When she gets a little bit bigger you could try getting her a petsafe collar you can let her out with if you have continuous problems with needing to go out to get her when its time to come in! You press the vibrate button and you can train her to get her attention to come in from the backyard!
I have this for my cat! He kept crossing the road, our house is by a busy main road, we were worried he wouldn't return or get run off. We placed the under ground wire about the house and it works! Just have to make sure the battery on the collar is replaced every couple of months. My cat is 9kgs so the collar fits nicely.
My friend used a similar collar for her deaf dog and it as an amazing resource. Not only for coming in from the yard but to find the human in the house.
My first dog (now my oldest) was born deaf. Best dog ever. She travels well, she pays attention very well, shes got tons of attitude for such a little dog. Shes the best behaved dog that we have ever had. I would love to always have a deaf dog because of her. I got her because I wanted a challenge but ended up with the easiest dog ever.
Have you considered taking her to a veterinary specialist for hearing test? That way the vet can suggest a device that will play tones that she will be able to hear that will be useful when calling to her from a distance, training her, or if there is an emergency and you need her attention as soon as possible and can’t get to her.
Just a suggestion, but maybe tap her surroundings or wave your hand in front of her first to get her attention instead of tapping her from behind. Usually you’re not suppose to come up behind a deaf dog because that scares them and depending on the person she could turn around and bite ( not saying she would) but just a heads up. That’s what happened with my friends deaf dog. Someone came up behind him and touched his back and he turned and bit, not hard, but like a warning bite cause he got scared.
Yessss, I went to try and adopt a deaf pit bull once and someone came up behind her super quickly and scared her so she turned and bit my leg really hard and one of the volunteers RIPPED her lead out of my hands and yelled SHE SHOULDN'T BE OUT HERE SHE ISN'T FOR ADOPTION. I was like, she was PERFECT until someone scared her. I wasn't mad she bit me and then soem scary woman comes up and reprimand her and drags her inside... It wasn't right. It pissed me off so much.
We are a completely hearing family but we associate a sign with every verbal command to enforce what we are wanting from our dogs. And it truly helped when our dog lost her hearing from age. We were still able to communicate 🙂
Summer Vibes I just started taking an American sign language class and now I can understand some of what he’s saying without captions. I feel so accomplished.
This is so cute!!! I trained my dog using LESCO (Costa Rican Sign Language) We are both hearing but she obeys better in LESCO and I feel we can communicate better using signs than me talking to her. By the way I love your channel and learning the differences and similarities between both sign languages.
Java is so cute.😍 When I was little, I was attacked by a dog really badly, so a therapist suggested my parents get me a dog right away, so I wouldn’t develop a fear of dogs. They ended up getting me a deaf dalmation. (My family and I can all hear.) She was the best and smartest dog. We would pound on the floor to get her attention and then sign commands to her.❤️
watching your guys videos really inspires me to learn basic sign language, but also you guys make it so easy for someone who doesn’t know sign language to enjoy your videos and that’s amazing
So true! I had two golden retriever (they don't live with me but I visit them from time to time). One of them, Mila, sits when you close your fist and when we took her out to the park she would stop and sit when I stopped to cross the street, also when signaling the floor she layed down. The other one, Pepe, knows how to count, so he will bark the amount of fingers you put in front of him... it probably doesn't have a wide use like other commands, but it's still pretty cool and we praise him for being an intelligent boy
What if you got a vibrating collar?(not a shock collar, just a vibrating one. It may also be a setting on a shock collar, and then just don't use the shock feature, but that's how it was on the one we had for our golden, but it was helpful cause she would run so far and wouldn't hear us calling anymore)Train her that when she feels that she needs to look at you, and from there you don't have to wait for her to look at you, you could get her to look at you. :) Maybe also a dog whistle would work?
I have a deaf pupper too. I got her when she was already a year old when she was dumped at our local shelter. She is a double Merle collie mix. Smart as hell, Knows all her hand signals, and can read my face like a champ. I love her to pieces and she is mine forever
Put a little peanut butter on your hand and as she licks it says kisses! Aww kisses! Then when she bites say no bite, kisses! Kisses! It really works to stop their biting. ☺️
That’s so great that you all adopted a deaf dog that is also a pit. Pits are so miss understood but are the sweetest dogs. He might not have had a chance to be adopted because of his odds. I adopted a pit bull a year ago and it’s the best thing that has ever happened to me. Love you guys :)

I grew up with a deaf Boston terrier, he was the best! He just passed on and this video found me at the best time. Thanks for sharing the cute puppy videos ❤️
Congratulations on your fur baby! Omg she’s a precious pup! I don’t know sign language but enjoy watching without captions so I can pick up things I understand then the second time around I watch with captions to see if I was correct! My husband and I had two dogs (lost one to cancer recently) but we’ve taught them a few hand signals which are important if they are at a distance and we don’t want to be loud (maybe someone is sleeping, or they are across the yard). We use signals for: stay in sight, come, go, quiet, and want a cookie? All signals were taught with words since they could hear and once reinforced and learned just the signal is used. Dogs are such a joy! Have fun, she’s going to grow up so quickly!
My sister had a blind (only light perception) and deaf dog and we never understood how to train him. He was pretty much never trained and we just cleaned up after him and helped him do little tasks until the day he passed. He was a sweet boy though. I hope Java is successful in her training. She’s a beautiful little girl ❤️❤️

My dog has just suddenly gone deaf, but luckily when we would call her and anything else, we always used hand signals anyway, but this is super helpful for the rest of her years.
I used to be a nurse and worked with children on ventilators. We use to use sign language with the kids and I taught my pup (who is hearing) some signs. He knows how to sit, no, more, all gone and a few other signs. I think sign language should be taught as a language in school just like French or Spanish. Started following Java on IG. Thanks for letting us watch you all!!
*LONG DEAF DOG ADOPTION STORY* i adopted my dog from my local shelter almost 2 years not knowing she was deaf, she was about 1 year old when we got her. she was kenneled with about 5 other dogs which im assuming were her siblings or were all just strays and found together. She never barked, when we called her she wouldnt pay attention, OH and she was ALWAYS scared (either from past abuse or just confusion). We soon realized she was deaf and now to get her attention when shes outside, shes usually laying right on the wall or the house no matter the location, we hit the wall a couple of times so she can feel the vibrations and she looks up/wakes up/reacts she then knows its time to come to the door. our neighbor recommended not going up to her and tapping her and catching her off guard because they go into shock and you wont know if she will try to run and hurt herself or might even hurt you. everyday you will learn how to adapt to your dogs needs better and better! best of luck to you guys!!!
I JUST FREAKIN' SAW YOU TWO IN A MUSIC VIDEO WITH STEVE AOKI AND THE BACKSTREET BOYS.... INSIDE I WAS LIKE YAAAAAAS YOU MADE IT!!! 😂 GOSH YOU ARE SO CUTE TOGETHER
She's so cute! The key to training a dog is consistency! My dogs are hearing but when I was training them to do tricks, I had to teach them a sign or symbol first and then associated the word to the sign or symbol. I was told it was good to teach signs and verbal commands, in case, a dog loses his hearing as they age. For calling Java in, you guys can use a flashlight or a vibrating collar.
Love your videos! Fun seeing Java as a puppy! Very cool to watch her progression. I've shared your video with a friend who recently adopted a deaf pup.
I got a Golden Retriever when I was 6 and I accidentally ended up training him hand motions (And verbal commands) Because I always did a certain hand motion when I said "sit" and a different one when I said "Stay" etc. In my mind, it was kinda just for catching his attention, but in the end I could get him to sit, stay, lay down etc with either a verbal command or a hand motion. It was actually very useful for him to understand hand motions.
A tip for getting her attention!! Try to tap her surroundings such as hit the side of the crate when she's inside, or tap on the floor if she's lying down there to get her attention. Hopefully the vibrations will get her to look at you so she doesn't get scared by you just tapping her. Maybe this will help!
Thank you so much for this video! I'm new to this channel, and noticed you two signing to Java in another video. My dog has been going deaf recently, so I found this video really helpful 😊
I legit love them so much! I found them on my recommendation And there so funny haha Im taking ASL as a college student and there deff helpful! Their relationship shows so much more then just being couple but shows patient, which is so important. You guys are such great role model!
I adopted my first puppy 4 months back. He was born completely deaf due to being a double merle. He is almost 6 months old now and he knows 20+ signals and commands through hand gestures and ASL. He even knows "bathroom" and will run outside to potty when I use that sign. He is an Aussie/heeler and is very much my velcro dog. I've found a lot of success through training him with a vibration collar. NOT A SHOCK COLLAR, obviously. I use the vibrate to get his attention. When we're at a dog park and he goes off to far, I give him a vibrate and he immediately perks up and looks for me. There are definitely some cons of having a deaf pup, but there are also a lot of pros. For instance they won't be afraid of fireworks or loud cars! They will also sleep a lot more. When it comes to training tricks, they're so much more focused because they're not getting distracted by all the sounds. The very first thing I taught my pup was "look at me" and he has taken that so well. I definitely recommend teaching that command super early on because later on in life they'll want to look for/at you more. My pup's name is Zero, because he has Zero hearing lol. Deaf dogs are amazing.
I had to pause this while watching it to go pet my doggos. I have two ten years old pups that I love so much and seeing Java made me think of them when they were super young. Having a dog is THE BEST!!! They add so much more love and joy in your life, it's incredible! ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
My dog just became deaf due to ear infection and im so sad. I was crying for four days straight. This video made me a little bit more aware of the fact that he is still my lovely baby and he is not any worse than other puppys and he can still be happy.
Hi :) yeah, he is still your baby. I don’t know if you saw our other video of the sign language Java knows, but I think that would be of interest to you. She show some of the signs java knows. There’s still so much you can teach your puppy!
You can also train hearing dogs with some signs. My childhood dog had signs for all the commands that we taught her that we learned at puppy school. ♥️
I'm so glad I found this. We are considering adopting a deaf dog. My big worry honestly is having people over and them startling or scaring her if they don't know how to act specifically if our house guests are children.
She's adorable!! And what teaching goes: even a hearing dog learns signs and body language (in some ways animals are smarter than most of people!) A deaf dog might just take a little more time!! That's all! 😊 And you guys are doing such amazing job by giving her a beautiful home and a place in such a lovely family!! 💖
He face is like tooooo cute. I currently have a puppy a bit older than Java and it’s crazy enough with him being able to hear me call him (though he chooses to ignore) so I can imagine It can be a bit challenging to train her, but once she gets it, she’ll be set. Also, puppies seem to get sign language better then words sometimes😂
Awesome! It’s takes time to train any dog and learning to catch up. I have a deaf friend who has a hearing dog. Both are some too. When my friend sign to his dog, she understood. But she so playful and brave dog. So, Keep teaching the sign so she will get better.
Y’all should look at the ecollars. Not the ones for shocking but some are only a stimulation that’s only like a tap on the shoulder but from far away. Good for deaf dogs and it helps them understand you are wanting them to look at you
I definitely think a vibrating collar would be a good idea to be able to get her attention to be able to sign the command to her. It is an amazing training tool and I personally use one and I recommend it.
Hi I just want to say you all great.i came upon your UA-cam channel, and thought you are all the best. I love how you incorporate ASL in your daily life, and teach us all of us about AsL. A s l is a huge part of my life as well and I'm very proud of it and honored by it You are all the best I am so glad to fellow you on on UA-cam, and Instagram. Love you.
Love your puppy! I also have a deaf pitbull, she will be 3 in December. It was definitely different and not easy teaching her all her commands and tricks but she learned them pretty quick. If u guys have any questions feel free to ask and I would be more than happy to help with what I can. ❤❤
She's so cute!! I'm so sad that my 13 yo min pin (one of two sisters) has gone mostly deaf over the past year. I thought she was just getting more lazy and defiant, but turns out she can't hear me most of the time. I am now searching UA-cam for how to communicate with her better. I love my babygirls so much, her sister Bella and the one that went deaf is Chloe. They are so sweet. They are now senior dogs and I pray they have several more years with me.
You also might be able to use a little vibrating buzzer on their collar or maybe a little spraying mechanism with a fragrant oil and train them to give you their attention when you activate it
My mom at one point told me that she thought my cat was deaf/hard of hearing. I was like... No. He's just very good at pretending he doesn't hear you when he doesn't feel like listening. He can hear the sound of a bag of treats, or a cupboard being opened. Just because he doesn't always react when you call for him, doesn't mean that he's deaf. X)
I'd be nice if there was like a collar that lit up or vibrated when you wanted your deaf dog to come to you. That also makes me wonder what other "deaf dog" specific stuff is out there because I've just never thought about it before.
Congrats on the puppy my wife and I are looking for a puppy and I love your videos my wife and friends are deaf and I'm hearing I love watching your videos without closed captions!!
idk why but i just now recently became fascinated and wanting to learn more about how does someone learn ASL and associating words while being hard of hearing and also on the flipside of someone being a partner to a person that is hard of hearing, if there are any things that you find difficult in a relationship
I just started learning sign language and I’m happy that I can understand some of the sign that you’re doing now☺️it’s so cute that java understands ‘I love you’
My dog is going deaf in his old age and one of the biggest benefits to us humans now is that when we wake up we dont instantly have to walk him because he can't hear us when we make coffee. he sleeps so much deeper now and snores, it's adorable
Hi my friends 👋 it's so good to see you guys again. your cute puppy is all grown up, but what, she can't hear? Oh! It's she's beautiful, and smart, and she's got you for a nice home, to take care of her.
Such fun and informative info!! Even though my Daisy dog can hear, I sign. Skye gets eat and outside mixed up sometimes. But for the most part, she's a smart doggy! She just turned 8!!

Wow, you 2 are so amazing and seem to have such a great relationship
I used to be a nurse and worked with children on ventilators. We use to use sign language with the kids and I taught my pup (who is hearing) some signs. He knows how to sit, no, more, all gone and a few other signs. I think sign language should be taught as a language in school just like French or Spanish. Started following Java on IG. Thanks for letting us watch you all!!
*LONG DEAF DOG ADOPTION STORY*
i adopted my dog from my local shelter almost 2 years not knowing she was deaf, she was about 1 year old when we got her. she was kenneled with about 5 other dogs which im assuming were her siblings or were all just strays and found together.
I am pretty seriously looking into adopting a deaf dog that I have had my eye on, so this was very helpful, thank you!
It was actually very useful for him to understand hand motions.
i took an asl class two years ago and watching this made me want to start learning again
I found them on my recommendation
And there so funny haha
Im taking ASL as a college student and there deff helpful!
Their relationship shows so much more then just being couple but shows patient, which is so important.
You guys are such great role model!
I'm so glad Java is learning ASL. Ellen, Ryan, keep teaching her. Java is so cute
I started following you guys yesterday and I can't wait to see more doggy videos!
thank you so much for the positivity
I'm thinking of adopting a deaf dog, this helped a lot. Thank you!
Ryan loves that you love ur fur baby❤️❤️❤️ he looks at u like this😍
Y’all should look at the ecollars.
I love you two. Beautiful people and your beautiful dog. ❤️
Java has blue eyes and is deaf just like Ryan, you all adorable ❤️
Hi I just want to say you all great.i came upon your UA-cam channel, and thought you are all the best. I love how you incorporate ASL in your daily life, and teach us all of us about AsL. A s l is a huge part of my life as well and I'm very proud of it and honored by it
You are all the best I am so glad to fellow you on on UA-cam, and Instagram.
Love you.
This is amazing! I have a deaf puppy too, so this is very useful and quite reassuring ♥️
I love this channel because I’m learning sign language at school and it’s such an amazing language and I just love you guys
Love your puppy! I also have a deaf pitbull, she will be 3 in December. It was definitely different and not easy teaching her all her commands and tricks but she learned them pretty quick. If u guys have any questions feel free to ask and I would be more than happy to help with what I can. ❤❤
Java playing in the back is the cutest thing lol
She's so cute!! I'm so sad that my 13 yo min pin (one of two sisters) has gone mostly deaf over the past year. I thought she was just getting more lazy and defiant, but turns out she can't hear me most of the time. I am now searching UA-cam for how to communicate with her better. I love my babygirls so much, her sister Bella and the one that went deaf is Chloe. They are so sweet. They are now senior dogs and I pray they have several more years with me.
You also might be able to use a little vibrating buzzer on their collar or maybe a little spraying mechanism with a fragrant oil and train them to give you their attention when you activate it
Aaaaa you guys are so sweet
What a happy family....
1 with hearing,1 deaf and the last one is half deaf huhuhu 😍😭
I hope the best for you guys
Java is the perfect name for her!
Miss Java is the cutest and smartest job! Thanks for sharing your journey with her!
of course
Do you know if Java can hear the high pitch of the squeaker when she’s playing with her chew toys?
we think she might be able to, not 100% sure yet tho
You guys parked in the most perfect spot for a cute background 😂 they grow so so fast! Keep up with taking as many pics as possible
I know right! I saw the building and I was like lets film here! LOL
I love how you can still talk with your mouth full :)
Y’all are great puppy parents!! I’m just starting to foster, I will definitely accept any that are deaf as well of course
Thanks keeping me calm too
I really love how ellen is so supportive
My mom at one point told me that she thought my cat was deaf/hard of hearing. I was like... No. He's just very good at pretending he doesn't hear you when he doesn't feel like listening. He can hear the sound of a bag of treats, or a cupboard being opened. Just because he doesn't always react when you call for him, doesn't mean that he's deaf. X)
I'd be nice if there was like a collar that lit up or vibrated when you wanted your deaf dog to come to you. That also makes me wonder what other "deaf dog" specific stuff is out there because I've just never thought about it before.
First a beautiful couple and now a beautiful family 💜💜💜
Congrats on the puppy my wife and I are looking for a puppy and I love your videos my wife and friends are deaf and I'm hearing I love watching your videos without closed captions!!
She is such a beautiful pup!
I’m curious, when you’re driving or on a road trip how do you guys talk to each other? Don’t you have to be focused/using your hands on the wheel?
idk why but i just now recently became fascinated and wanting to learn more about how does someone learn ASL and associating words while being hard of hearing and also on the flipside of someone being a partner to a person that is hard of hearing, if there are any things that you find difficult in a relationship
I just started learning sign language and I’m happy that I can understand some of the sign that you’re doing now☺️it’s so cute that java understands ‘I love you’
I didn't know dogs understand sign too that's amazing!
Hey guys love your channel. My mum had a white collie yrs ago that was totally deaf and my mum trained her to sit etc with signs
Such fun and informative info!! Even though my Daisy dog can hear, I sign. Skye gets eat and outside mixed up sometimes. But for the most part, she's a smart doggy! She just turned 8!!
Awe she is so cute! My husband and I are actually on the search for a deaf kitten to adopt 😁
good luck! I hope you can find one :)
