  • If you wanna skip to the gust wind it starts at 9:28
    It was supposed to be like glass this day but it ended up
    gusting to 25 miles an hour.
    Coast guard came to me twice that day to ask me if
    I am OK and what am I even doing there at this time.
    I prefer sailing when the winds are around 15 miles.
    So I risked my life for you guys would sure appreciate a LIKE on the video!
    Some of the items used for routing the sail.
    Spinlock Single Camcleat No Base. You can go with the one they have for 1/4" rope, but I went with the one size larger so the 1/4" rope goes trough easier.
    Harken Cam Cleat
    Harken Flairleads
    Harken Air® Single Block. For the rear where the pad eye is.
    2 Harken Carbo Air® Cheek Block
    1/4" Rope

    I didn't want to invest all that money for a sail, not knowing if I would enjoy it. So I picked up some galvanized conduit from the big box store that fit perfectly into the mount on the outback. I had a portable hammock made from parachute material that had just been sitting on a shelf in my garage, so I took that and a clear shower curtain that I picked up for $15. I cut out the dimensions of the sail and sewed the two together. So for less than $50 I had a great little sail. I did but the outriggers to give me more stability on those days when the wind was really kicking. Everything came out so good that when I was done there was no need to even consider buying the hobie $500 sail
    Wish I knew how to post a photo in here

      Nice if you are handy I am sure you can make it work. I also enjoy DIY projects but that's a bit too big of a project for me. I see also a lot of used for sale, still not as cheap as the one you made. Enjoy smooth sailing!

      I haven't felt the need for outriggers on the outback. Thank you for watching!

    Hi Nasko, great video thank you. I have a quick question. Does all the sails are standard for every single hobie kayak. I just bought a 201-2001 Hobie Mirage Outback, I want to know if I buy a second hand sail, will it fit in my kayak?

      Hey, yes the Hobie sail is universal and made to fit any Hobie any year. As long as your kayak has the hole for the sail mast it will fit.

    This is an awesome video! Is there anyway you could list the specific hardware and rope so that I can also do the same for my Hobie? Thank you

      I listed the items in the video description, if you search in the west marine site with those description I posted you should find them. I don't remember exactly the mm and sized of them. I went to west marine and picked about 10 feet of 1/4" rope in a color I liked and then picked up the items using the rope to see what and how big I would like them to be. Hope this helps and sorry if there is no west marine close to you

    What is the name of that locking gizmo with the automatic locking system that holds end of the rope for your sail ( you mentioned is pricy)? Where can I order one ?Thanks

      Hi, all parts I got from west marine, in the description I listed the parts

    Hey, you mentioned you used to sail a Revo - how was the stability? Did you have/use the ama kit? Thank you for taking the time to do the video.

    • @naskofilms4077
      @naskofilms4077  Рік тому

      Hi, the revo was super nice and fast but felt and was super unstable/tipsy especially in crosswind and in gusty conditions. If I kept it would have definitely bought the side amas so I can be more comfortable and enjoy it in high winds

    • @naskofilms4077
      @naskofilms4077  Рік тому

      I never used the amas, I now fish more and did not want the amas in the way of fishing lines. got the outback for the extra space and stability when sailing. If I wasn’t fishing would have definitely stayed with the revo 13 and amas. Hope this helps. let me know if you have any other questions

    Can you show a close up of your PVC pipe for wrapping the sail ..thank you

    • @naskofilms4077
      @naskofilms4077  Рік тому +1

      Hi, there is no option to add a picture of the pipe. Its very simple to make. A 11 inch 1 1/4 pvc with end cap on each side, I drilled 1 inch hole in both caps. Then make 2 holes for the rope to go trough, one is at the top and one hole 2 inch high from the bottom and just guide the sail line into the pipe/furler

    Not good to have to much sail out if you have lots of wind.

      Yea you are correct. I was trying to experiment what top speed was gonna hit with 25 mile winds but it just was too gusty and unpleasant to even sail. That day all the sail boats got out and the coast guard came twice to check on me. Consistent 15 mile winds seem to be the sweet spot for me and that sail
