I don’t think these will be used on the majority of tankers and freighters as the cost and maintenance isn’t worth the cost versus a shaft right off the engine. Cruise ships like these to self dock without tug assistance.

the video completely drifted into another topic about some big icebreaker
So basically turn the propellers into rudders huh? Makes you wonder why didn't we think of this sooner...
Good thing there aren't many thick ice sheets to deal with any longer
Surely the references to turning radius are wrong. A rudder cannot give a smaller turning radius than an azipod.
While at speed it could. In dock the azipod can spin it in place something a rudder cannot do.
0:20 what do you mean "close" to the stern of the ship? Is the furthest thing aft of the ship, NOTHING behind it.

Yes, as you said a shaft right off of the engine. Many tankers and freighters don't even have neutral let alone reverse.
@@garyradtke3252 Many freighters run two cycle engines and they reverse the engine to go backwards just like our snowmobiles.

How do they keep the water out of the pods? Do the pods have bilge pumps?
Huh? Seals man. How do they keep the water out of ships with propellers? Or submarines? They have props, periscopes, and torpedo tubes
