Wow... that moment when she said, "I can't say that. Because I'm not okay, and I never liked me." I felt that. That was tragic.
There is usually a touch of pathos in all the Family sketches. It adds a subtle depth that makes them more than simple comedy.

Poor Eunice. This literally made me cry. You can see her eyes a bit watery when the psychiatrist was telling her to say "I'm okay. I like me". Carol is an amazing actress.

To be honest she treated her husband horribly.

I agree. Eunice is hardly innocent, but the general theme with these family sketches is that Eunice enters into things with the best of pure intentions but she is gradually pushed over the edge by the lack of support from those around her. It's sad that she grew up surrounded by that treatment but what's equally sad is that she drove her husband away by repeating what her mother did/does to her.
Carol Burnett should win a Lifetime Emmy, or Lifetime Oscar Award, for her achievements. She is a masterful actor.

@Soiled Cinder I feel for you and can relate. I think when a person gets tougher and starts letting it roll off you they stop trying it on.
As hilarious “The Family” skits are, it’s equally heartbreaking. Momma was so manipulative, she crushed Eunice spirit anytime she thought Eunice gained strength to move on with her life. And Eunice was her own worse enemy, she couldn’t just move on with her own life, without momma.
What's really sad is that in families such as this one, it's the "Eunice type" that ends up caring for Momma during Momma's final years, but of course Momma's property and $$$$$$ end up going to someone else in the family, usually a spoiled, selfish bratty sibling who never did much for the parent in the first place. This is really sad. In a lot of ways, this is like my family. Very destructive. Very manipulative. Very discouraging. Very heartbreaking. It's just sad. Some people are just not cut out for parenthood, but they're dumb enough to go raise kids anyhow. What a shame.

It's classic comedy!
Eunice is one of the funniest classic characters period. She's also one of the most tragic women characters too. When her husband ran off with the younger waitress, her older son ran off and never came back. Her youngest son went to prison and finally Mama died. She was all alone and it was like a Shakespearean tragedy. Excellent writing.

Besides never receiving a hug, never being told "I love you" and watching my 2 other sisters get all the attention and all they wanted shopping (myself allowed only experiencing "window shopping", I stressed the most trying to get acceptance or even acknowledgement that my dreams were valuable. Some have dream parents, like a beautiful dream catcher, I had dream smasher parents.
The finale was being tossed out of the house in to the street penniless because I had refused to eat red meat (or any animal flesh) or processed food that Mom cooked. I wanted to cook my own vegetable/rice diet (for better health).
It's awful.
I have a relative that is exactly like Eunice's mother. She's been out of my life for two years and I haven't been happier.
That's what you have to do-get rid of these uncle fuckers from your life.
The Family sketches were hilarious but I'm sure it hits home for many people suffering like Eunice. If this was real life, Ed leaving her should have been the ultimate wakeup call. Yes , Eunice treated Ed like dirt but she projected onto him all that she received from Mama all her life : verbal abuse , criticism and bullying.
*There is only one solution for someone like Eunice : get a job, any job to acquire self esteem and cut off Mama completely from her life. If she has to move away with her kids, so be it. People like Mama will never change as sometimes the most toxic people can be family. A loving family isn't always blood and LIFE IS TOO SHORT NOT TO BE HAPPY.*

She had a shotgun marriage to Ed, which was revealed in an earlier sketch. She had just come off of another huge fight with her Mama, who screamed at Eunice to get away from Ed and said he was no longer welcome in their home. Eunice, seeking to have SOME sort of positive validation, then threw herself at Ed who really just wanted to get into her panties anyways (revealed in his behavior as well as another sketch where her highschool friend told her that Ed came after her and other girls, too) After Ed knocked up Eunice, they got married.
yes/no...the brilliance of the Family skits were - there was NO hero. Ed, Mama, Eunice, they were all dysfunctional, damaged goods (just like we all are, really, eh ?) Some skits would show one behaving badly, one being the sympathetic character. we'd side with The next skit would flip it. I can remember many where Ed was a jerk, many where Eunice was a jerk...even a few where Mama actually showed a brief glimpse of being a caring mother. That was the brilliance of these.
No way does any writing today hold a candle to these....
@@2ndEndingVintage There was 1 episode where Ed was revealed to have attempted to cheat on Eunice, but had to settle for a massage parlor. There was another where Eunice revealed that she was hoping to get picked up when she went to a bar with an old friend, but didn't have any luck. In the massage parlor episode, Mama yelled at the 2 of them for thinking they were going to divorce, reminding them that neither was a prize, and both their lives would probably be even worse if they split up. While they did eventually divorce, it was mostly due to Harvey Korman leaving the show.
Ed only left because Harvey Korman had left the show. Otherwise he would still be there.

Tragicomedy. Carol Burnett was the master of this rare television genre. Carol liked taking audiences to an extreme comedic high all the way down to tragic sadness - all in 15 minutes.

Carol Burnett and her show was so special to me as a child. I was only 14 when this aired, but I knew it was quality. I can appreciate it so much more now as an adult. She is a stellar actor.
I agree. It's unfortunate that, when the Family sketches were spun off into Mama's Family, the brilliance of the writing and acting degenerated into cartoonish buffoonery. The Family sketches were a high point of television comedy; Mama's Family was not.

Thelma's mother was also verbally abusive towards her. But ironically Eunice was close with Grandma Crowley just as Thelma is close to Bubba.

Oh, this is *so* sad. As an adult that came from dysfunctional and sometimes toxic family dynamics, and then grew up to become a therapist, I see this from two different angles and both of them are so sad. Seeing Eunice actually *trying* and just being shot down by Mama hurt. Seeing Eunice actually having a breakthrough, I can identify with her elation and with the relief and pride of the therapist with a patient who has just made a huge step... And then to see that unrelentingly torn away by the family member who refuses to change... left me in tears.
Now as a 90-year old woman I've come to realize that the situations displayed were really sad times for anyone who was verbally abused as was Eunice, but it also went two ways. Despite all of that, I loved the show, I suppose, if only to realize how fortunate I was to have grown up in a loving and wonderful family. I will not say that there were no disagreements, but these were few and far between. These re-runs keep me entertained, especially now, since I am self-quarantined because of the coronavirus. Carol Burnett was a wonderful actress; the sitcom of 11 years was wonderful, and at this point I'm not certain if she ever won any awards during its lengthy run. I guess I'll have to start watching re-runs of the re-runs because I've seen them all.

Right. We all have dreams that didn't pan out. The trick is not to become a prisoner to them. Find something new that's within your grasp. Work for it, and treasure what you have, and *can* do successfully.
This is profound...Eunice admitting she's not okay and that she has never liked herself and then being told "say you're okay and it will be true." Too often people were told to ignore their problems, that it was "all in their minds," which is why mental health problems were so taboo and why we are now fighting to end the stigma of it.
It is okay to not be okay...just know someone cares and to seek help when needed.
Mama's glare right after "let's all become aware of our toes" is everything. This scene was amazing.

I’ve been watching a few of these and I feel really bad for Eunice. I mean she’s just as toxic as every other person of her environment, but at least she tries, she really tries to make things better for everyone and all of them just keep steppin’ on her. I couldn’t even take a single laugh during this one. I just really wish she could drop Mama at Ellen’s house with no announcement and run away out the town to never have to see them again. I really wish she could save herself, cause boy, this always leaves me feeling hopeless.
As Eunice would put it, nothing she ever does is good enough, whether it's her cleaning, cooking, or her "performance as a snowflake." She can jive with criticism for awhile, but getting constantly picked at causes her to lash out, and then the rest of the family feels re-justified in their criticism because they use her fits as an excuse.

This is so true to life that it can hurt. It’s also true to life that there are people,professionals and hope in God that get us above and beyond being hopeless. Like the counselor says, we have to help ourselves.One tiny step at a time,turns into miles as we go!❤️🙏Not easy but not impossible either. I always think it’s amazing that all the hero’s in the Bible aren’t the most handsome,or beautiful, strongest or smartest……the hero’s and heroines are the ones who started out one step at a time…….sometimes crying all the way…..but they made it!

If you consider this "heart wrenchingly painful" you are taking this skit WAY WAY to seriously! I'm sure the actors would not even have wanted it to be taken THAT serious. I think they just wanted to give a bit of depth to the character.
ALL "Family" sketches had alot of intentionally realistic and painful underlying stories and emotions involving dysfunctional people in them

Interesting observation...very true, in a way. I'd go further and say a THREE of the Family meet that description. That was the brilliance of the skits. One skit you'd sympathize for one, the next, it'd flip.

These have all been so sad, but I appreciate seeing them. I think I saw a sketch or two when I was small, and liked the antics, but looking at them now as an adult I can see some really deep stuff going on. I feel for Eunice, I want her to succeed in life. Seems to me like she's a nice lady who just wants certain things, and is surrounded by people who are too dumb or mean or selfish to give her any support. It kind of breaks my heart, even though I know these are supposed to be comedy sketches.
It's true. There is some residual effect of these comedy sketches when one starts to think about the implications of the really deep stuff going on.
Wow.... These shows were Mom's favorites and since she had total control of the TV, we kids were not allowed to watch any shows except Captain Kangaroo IF WE FINISHED OUR CHORES on a Saturday. 🤢😶
I think she got more ideas of how to intimidate, and insult me constantly from this TV.... But she had naturally a cruel streak, and was my worst nightmare. I didn't have any idea what other children's parents who were good were like. It's been a learning experience.
I completely agree. I was a child when these first aired, and the meaning behind these sketches went right over my head at the time. But seeing them as an adult is heartbreaking, touching, and darkly funny.

Superb acting
Poor Eunice. 😕. Yes, I and so many of us loved these skits. But the truth of the matter is that they certainly had a toxic relationship.
These "The Family" sketches are pure gold. Most of us can relate in some form or another with bits and pieces . . . and feel good that even our own dysfunctional family isn't THIS bad. But, now - decades later - I also find they help me find empathy for others. For instance I was walking my dog (who is very well behaved) without a leash the other day in the park down the street . . . a lady confronted me in absolute rage: "Don't you know . . . . " Although I instinctively wanted to return the rage . . . I, instead thought . . . I don't know what sorta day this poor woman has had - or - what the hell she has to deal with in her day-to-day life. So . . . I smiled and said . . . "Ya know . . . You're right - have a nice day" and briskly walked on. We never know how many "Eunices" are out there doing their best dealing with life. Perhaps teetering on the edge. We need to be kind to one another.
Kindness is also keeping a dog on a leash. Your dog may be the sweetest most timid canine around, but that other person walking along has no idea about your dog. Just sees a dog without a leash and the person feels defenseless. So your leash also reassures others. I will not even take walks outside in my neighborhood anymore, because of running across unleashed dogs. Some loose, some with owners. Leash laws NEED to be respected.

Dion has a point. The other person may have been attacked by a dog, or witnessed an attack, & that leaves emotional scars. Just as an example. A few dogs are perfect, off-leash. A fair number aren't self-disciplined enough to be off-leash in public. Unfortunately, that effects the great people who have dogs. Wjich is just to say, if both parties have a little consideration, it can make things better. If you leash your dog for a bit, when asked, you may help someone get over their fear. That could be something to be proud of.
I do everything for everybody and everybody treats me like dirt-- the story of eunice's life. Poor thing...I always feel such empathy for her.
This was so excellent! It had me in tears of laughter and tears of sorrow for many of us whom have endured similar experiences. These characters are true to form in many of our lives. Great acting to the ten's!

Meanwhile, that's actually Mama. A bitter-old widow whose own children avoid her like the plague.
Mama was always especially cruel to Eunice. No wonder Eunice never finished anything and had no self esteem. Mama was always the first to belittle her and cut her down.
Eunice just needed encouragement and backbone enough to walk away from her toxic relationship with her mother.
Mama’s old hateful ass needed to be carted to an old folks home.
"You always get good jobs and people like you. I just don't understand it." Said after years of being told you're stupid and ugly, nobody will ever love you if you can't do better than that. It surely wasn't a comedy...

This sketch has to be one of the greatest episodes of sketch comedy on Television. The talent behind this episode of the Family, my god, just incredible. What every therapist wants to say to most of his or her recalcitrant, emotionally immature patients, and that's just the beginning.
Never saw this one. I really felt sorry for Eunice here.

I never realized how sad these sketches really were . laughing through tears sometimes keeps you from truly healing
I didn't like these sketches when I was a kid, due to being extremely sensitive and feeling all the characters were suffering. I never enjoyed watching dysfunctional families on sitcoms. Probably, mostly though, because it hit too close to home. As an adult, I can particularly appreciate this. It's brilliant.
I have known people like Mama all my life. They want to do and say whatever they want. And when you stand your ground they can't handle it. And they accuse you of having a bad temper and attitude. But they claim they never did or said anything wrong.

Funny enough, these skits were dear to her heart, as I suppose she got lots of tips of how to oppress me. I didn't have a clue what it felt like to get hugged, or encouraged. She didn't once say "I love you." She was expert at sarcastic remarks and making sure my dreams would not see the light of day.
I didn't realize there could be good parents, and still feel completely awkward in the midst of normal healthy loving family atmosphere.

In her book, she said she based Eunice on her own mother. She said her mom was frustrated, angry, and unhappy bc she never caught a break and never had any dreams come true.

Oh! I had same in ACOA counselor. When I found out he was counseling women in parking lot at a bar/dance location for free; I shut him down.
If anyone who is a fan of Carol, but hasn't read her autobiography of her growing up years, I highly recommend it...One More Time, Random House, 1986.

The absolute brilliance of the writing and the taut, acrid performances of two truly dysfunctional relatives delivered here highlight this alternately hysterical and poignant segment of Eunice and Mama. Carol Burnett is a comedic legend, of course, but seeing the comedy growth of Vicki Lawrence over the years on the Burnett show is a real revelation. From her meek image as a shy kid sister type in the beginning to this scathing portrayal of Mama shows the daunting rise of her own comedy star that led to her own spin-off series. Brava all around!
This guy is the eitome of a clinical psychiatrist. This dialogue is so apt , it kills me with laughter. 🤣🤣🤣 Just goes to show, if you want to pull yourself out of a depression, you got to do it yourself. With Mothers like that, there will be no Clinical Pschiatrists left. Just golden lights moving all over the place.
The psychiatrist will need a psychiatrist by the time he's done, LOL. But poor Eunice couldn't do anything right in her mama's eyes. That was a big part of the issue.
I wish Eunice could have broken what seems like an endless cycle of abuse. Mama's mother probably put her down so she raised her kids the same way. Eunice grew up and internalized that hatred. She never finished anything cause she didn't think she could cause she never got support from her family. It becomes a self fulfilling prophecy. "You'll never amount to nothing" because you're always told you are nothing.

Absolutely. We see a glimpse of the relationship between overly critical Mama Crowley and Thelma in the Mama’s Family episode, “My Mama, Myself.”
Ironically it was Thelma (Mama) that finally broke the cycle when she finally confronted her own mother's ghost, and defied her by selling her brooch.

I have never seen this, which is amazing. This is probably my favorite Eunice skit ever. Heartbreaking, and I just want to hug Eunice.
My mother had a hard life, and she was wonderful most of the time. But she did have a habit of criticizing her children. I finally said to her, "Mom, you're suppose to lift your children up, not bring them down." She didn't know what to say.
So often in these sketches reality hits home.While being hilarious -they speak truth to what members of the human family undergoes because of love for each other.

AS I SEE IT, Eunice's problems stem from a selfish, domineering, uncaring mother who favored one daughter over the other. JMO you should never do that children - each child is different and special in their own way. Had Eunice been loved and cherished like her sister, she would have grown up with confidence and happiness, instead of insecurities and depression. JMO
In all the times I've seen the reruns, this was one I never saw. The chemistry Carol and Vicki had was truly magical and they just know how to tug the heart strings.
The irony here. The guy that plays the psychiatrist actually guest starred on Golden Girls as a patient visiting the grief counselor that Rose Nylund (Betty White) also known as Ellen Harper Jackson from these Family sketches and the original 1984 NBC first run of Mama’s Family worked for. He was the patient that hilariously asked Dorothy for a match, then lit it, and asked” Have you ever really looked at fire, can you imagine how much damage it can do if it got in the wrong hands?” 😂😂😂😂 sending Dorothy running to Rose to hurry up so they can leave for their Christmas vacations.
Golden Girls began airing after NBC cancelled Mama’s Family after 2 seasons, leaving Betty unable to return full time for the highly successful 1986-1990 first run syndication of Mama’s Family save for 1 guest episode in season 3, where Ellen was essentially Phillip in the Family Sketch of going into surgery for a “minor” surgery and having the family visit and make it a disaster

I always loved Mama's Family. I just recently found The Family sketches that include much more Eunice. I have realized in my family I am Eunice. Mama really was a bully. That is my story.

Beautiful betrayal of how dysfunctional families are in 'real time' . Eunice is trying to feel okay in spite of her mother's horrid nagging on past wrongs. Mama has decided life is suffering and she isn't afraid to tell everyone about their faults. Eunice had a dream but Mama inflicted doubt and fear into who Eunice was as human being. So sad, glad Carol broke out of the cycle... sadly two of her daughters got into the Hollywood drug culture. Today they are all drug free, Carried died of cancer another hard hit, but the two younger sisters have found careers in the music business. Thank you Carol for sharing and honoring your past.

Watching these episodes I understand why Burnett had such a long and successful career. Despite the grotesque characters she plays she remains vulnerable ... and it communicates to the audience. Beneath the superficial humour there is pathos and great acting. Such a talent.
Mama's Family was spun from this but was totally different. It was sweet and homey and funny. This was of course funny but made us look at ourselves and our pain as well. It was some of the best TV of that period. I didn't come from this type of home but you knew if was reality for many many people.
Now Voyager comes to mind with Bette Davis in this skit. Love The Family but can relate to Eunice in some issues. The backburner gets old. Harvey is hilarious and also belittled too. Poor Ed.
