For those asking about the differences between VNC and Raspberry Pi Connect (at least two of you), consider the scenario where the Pi is located inside your home network (behind your Internet router) and you attempt to access it from, say, an Internet cafe away from your home with a laptop.
VNC is just a remote display server, it doesn't really care from where you are connecting from, it just needs a route to be available to connect to it. With the scenario above, you'd need to either open a port on your router for port forwarding (and probably a Dynamic DNS address) or enable VPN so both the Pi and laptop appear to be on the same network. At that point you can use VNC between the two.
Raspberry Pi Connect acts as a middle-man and relay between you and the Pi. It sets up the connection to the Pi (I presume some kind of reverse tunnel) and then connects you to it when you connect to Connect with your laptop.
In other words, VNC is just a remote display server whereas Raspberry Pi Connect is a remote display server and a connection broker.
Loved the tetris game from terminal :)
Thanks for the new information Lee, now all I have to do is figure out what I am going to use Remote Pi for…😂!
Have a great day!
Can we use it in raspbian bullseye? im using a raspi 4 😢
Terminal Tetris is pretty dope
I enabled screenshare and connect on my pi5 and signed in. It shows up on the connect.raspberrypi website, but there is no 'Connect' button whatsoever. Not sure what I did wrong..
Could you please test your remote shell with midnight commander (sudo apt install mc), it seems that some things are not finished yet: eg. alignment, fonts, .... Thanks for the great video.
I often use .69 as a test address. I reserve this along with .123 in my subnets
There is no screen sharing showing, it's only connect button.
I am using rpi5 with rpios64bit kde-plasma desktop
@@Gilndrei it doesn’t support Kde plasmas window manager

@@leepspvideo Cool Thanks!!
My kde build is based on your kde build but (at least before this update) would not work with raspberry pi connect. It looks like your kde build is working. I wonder what I have messed up... I really am so pleased with the looks and feel that I don't want to go back to the Raspberry Pi Desktop. -- Your eldest subscriber.
With kde you need to change the Window manager. I was using Raspberry Pi OS
I think I talked about it here

@@leepspvideo I communicated poorly. My kde plasma build is using the kwin windows manager. If I change to Wayland Wayfire, things go squirrelly on me. That may not be a word. So, I suppose I am left out in the cold for now. Thanks for all the work you put into your videos.
does this mean i can retire vnc completely? or is there still a use-case for it?
See my comment above, that should help explain the use case.
Dude, i need that wallpaper 😂
I still have to wait a week before my RPi5 arrives (I had a RPi4 but the USB-C port melted for some reason), and i want to take advantage of RPi connect.

Possibly with Debian
Lee, is there a difference in privacy between this and VNC seeing that raspberry pi is now a public company and will have to conform to the ‘man’ sooner or later? I can use VNC without signing in.
Raspberry Pi may be a public company but it will still have to conform to the GPL and Open Source requirements in Raspberry Pi OS - there's no reason to believe that how they build and distribute the OS in future will change.
You can use VNC fine within your home network without any kind of sign in and without any great concerns (depending on who shares your home network). If you allow VNC to be accessed from outside on the Internet, then you should put a sign in (password) on VNC. You'd probably do it through a VPN connection first which would require you to authenticate before launching VNC anyway - so you have at least two levels of security protection.
