  • Former Australian PM Kevin Rudd visited the LKY School on March 18 and gave a wide-ranging lecture to a full house at the LKY School, delighting Chinese audience members with his fluent mandarin.
In a subsequent exclusive interview with the LKY School, he spoke to Dean Kishore Mahbubani about China's new leaders and the problems they are grappling with in terms of growth and climate change, the sweet spot between the theory and practice of public policy and why Australian students should study at the LKY School. I really like watching prediction made in the past and do a reconcilation with reality. Kevin Rudd really just blew my mind. The only thing that he would never, ever foresee is that in 2021, Australia would be leading the drumbeat calling for war with China .

Not calling for war at all! Just pointing out that if china attacks taiwan and if the USA gets involved in a shooting war and if oz is asked to back up the USA where possible, then china will attack Australia, its just a heads up of a possibility based on Chinas threats of totalitarian expansionism.

@@rodgerhempfing2921 if China does attack Taiwan, the decision should be based on Oz commitment to defend democracy instead of a command from America. Which means, if Amercian does not defend Taiwan, Oz will not honour its pledge on defending democracy ?

Rather than worry about string of pearls in south Asia, India should worry about how dysfunctional it became since 1947, when Gandhi chose the path of division instead of unity (he had no mandate to divide the country, but agreed to do so only to appease the Anglo-Americans) resulting in a united India where they are happy to be able to speak in English and play cricket and remain 'slumdog poor'. Majority Indians have no basic human rights (dalits) and no neighbor is friendly to India.

Surely China would plan her own future as far as trade is concerned though I tend to think that since she could not compete against China it would better she stays out. This is one man's view about the future of China - what matters is, PEOPLE - and the QUALITY their DAILY LIFE. In the last half century not many countries have actually DELIVERED TO THE PEOPLE - China has done so far more than any other country. I am not talking about political systems - I am talking about jobs, housing, education, food supply, parks, culture, dynamism, belonging, etc. In less than half a century China has transformed itself from an agrarian society to a powerful INDUSTRIAL society - and now into a HIGH TECH society. What has driven this transformation? FOCUS, stability, pragmatism, and a life view that is spread over generation rather than a single lifetime. What the future holds for mankind is, in many ways, being built in China - but eventually this new Chinese Empire will also fall - but it will never be forgotten. The Egyptian Empire rose very quickly and lasted 4,500 years before it fell to the swords of Greek and Roman Armies, and even today we marvel at their achievements. Today China is the most Dynamic society that mankind has; and it appears willing to share its achievements - and yesterday's offer of their opening their future Space Station to all and sundry only goes to prove it.

Kevin Rudd never fail to impress me about his intellectual capacity.. The mystery is for his fallout with Australian voters...

    • @MonMalthias
      @MonMalthias 8 років тому +20

+Peter Wang Rudd's mistake was not in his ability or vision. In fact he had an excess of both.
His mistake was doing too much too fast. He lost the backing of Labor when his positions went against dogma and he was deposed by Gillard.
The same thing happened in 2012; only, that he tried for PM when the Party had already soured on him. The resultant infighting and fallout caused the Australian public to lose confidence in a party that had devolved to rampant leaks, attacks and a lack of concrete policy of any kind.
So we voted in a neoconservative with a penchant for gaffes. The plus side was that it reassured the average Australian voter that they had a leader who was more down on their level; perhaps a little lower. Frankly I'm surprised and a little saddened that Abbott survived as long as he did. And now we have Turnbull, a fresh man with a fresh face but pushing policies that are the same as Abbott's.
Unimaginative and vain. We are spinning our tires in the wake of the commodity crunch without an exit strategy to grow the economy in a different way. The NBN might have been that big infrastructure project to give Australia the technological edge to compete in an increasingly digital world, but LNP stonewalling has ensured that it will be billions over budget and far inferior to the scope and capability it was originally intended to be. The abolition of the mining and carbon taxes - intended to combat Dutch Disease - also served to increase the budgetary deficit and destroy our capability to use that foreign capital infusion to spur other parts of the economy. The baffling switch from open competitive tenders for defense contracts to back room dealing pours billions down the drain for questionable capability at the time our armed forces reach end of life on their materiel. The current stance in foreign policy appears to be that there is no foreign policy.
We now have had 5 prime ministers in as many years.
Frankly, I think it reflects the power vacuum that Rudd left. It reflects the voter's increasing dissatisfaction with simply enduring, instead of progressing. Both incumbents - Turnbull and Shorten - got to where they are now, by playing Party dogma and sticking to party lines. They have not the wherewithal nor the courage to do anything more than the bare minimum.

Note that the USA gives Japan only administrative role to the island. The implication is that Japan cannot breach this role by populating them or otherwise using them.
China also knows that if Japan populates the islands and if China does nothing, then the Japanese population on the islands will decide sovereignty. Hence, the USA will stipulate to Japan that it cannot breach its administrative role. The USA fears causing a war.
Without Japan breaching the administrative role, there will never be finality to the sovereignty. Well into 2040 2050, the islands will still be disputed. By then, comprehensive power will decide and prevail--China likely will eventually win and China at this time can wait.

It is interesting to observe how different societies react to leaders of their own nations. Kevin being a very practical leader in dealing with the world at large and particular in his understanding of China and her influence around and yet Aussies refused to let him to lead. Well that is democracy! The current policy of the present Aussie government is basically based on Trumpism, fearing the growing influence of China based largely on her economic power. And Australia is definitely on the right side of this exchange and yet her current leadership prefers to sacrifice this exchange based on White's supremacism? Of course, trade requires two parties to tango, I guess Australia thought that since China needs plenty of iron ore, where Australia has the largest reserves, and China produces some 60% of the world production and China would have to depend on Aussie's ore. But they forgot China too has her reserves so has Russia where it is only nearer but can also contribute to the balance flow of goods from the West to the East based on rail freight! A number of the CIS nations also have iron reserves, hence we can see some changes in the near future!

In some ways, Kevin Rudd's thinking was still restricted by the Western government ideas.
You completely misunderstand why he removed term limits, and you also treat this with double standards.
Many European chairs don't have term limits either, yet no one calls them "president for life".
Every leader has their specific projects that they're working on, and it's best to not get of the driver when the train is picking up speed to go on a difficult terrain, especially since that driver would know the details and information better than any other that could take his place. In fact, terms are one of the issues with the Western countries, as nothing can get implemented. Every time someone comes into power, they try to implement this grand project which gets ripped up by the person after them.
      China does not want this.

@@angeliquewu8318 There is a fundamental difference in philosophy. I believe leaders should be dominated by the people, with multi-party elections every three - four years. In China, every candidate must be selected by the CCP, only 90 million people out of 1300 people. You may think differently, but that does not alter the gross loss of freedom in a one party (yes I am aware of the sub-parties) state. The Taiwanese people do not want that, and they deserve to be delivered from tyranny and oppression.

I don't think they would want the US democratic/ capitalist system that is treasured by its own people and highly admired by the the Western World. Whereas the US is actively promoting it's own brand of democracy all over the World wherever it can, China is not on that track.
