2005 Volvo XC90 Blower Control Not Working

- Any suggestions?
Turning the control to increase or decrease the blower speed does not work. The control does not respond to regulate the blower speed. Pressing AUTO does cause the blower speed to change. The blower motor and resistor were recently replaced with new parts but this not not correct the problem.
The temperature controls works fine. The AC is cold and the heating works. Defrost engages full speed when selected. Only issue is with the ability to manually regulate fan speed.
Hi all, here is the fix: It is the switch. 1-2 hr work. Take the CCM console out. Be patient in all your maneuvers. Take the lower part out and take that apart to get at the circuit board. Be patient. Hold the board in your hand and plug it in (the green plug). Turn the switch and give it pressure left and right, you will see it comes on and on intermittently. Unplug and spray switch (the small openings...) with an electrical contact cleaner (that is plastic safe...). The switch looks solid state but it is not since you are mechanically turning it. Blow off the residual with an air compressor. Replug the board. Mine worked fine. Reassemble the CCM in reverse order. Be patient. Oh yeah the airbag warning light came on so I will have to use my VIDA to turn it off. Some joker thought it would be funny to wire the airbags warning through the heating console when they designed it. The fix for that if you do not have a VIDA is to unplug your battery before you do any of this but you will not know when playing with the switch if it is intermittent. Bonne chance.
I'll try this later today. Thanks so much in advance if it does.
This is the only fix that worked for me: ua-cam.com/video/E1PC3boBPLM/v-deo.html
I had an XC90 owner coming to buy a blower resistor. We tested two good resistors and a second blower and it was working very intermittently. After 2h we figured out that removing the fuse from the resistor was bringing the blower back to life with normal knob operation. So one thing to do is to replace the resistor with a good working one - preferably an original Volvo one new or used (the resistor from an S60 was working fine on the XC90 even if the fan blowers were different), then with the new resistor try removing the fuse for a while, maybe that will reset the CCM. Also, make sure the sensor behind the grid near the right temperature knob is not dusty, blow some air or use a thin toothpick but don't touch the sensor because it's fragile.
What fuse and thanks for your info on your channel
I've had similar issues with 2006 xc90. Fan control intermittently not working, blower fan unresponsive. each time I pulled the negative battery terminal, which solved the ussue. Great car but the ecm has too much control. A glitch will cause troubleshooting headaches.
Finally fixed it!! I ended up replacing the entire CCM. I ordered a used one from Erie Volvo Parts for $80 with shipping and they offer a lifetime warranty. Everything is plug and play. You will need to match the serial number on the back of your unit with what Erie has in stock. Call their 800 number if you need help. Jack was was very helpful. Removal and install was not that bad. About an hour. Erie’s UA-cam channel has a video on how to remove the old CCM. Be sure to disconnect the battery before you start or you’ll get an airbag warning. If that happens you’ll have to take it to the dealer to have them turn it off for around $200. Would also be a good time to change the bulbs on the back of the CCM as well. Swede speed has a good write up for that.
Hey Owen. So I had my S60 (same CCM as yours) into the shop. The mechanic also noticed the blower switch issue that we all have been struggling with. His first thought was the entire panel had a short in it somewhere. He did not think it was the resistor. He recommended that I replace the car's battery because of an unrelated issue. Now the CCM works perfectly. No more mind of it's own. The fan control knob is completely responsive. The mechanic thinks that it was either having the battery disconnected (I doubt it because I have read a lot forums where this has not solved the issue) or the new battery was generating the proper amount of juice. Not sure how old your car battery is but it might be worth looking into. I get the car back tomorrow and will keep you updated.
Chris C great thought I hadn't really considered. thanks for the comment! new car battery was installed brand new about 1.5 years ago. the battery I pulled out was the original. there was no specific reason I changed batteries other than I live in a cold climate and it was still the original so it was just preventative maintenance but the fan issue was with the old battery too. hope it works for you when you get your volvo back though! keep me posted!
Hey Owen! Just wanted to give you and everyone else an update. I replaced the resistor and it worked perfectly. I order a new OEM resistor from IPD. I have read all of the forums regarding this issue and apparently certain aftermarket resistors (usually the cheaper ones found on Amazon and eBay) do not play nice in our P2 Volvos. Here is the link for the new resistor from IPD.
www.ipdusa.com/products/7425/115070-heater-fan-resistor-p2-s60-s80-v70-xc70-xc90
Best of luck
Hey Chris thanks for following up with specifics. Glad to hear the resistor solved the issue. I also used the Behr resistor that you purchased from IPD but it did not solve the problem. Might give it one more try. The battery is something I have thought about but I bought a battery that was supposed to provide the best performance, cold cranking amps and even have plenty left for anyone who wanted to plug in devices etc. I am going to try a new resistor, battery or xemodex soon. I will post results.
Did you replace the motor as well or just the resistor?
Hey Owen. I just did the resistor. The fan was in good shape. I did give the bearings a shot of lithium grease though. Today I noticed that sometimes it still does not respond to my commands. Not nearly as bad as before though. I was also thinking about going to the dealership and have them update the software for the CCM. It just depends on whether or not I want to shell out $150 for something that may or may not work.
I just gotten another HVAC Head Unit at the Junkyard which worked great.
I had a parts Volvo in the yard so I took the blower motor from that and it seems to be good. keep you posted.
Need to replace the HVAC control module, that's the actual module on the dash with controls.
My blower stopped working. The lights on the panel still were lit. I had shut it all off and went to turn it back on and nothing would come on and then later all the lights stopped being lit too. Do the lights work like xmas bulbs? If one goes/ burns out do all of them stay off too. Coincidence: blower and panel bulbs? The fuses are all good. The Battery disconnect is tempting. Another youtube says this is bad for sensative thermistor!!! Pepermint says to turn on key and have the headlights on when you hook up the battery. The owners manual say to be sure the key is off!!! Who is right? Very interesting range of possibilities. Thanks! Thought I would add my related problem to the universe and see if it pulls in any comments My blower failed to come back on after I shut it off one day. The defroster had been going for a while, the interior of the car was warm and so I just twisted the fan knob to off.
When a little later I wanted heat I twisted the knob, pushed the cabin buttons and noticed the fan was not blowing at all. The lights all responded to my knob twisting and button pushing on/off , high /low but nothing happened. I parked the car, did other stuff and then when I started it again the whole panel stopped lighting up. Still no blower or anything else of course. Now after several different versions of UA-cam presentations, checking all the fuses and confirming sufficient voltage with the battery/ alternator. Are there any more fuses that could explain this. It is 2021 and the car is a 2001 V70xc
Age and all things so related. But all this so suddenly? A replacement heater control panel looks inevitable and a blower motor too perhaps. But is there a quick fix? Anyone have a thought about all this? Happy New Year in any case. Please wish me luck.
Great video and info. Got this dreadful problem solved :) thanks
Would adding a toggle switch in line with the fuse kind of fix the issue?
Owen, I do not know if you are still dealing with this issue, but I might have found that the issue could be the transistor and not the resistor; it's used to control the fan's speed. I wouldn't know which kind your car might need, but I know for my car it could either be a MJ802 max of 30A, or a 2N3055 that has a max 15A. I haven't changed it on my car yet, but I will be working on it soon. If you are still having the problem, just comment back and I'll let you if I was able to fix it.
Hi Sebastien, thanks for the great information. I am revisiting this issue as it is starting to get on my nerves again. It wasn't so bad in the summer heat when I was okay with the fan stuck on a high setting. Can you provide more info about the possible transistor fix?
Did it get fixed..?
I knew it was too good to be true. Back to the same issues with the fan control knob.
thanks for the (unfortunate) update. I'll keep posting if there are any fixes. Stay tuned.
I have the same problem, it just has a mind of its own!
+mega montana agreed. tried a few different replacements without any luck to this point. Still searching.
owen I fixed it!!!!! it was the resistor, maybe the resistor you got is bad?
thanks for letting me know. I have thought about taking another crack at the resistor (or blower motor) but the parts I got were new so I have held off to this point. if I do I will post.
My xc90 blower isn't working also. All of the lights are working, the lights on the speed are responsive too but doesn't turn on the blower. I think looking at all of the comments I'll start with disconnecting the negative on the battery. Then maybe the resister. I'll keep you posted.
Kevin Handley any luck fixing it, I'm having the same problem, I replaced the blower and resistor and it still don't work
@@clintonsisler I have the SAME problem. I replaced the blower and resistor too and nothing. Did you guys have any luck fixing it?
@@luarmagician same buddy
@@jamesschoenherr3885 I actually discovered the blower motor I bought was faulty. Still havent bought a new one tho.
I thought mine was bad as well but I replaced it with a new one which worked during testing but after I installed it it didn't work again so I'm not sure where I'm at this point. I was able to calibrate it once but I can't seem to figure out how to recalibrate it a second time
Hey Owen, I have this same problem. Randomly it works fine, but only for a short time, then goes back to stuck on whatever position you had previously. I replaced the "resistor" in the fan motor housing, but the problem remains, just like you. I'll be searching for fixes, and if I find it, I'll try to let you know.
Thanks for the comment. The previous comments and write ups online keep mentioning the resistor but I had also replaced mine with a brand new behr replacement. I will probably look for a genuine volvo replacement from the junkyard as the cheaper fix, otherwise I will be going the xemodex route. xemodex.ca/ca/product/climate-control-module-cloning-service-for-volvo-p1-platform-30782904/
Thanks for the link. I would also like the cheapest fix possible.
Here is the fix: it is the switch. Took the console out. Be patient. Take the CCM out. Take it apart. Take the circuit board out. Hold it in your hand and plug it in (the green plug). Turn the key on. Move the knob left and right with some pressure, you will see sometimes it works, sometimes not. Use an electric contact cleaner (good on plastic...) to clean it. It looks solid state but it is not entirely since you are mechanically turning it. Blow off the residual liquid with air (compressor...). Replug the board and test. Mine worked just fine. Reassemble in reverse order. Be patient. Oh yeah, the air bag warning went on, I will have to use my VIDA to turn it off I guess. Some joker though that would be funny to link the airbags to the heating system when they designed it...
Did you check the fuse?
Did you find a fix ? I have the same problem, at least you saved me from buying a blower and or resistor
I have xc90 2007 the lights was on but the blower is not working
mine is still going strong, like I said you might need volvo oem parts. I was lucky I have a volvo xc70 in my yard and they were the same. but my fan also stopped working all together.
volvo oem parts to attempt to replace the blower motor and resistor (a second time) is the other option for this issue. first option is getting the module checked out. Thanks for your comment it helps out a lot with possible solutions.
Did you ever fix it?
Been reading here. My car intermittently would keep the blower running even after ignition is off and key is taken out.
When it does that, I cannot change the blower power. It seems that blower power is left at where it was last time and wont respond to adjuster knob. Sometimes, if I turn the engine back on and try to readjust the blower it would work but not always. I have narrowed the possibilities to 3 areas of the car to replace- Climate Control Unit, Blower Motor and Resistor. And as you are saying that you have replaced the motor and resistor already, you might want to research to find out if your climate control unit itself is faulty. Bytheway, before replacing the motor/resistor, did your blower keep running even when the engine was shut off?
climate control blower does not continue to run once car is shut off. I know electric fan for the engine's radiator does run for a bit after the car is turned of for moisture reasons. Check swedespeed or other forums. they do mention the cabin fan as well.
the CCM is my next bet since I have already tried he blower motor and resistor. I figure there is an electrical issue. I have found a company Xemodex (via FCPeuro) that looks like they may be able to fix it. You send in your existing CCM for them to check for electrical issues. I will probably try that and report back.

Did u ever find the problem
My heater is stuck on after i turn the car off
It keeps killing my battery i have to pull the fuse
Krystal Brand The blower turns on maximum after the car is off to dry out the A/C system so mold doesn't grow. This is normal behavior. If it kills your battery, that means you need a new battery. Happened to a friend of mine on a hot summer day. He got a new battery and no problems since.
This gremlin activation of the cabin fan is so strange but somewhere it was mentioned it has been part of the actual normal design in these models. It must drain the battery but it is supposed to help with a/c moisture in the system after shut off while parked. The years make a difference in how long the sensors tell the fan to stay on.
I have the exact same problem as you with my 2005 s80 D5. I hope you've found a solution!
My local dealer told me to replace the climate control unit in the dashboard completely. Has anyone tried that yet?
I know it's not a solution, but at times when the knob doesn't work and I really need to adjust it, I can change it by pushing real hard just below the knob on the right side. By pushing the unit at approx 4 o clock (position) with my thumb and turning the knob with my other hand it sometimes work. You need a lot of force to do this, but it helped me several times stopping the fan blowing on max speed.
Going to try this in the morning!
Did you find the exact problem ?
It is the control unit at fault
Here a "tiny" tutorial :)
1) disconnect the battery(if not disconnected, SRS Airbag light would come on and only a good tester can delete it).
2) remove climate control module(easy, see forums or youtube)
3) take it apart carefully(not a big deal, just a lot of screws and some patience...)
4)!!!! At step 3) be careful not to tear apart the temp sensor. It is very fragile and hangs on the plastic part with the knobs.
5) get contact spray or white vinegar and clean the fan knob(potentiometer). Turn it while cleaning. Don't be too shy to use a lot of spray/solution.
6) to me it worked great only for half a year. Then again... Best solution: take the board to an electronist to change the potentiometer(not a rare or unique part, easy to do).
Cool. thanks.. going to try this
may be a calibration will work. I'll do a try tomorrow
+linux 93 no luck to this point. changing the motor and resistor was the obvious (and documented) solution I have seen online for related issue. What do you plan to recalibrate? Recently I read about using some electrical contact cleaner to clean the connections. I do believe the problem is in the control module (underneath rdio, above shifter) itself. My other thought is trying to replace the entire control with an identical one if I can find it on eBay.The search continues...
+Owen Murray. This is the procedure I followed, as suggested by some volvo forums: Turn ignition key in position II; turn the fan speed knob to full speed (all green leds on) and afterwards turn it to minimum speed (single red light on); switch off ignition key and then turn it again in position II. This worked in my case (only one day of observation however). I'll take you updated. My problem was that the climate control worked well in automatic but the fan knob didn't respond in manual. I recently had a new fan motor and resistor, so if the problem persists then it is likely to depend on the control unit.
+linux 93 . still working, touch wood...
+linux 93 thanks for the update. I will try this process tomorrow and post my results
No luck trying the calibration method mentioned by +linux 93. Fan speed knob does not respond when key is in any position in the ignition. Problem remains unsolved.
Same problem here. Did you fix this?
Thanks.
+free fremen no luck as yet. Thanks for commenting. I have posted this on some forums as well so hopefully there is someone out there with some knowledge. Recently read about using electrical contact cleaner, but I do not want to risk causing other problems with the temperature or other buttons on the control module. Other thought is to try and replace with an IDENTICAL matching climate control module. Had this issue for over a year now and a solution seems unlikely but I continue to search.
Does anyone have solution? My volvo 2002 has the problem where fan speed glitches. I twist gnob and it jumps forward and backward just one speed. It also gets stuck and acts weird. I rly need help becuase its been going for years
Did you ever find a fix?
@@ericbshoaf1466 nope
I have a XC0 and believe it or not a 63 yo woman can troubleshoot and fix stuff. LOL A lot of issues are with fuses, electrical with this model. Including ABS light problems, sensors in the tires and low and behold (the bad thermostat in an XC90). Yours is definitely a gap in reading from sensor to thermostat. First, try a new fuse. If that doesn't work (Above the passenger side temperature control dial are 3 horizontal slots. Here's where the temperature sensor is. Blast compressed air at these slots. This should clean the sensor of dirt. This should work. If it doesn't, will have to take apart. If that doesn't work, a new thermostat for the climate control.
Anyone know how to fix the cigarette lighter when that goes on the fritz, blows fuses? My Garmin is 5 Volt, just like the fuse. Granted, that's not much. However, I've never had problems pluggin in a phone charger behind my console and the Garmin in my front Cigarette lighter. Now, I do!
Same Problem
Did you find out what causes this?
no luck yet. you have the same problem?
I have the same problem. Been told to just replace the whole CCM.
Hello! I'm having the same issue. I was just curious if you were able to resolve yours. Thank you kindly.
No resolution thus far. Going to revisit in the next few weeks either with a genuine OEM volvo resistor (if I can find one) or send in the module to xemodex.
Owen Murray bought a v70 today.. it worked fine when I drove it home (2 hours drive) but I went out to check a few stuff and then this suddenly happened on me too :/ so I'm not sure what to do atm
I FOUND THE ANSWER !

still waiting for the answer!
