with this in 22 so this video should still be relevant.

    unless your owner wont let you control budget

    • @pfholden
      @pfholden  3 роки тому

      Not totally sure which part of the budget you're referring to, but player development, draft, and international free agent budgets should all be able to be controlled during the off-season. They are locked during the season and preseason.
      If some owners don't let you control those, I've yet to run into an owner like that.

      @@pfholden no my owner has the "interfering" personality trait so id have to go commissioner mode to gain access i guess. he wont let me make any fiscal decisions at all. its making me debate restarting again

      Ah okay. I've actually never played for an owner like that. That sounds annoying.

    How do I create a new baseball player??? There's literally no in-game option, no help, no tutorial, like, there can't be a button, Create New Player?? Why does this have to be so hard?? All I want to do, make a new baseball player for the orioles, add player to orioles, set picture, play ball. That's literally the O N L Y thing I want to do, and it doesn't exist.

      two options:
      1) go into commissioner mode, go to the transaction tab, on the right hand side click the "actions" drop down and select create fictional player.
      or
      2) go to manager options, click commissioner mode, then click on any player and click player editor. you can basically build a player from scratch based off any player in the game.

      @@pfholden Thank you, after doing a thorough google search, I did find it.
      The announcer voice is just text to voice then? Anyway to slow down announcer voice? Too bad it seems like there's no real mods available for the game. At least on steam, I can't find any mods for it, although I did see there are mods out there for older ootp versions on google search, but it looks to be far and few between.

      @@pfholden Well it's certainly no Al Michaels that's for sure. In the dos game, Hardball 5, graphics are okay, but everything that gets announced is by Al Michaels. It can sound weird at times because it's not a smooth flowing announcement, he just said a bunch of key words then those get mashed together into sentences.

    This is funny. In my game of OOTP 22 I am playing in 23 and Byron Buxton has like 46 homers just before the start of September. In your game Buxton had 8 homeruns in 23.
