Eunice is one of the funniest classic characters period. She's also one of the most tragic women characters too. When her husband ran off with the younger waitress, her older son ran off and never came back. Her youngest son went to prison and finally Mama died. She was all alone and it was like a Shakespearean tragedy. Excellent writing.

But she had naturally a cruel streak, and was my worst nightmare. I didn't have any idea what other children's parents who were good were like. It's been a learning experience.
I completely agree. I was a child when these first aired, and the meaning behind these sketches went right over my head at the time. But seeing them as an adult is heartbreaking, touching, and darkly funny.
These "The Family" sketches are pure gold. Most of us can relate in some form or another with bits and pieces . . . and feel good that even our own dysfunctional family isn't THIS bad. But, now - decades later - I also find they help me find empathy for others. For instance I was walking my dog (who is very well behaved) without a leash the other day in the park down the street . . . a lady confronted me in absolute rage: "Don't you know . . . . " Although I instinctively wanted to return the rage . . . I, instead thought . . . I don't know what sorta day this poor woman has had - or - what the hell she has to deal with in her day-to-day life. So . . . I smiled and said . . . "Ya know . . . You're right - have a nice day" and briskly walked on. We never know how many "Eunices" are out there doing their best dealing with life. Perhaps teetering on the edge. We need to be kind to one another.
Kindness is also keeping a dog on a leash. Your dog may be the sweetest most timid canine around, but that other person walking along has no idea about your dog. Just sees a dog without a leash and the person feels defenseless. So your leash also reassures others. I will not even take walks outside in my neighborhood anymore, because of running across unleashed dogs. Some loose, some with owners. Leash laws NEED to be respected.
Dion has a point. The other person may have been attacked by a dog, or witnessed an attack, & that leaves emotional scars. Just as an example. A few dogs are perfect, off-leash. A fair number aren't self-disciplined enough to be off-leash in public. Unfortunately, that effects the great people who have dogs. Wjich is just to say, if both parties have a little consideration, it can make things better. If you leash your dog for a bit, when asked, you may help someone get over their fear. That could be something to be proud of.
I know that first hand. Besides never receiving a hug, never being told "I love you" and watching my 2 other sisters get all the attention and all they wanted shopping (myself allowed only experiencing "window shopping", I stressed the most trying to get acceptance or even acknowledgement that my dreams were valuable. Some have dream parents, like a beautiful dream catcher, I had dream smasher parents. The finale was being tossed out of the house in to the street penniless because I had refused to eat red meat (or any animal flesh) or processed food that Mom cooked. I wanted to cook my own vegetable/rice diet (for better health). It's awful.
This was so excellent! It had me in tears of laughter and tears of sorrow for many of us whom have endured similar experiences. These characters are true to form in many of our lives. Great acting to the ten's!

In all the times I've seen the reruns, this was one I never saw. The chemistry Carol and Vicki had was truly magical and they just know how to tug the heart strings.
I’ve been watching a few of these and I feel really bad for Eunice. I mean she’s just as toxic as every other person of her environment, but at least she tries, she really tries to make things better for everyone and all of them just keep steppin’ on her. I couldn’t even take a single laugh during this one. I just really wish she could drop Mama at Ellen’s house with no announcement and run away out the town to never have to see them again. I really wish she could save herself, cause boy, this always leaves me feeling hopeless.
As Eunice would put it, nothing she ever does is good enough, whether it's her cleaning, cooking, or her "performance as a snowflake." She can jive with criticism for awhile, but getting constantly picked at causes her to lash out, and then the rest of the family feels re-justified in their criticism because they use her fits as an excuse.
This is so true to life that it can hurt. It’s also true to life that there are people, professionals and hope in God that get us above and beyond being hopeless. Like the counselor says, we have to help ourselves. One tiny step at a time, turns into miles as we go!❤️🙏Not easy but not impossible either. I always think it’s amazing that all the hero’s in the Bible aren’t the most handsome,or beautiful, strongest or smartest……the hero’s and heroines are the ones who started out one step at a time…….sometimes crying all the way…..but they made it!
I didn't like these sketches when I was a kid, due to being extremely sensitive and feeling all the characters were suffering. I never enjoyed watching dysfunctional families on sitcoms. Probably, mostly though, because it hit too close to home. As an adult, I can particularly appreciate this. It's brilliant.
Mama's Family was spun from this but was totally different. It was sweet and homey and funny. This was of course funny but made us look at ourselves and our pain as well. It was some of the best TV of that period. I didn't come from this type of home but you knew if was reality for many many people.
I've never seen these bittersweet episodes. Mama's Family reruns have beautiful memories for me...at 71. But I'd never watched one of these and was quite surprised by the heartaches portrayed in them. I will focus on my toes with great mindfulness when down , under, barely hanging on..🦋🕊
I wish Eunice could have broken what seems like an endless cycle of abuse. Mama's mother probably put her down so she raised her kids the same way. Eunice grew up and internalized that hatred. She never finished anything cause she didn't think she could cause she never got support from her family. It becomes a self fulfilling prophecy. "You'll never amount to nothing" because you're always told you are nothing. Thank you again LAtvFAN for uploading these clips I've never seen before. I never thought Eunice was so complex.
I just read this will be your last upload for The Family. I was just getting used to these daily uploads. Thanks again and hope we get more some day ♥️
The absolute brilliance of the writing and the taut, acrid performances of two truly dysfunctional relatives delivered here highlight this alternately hysterical and poignant segment of Eunice and Mama. Carol Burnett is a comedic legend, of course, but seeing the comedy growth of Vicki Lawrence over the years on the Burnett show is a real revelation. From her meek image as a shy kid sister type in the beginning to this scathing portrayal of Mama shows the daunting rise of her own comedy star that led to her own spin-off series. Brava all around!
Right. We all have dreams that didn't pan out. The trick is not to become a prisoner to them. Find something new that's within your grasp. Work for it, and treasure what you have, and *can* do successfully.
So often in these sketches reality hits home. While being hilarious -they speak truth to what members of the human family undergoes because of love for each other.
This sketch has to be one of the greatest episodes of sketch comedy on Television. The talent behind this episode of the Family, my god, just incredible. What every therapist wants to say to most of his or her recalcitrant, emotionally immature patients, and that's just the beginning.
Wonderful stuff. This series of sketches never stagnated. It evolved. Thanks so very much for these Family sketches you've shared here. It means a great deal. Sorry there won't be any more but I respect what you said above.
Interesting observation...very true, in a way. I'd go further and say a THREE of the Family meet that description. That was the brilliance of the skits. One skit you'd sympathize for one, the next, it'd flip. This was incredible writing, it really was. Buoyed by superb acting.
...... beautifully written and so true of many. Those who hurt you most, tend to love you the most. Too much of our lives are spent worrying about what others are thinking of you. The human disease. 😎☯️🌱
Mama was always especially cruel to Eunice. No wonder Eunice never finished anything and had no self esteem. Mama was always the first to belittle her and cut her down. Eunice just needed encouragement and backbone enough to walk away from her toxic relationship with her mother. Mama’s old hateful ass needed to be carted to an old folks home.
"You always get good jobs and people like you. I just don't understand it." Said after years of being told you're stupid and ugly, nobody will ever love you if you can't do better than that. It surely wasn't a comedy...
I have known people like Mama all my life. They want to do and say whatever they want. And when you stand your ground they can't handle it. And they accuse you of having a bad temper and attitude. But they claim they never did or said anything wrong.
Spot on. My mother was my worst nightmare. Funny enough, these skits were dear to her heart, as I suppose she got lots of tips of how to oppress me. I didn't have a clue what it felt like to get hugged, or encouraged. She didn't once say "I love you." She was expert at sarcastic remarks and making sure my dreams would not see the light of day. I didn't realize there could be good parents, and still feel completely awkward in the midst of normal healthy loving family atmosphere. (AND I WASN'T ALLOWED TO WATCH ANY TV.....)
My mother had a hard life, and she was wonderful most of the time. But she did have a habit of criticizing her children. I finally said to her, "Mom, you're suppose to lift your children up, not bring them down." She didn't know what to say.
People who have been inflicted with pain and never took a stand against it even as a child growing up become that child that was knocked down by that bully and they haven't gotten up yet and so its hurting them on the inside and they become angry and bitter and then they inflict others
Watching these episodes I understand why Burnett had such a long and successful career. Despite the grotesque characters she plays she remains vulnerable ... and it communicates to the audience. Beneath the superficial humour there is pathos and great acting. Such a talent.

I think she got more ideas of how to intimidate, and insult me constantly from this TV....
The skits are based off Carol’s childhood trauma
Its...a...comedy...show...featuring... skits...GROW UP
Eunice was really deep and a special character that you feel so sorry for.
I have never seen this, which is amazing. This is probably my favorite Eunice skit ever. Heartbreaking, and I just want to hug Eunice.
This made me tear up. Poor Eunice.
With a parent like "Mama", most of us would be climbing up the wall!!!
Schizophrenagenic mother.
Yes I did!
Yup. But still I can't help but love Mama
The last one, well, on the CBS at least. These are the best quality you can get on UA-cam! Fantastic! Do em all!
Carol Burnett is a brilliant actress. I just about cried when she said "I'm not okay and I've never liked myself" (sic)
@@Dion-rz3fz "Ya know . . . You're right - have a nice day"
@@TomLloyd-18 HahaHaHa! That was a good one!
Telling your child they'll never be anything is one of the worst things you can do as a parent.
@TCL true.
@TCL the extreme might be worse, in fact
That and cussing at them I consider to be abuse.
So true. It's cruel and thoughtless to tell that to a child.
WOW... As an adult seeing this... Whole tears to my eyes... TV was definitely Raw back then...
The psychiatrist is the same guy years later as a patient in golden girls who loves fire and asks Dorothy for a match lol
U must be a die hard fan because I knew that the moment I saw him too, it was a Christmas episode on GG your describing where the Santa held a fake gun .. big-time fan of both shows too😊
@@RoccoLove-l9q I am lol I watch so many TV movies and shows and see they use same actors in so many shows. Remember candy, the stewardess from golden girls that says "sit down Missy this isn't the Copa cabana" Lol omg she was used so many times for many parts! I'm lol in real time right now lol
@@thestumpavarieteeshow yes I remember that "candy" episode. She was in alote. I see many of them older shows and see alote of the same actors playing different roles. All in the family, Maude, Mama's Family etc
Oh yeah 😂
I love these episodes but I have to space them out to watch - just too raw to watch them back to back. Such talent!
I agree. There is a lot of dramatic reality in these sketches.
Me too. I love the Family sketches... but you are right....gotta leave a few days between viewing 'em, there's too much stuff which cuts way too close...for everybody, I'd imagine. That is why they were so brilliant.
Oh yeah -- quite raw if you tune out the laugh track. Lotta times It’s heartbreaking more than funny
@@indigothecat classic family dynamic. They step on your toes and when you finally retaliate, you're the asshole/crazy person
Kaoru Justice Yes Yes 👍🏻..Drop that old biddie at Ellen’s and Do t look back.
@@jeffreylorien6687 I relate so Much to Eunice it’s not even funny
I never realized how sad these sketches really were . laughing through tears sometimes keeps you from truly healing
I will focus on my toes with great mindfulness when down , under, barely hanging on..🦋🕊
Superb acting
this made me feel so sorry for Eunice
TS Novak Yes I even cried! I saw myself and my family in this skiit.
It should have. This was hilarious when I was a teenager. As an adult I realized how abused she actually was.
Hey so. I did find the show funny. but as I got older. it. is. not. so. funny. to. be. second .all. the. time. Wow. did
not see it. before. Dame. 😪😉
Thanks again and hope we get more some day ♥️
Absolutely. We see a glimpse of the relationship between overly critical Mama Crowley and Thelma in the Mama’s Family episode, “My Mama, Myself.”
Ironically it was Thelma (Mama) that finally broke the cycle when she finally confronted her own mother's ghost, and defied her by selling her brooch.
@@ajtmaestro and mama's birthday season 2, both are some if my favorites. Grandma Crowley was so bitter about everything 😆
@@BrokamaGay I think it would have been good if Carol Burnett had played Mama's mother
I do everything for everybody and everybody treats me like dirt-- the story of eunice's life. Poor thing...I always feel such empathy for her.
Thank you! Just as funny as it was 40 years ago! This was a great episode.
So hard to believe Vicky was a young lady playing Mama!! 🤣🤣
I know lol
Right.
When I found that out 😮😮😮wow
Hardest thing to admit there is a little Eunice in all of us
Right. We all have dreams that didn't pan out. The trick is not to become a prisoner to them. Find something new that's within your grasp. Work for it, and treasure what you have, and *can* do successfully.
Eunice was always my favorite character on this show. She kept me cracking up!!!
Aww poor Eunice. I just want to give her a hug on this one.
Especially at 16:28😢
Eunice. Always hilarious. Always heart-breaking.
"I'm not okay. I never have liked me." Ugh, I felt that ☹😢

What a good writing and a masterclass on comedy and tragedy so beautifully mixed by the outstanding Carol Burnett
Very heartbreaking when she says she not ok I suffer from depression and I know the feeling
A nod to the insightful, deeply affecting writing by Dick Clair and Jenna McMahon, who took Carol’s pain and turned it into something remarkable.
So often in these sketches reality hits home. While being hilarious -they speak truth to what members of the human family undergoes because of love for each other.
A great character. Just love her. Lots of shows with Eunice just flew by. We love Carol Burnette💖
I totally understand her in more ways than one I’m learning to detach Thankyou Miss Burnett for being relatable ❤
I'm supposed to be laughing not crying!!!
This sketch has to be one of the greatest episodes of sketch comedy on Television. The talent behind this episode of the Family, my god, just incredible. What every therapist wants to say to most of his or her recalcitrant, emotionally immature patients, and that's just the beginning.
I laughed as a child but as an adult I'm thinking damn that's my ex relationship. I feel you Eunice, trust me.
As soon as the lights come up on the psychiatrist I’m always like, “Wait! Ain’t that the pyromaniac from Golden Girls?!” 😅
Yup it definitely is. It was a Christmas episode on GG
A comedy skit filled with sadness and darkness....poor Eunice.
He liked to light matches in Golden Girls. Lol
THAT'S why he looked familiar! Thanks!
🔥💥🔥💥🔥💥🔥
I just wrote that at Bea Arthur's character...Christmas special lol!!!!
🔥💥🔥💥🔥💥🔥
Oh yeah.....I'd forgotten about that!
Exactly !! He was 'the patient' that time! Ha!!
😁
That was powerful and happens in a lot of families. We need shows like this back on TV. I have laughed my butt off
Never saw this one. I really felt sorry for Eunice here.
Very tragic and hilarious at the same time. Powerful acting.
Poor Eunice. 😕. Yes, I and so many of us loved these skits. But the truth of the matter is that they certainly had a toxic relationship.
Wonderful stuff. This series of sketches never stagnated. It evolved.
Thanks so very much for these Family sketches you've shared here. It means a great deal. Sorry there won't be any more but I respect what you said above.
When he said "say it and it'll be true; I promise you Eunice" was the most sincere thing I've ever heard on tv.
Oh! I had same in ACOA counselor. When I found out he was counseling women in parking lot at a bar/dance location for free; I shut him down.
Carol never got near the recognition for her acting that she should have.
"I'm NOT okay, I never have liked me." 😭😭😭😭
this hit hard
I wish I could give her a hug 😢
I strongly understand how she feels
@dhoerst me too 😂we have too start loving our selfs 😘💞🌹
That's just like me.
Thank you for remembering the date. I remember it well. Sad night.
Eunice was the most tragic character that ever appeared in a comedy
Interesting observation...very true, in a way. I'd go further and say a THREE of the Family meet that description. That was the brilliance of the skits. One skit you'd sympathize for one, the next, it'd flip.
This was incredible writing, it really was. Buoyed by superb acting.
If anyone who is a fan of Carol, but hasn't read her autobiography of her growing up years, I highly recommend it...One More Time, Random House, 1986.
I remember watching this as a kid and thinking what a witch Momma was to say those things to her own daughter.
...... beautifully written and so true of many. Those who hurt you most, tend to love you the most.
Too much of our lives are spent worrying about what others are thinking of you.
The human disease.
😎☯️🌱
"Ladies just let me get the golden lights up to your heads" 🤣🤣🤣
Honestly, that's one of the best of these I've watched. The ultimate Eunice and the ultimate Momma.
All of the cast was so wonderful and very funny and loved by us all 😅
Just Brilliant!
Thank you for these enjoyable videos that reflect on many of us.
Mama’s last line “you’ll never amount to nothin” was especially cruel
Meanwhile, that's actually Mama. A bitter-old widow whose own children avoid her like the plague.
If Ellen hadn't married rich, what the hell would she be?
@@ToscanaFirenze Mama was a complete jerk. My dad was the same way.
Thelma Harper is my mother. Some of these episodes make me wince.
@@gailbrooks4883 yes some episodes are painful to watch. It's sad that people grow up in this type of life.
Soml
There Narcissists
My mother had a hard life, and she was wonderful most of the time. But she did have a habit of criticizing her children. I finally said to her, "Mom, you're suppose to lift your children up, not bring them down." She didn't know what to say.
Poor Eunice. Momma is just so damn difficult!
Brilliant writing and acting.
My 76 ye old mother behaves nearly the same. She ruined my life and my sister's too with her horrible words.
Jesus loves you, sister. Call on Him!
I was so sad when the last episode aired with good reason.
Carroll Burnett and friends😇😇😇😇
*thanks* I laughed I cried I watched a gem of a sketch
I sensed a lot of pain in Eunice's character in this scketch. That is the magic of acting. Eventhough is a comedy, you can still feel the tragedy.
CAROL BURNETT will alwaze be my memory of growing up as a child, when back in da day, your lucky to have atleast one channel at times,, shit I never had a color TV till was all grown up and out of the MARINES!!! 1975

How nice it is to know that Eunice is seeking help
That was actually really sad. Poor Eunice~ 🥺
