Similar to the US Army with training in PT-17 biplanes, with the trainee pilot in the front seat, and the instructor in back where they can take over the controls if needed. The PO-2 was also used in the civilian market as a crop duster. By Feb 1943 the 588th was give "Guard" status, an incredibly high honor in the Soviet military.
Yes, definitely. You see, I'm Russian and for a long time thought that the name "Night Witches" was made up by soviet guys because of the way this story is told in our schools. They were very proud of the name, we are very proud of the name. I thought this way even though teachers had always said that the name was made up by german. But I could not find the proofs, and somehow decided that it was a bit of our self-encouragement. Also. Even if the name had any intention to offend the girls, the name has a bit of fear in it. And this fear gives that feeling to take the name with pride. (Dogs also can be used as offensive statement, but nobody can say that Hell Dogs didn't carry the name with pride too).
For your students., Sabaton actually got a youtube channel called Sabaton history channel, this was made because the song itself couldnt describe all the details in 1 song, so actually on this channel there is a explanation to the song before it starts, real good if you want the whole story, and some clips more real, also perfect for your students to watch.. i think it was on this channel i heard that the nickname Night Witches was given, because with the silence engine, and women controling them, the planes coming in was more like broomsticks coming in, with these totally fearless women..
Thanks for another great reaction Mr Viking. It seems all we learned in history classes (when I was a student maaaaaany years ago) was what year a certain king , when a battle took place or other minute stuff that doesnt really leads you down the interesting history lane. With Sabaton there has been so many times were I have listened to their songs and just immediately headed over to wiki (ok, not the best source I know) to learn more about the event/persons thery are sining about. Has happened with me for example about Night Witches, Resist and Bite, Attack of the Dead Men, Alvin York and more recently Christmas Truce.
My grandmother was in the Women's Air Service Pilots. They flew all the prototypes for the american planes in WW2. There's a funny story of her delivering a new B17 and the base almost accidentally rejecting the delivery because they expected a male pilot.
The aircraft they used were Polikarpov PO-2s (sometimes called U-2). The aircraft pretty much was a trainer/recon/spotter aircraft. To even consider it an attacker would be a massive overstatement of it's abilities, the thing could barely maintain level altitude at full bomb load let alone climb. You mentioned war thunder; It's a hidden event aircraft that needs to be earned during the Halloween events. In meme culture the aircraft is often referred to as the OP-2 as in "overpowered" because it is so bad that one might consider it the greatest and mightiest war machine ever built. Funnily enough this thing actually had a confirmed air to air (in air) jet kill during the Korean war... An American F-80 shooting star attempted to shoot the PO-2 down by tailing it. The difference in stall speeds and low experience of the pilot lead to the F-80 crashing. Not sure if the PO-2 ever scored a hit but considering it had a defensive gun at the back seat is all the reason one needs to be able to assign this kill to the mighty Polikarpov. I pointed out that it was an in air kill because it, also during Korea, disabled/destroyed multiple American jet aircraft in airfield bombing raids. As for shooting one down in a German fighter, I would sum it up as a pain in the arse. Whether it is war thunder sim or IL2 battle of Stalingrad, killing them is a huge nuisance even during the day. If I had been a German pilot, regardless on if I wanted to increase my airkills and the thing was defenseless; If I had stumbled upon one by night, I would probably just ignore it because it's too much effort considering my stall speed was higher than their cruise speed. I recommend getting it when you've got the chance. Acknowledging and experiencing it's shitness makes you even more speechless every time you think of the night witches.

Hey Simple Viking. Just to put this story in perspective, this story is now truly history. The last Night Witch passed away in 2017. May they, and their story, never be forgotten. (' ')7 Edit: Simple Viking, a couple of things: 1) The Night Witches didn't fly in the victory parade after the war because it would have caused the newer planes to stall, due to the stall speeds of the newer planes being above the maximum airspeed of the PO-2 plane that the Night Witches used. 2) The Commandant went out and looked for the crash sites due to Russian military protocols not awarding servicemembers their service awards and medals if the servicemember being given the award was only MIA (Missing In Action). This was due, in part, to Stalin's distrust of the West, as well as not knowing if the military member in question was actually dead, being KIA (Killed In Action) or had defected or deserted. As a result of this, the Commandant of the 588th went out and found every site and documented it. She not only made this story one of the most provable, but she ensured that every one of her downed pilots and navigators got every award they were due for their military service.

If you want to talk to someone who actually fought with the night witches. My great grandmother used to be one. Absolutely insane woman. Picture Russian Yoda if Yoda decided he wanted to go dark side. She still has her plane, having refused to leave it behind when she moved to Canada. The woman will go on and on and on if you let her (not that I mind as her stories are fascinating. But you can really tell sometimes that's she was from a different era.) and is always happy to talk about her time flying.
The name witch comes from the sound of the airplanes when their engines were cut off. It sounded "Like a witch riding her broom" because you didnt the audio ques you got from other planes.
Fun fact: the planes the all-female regiment were given were so old and so slow, enemy aircraft had difficulty fighting back because their own planes were too fast and they couldn’t get low enough to hit them accurately.
One of these brave women said much later in her life in an interview, something like, 'Sometimes I close my eyes and remember the dark, and I ask myself, "How did you do it?" '
The Polikarpov Po-2 biplane was a simple biplane made of wood and canvas used for training and cropdusting. It was essentially unchanged from its first production in 1928. However it was a very simple, immensely reliable plane making it perfect for untrained pilots to learn on and fly. The 588th Night Bomber Regiment also learned to take advantage of its slowness and incredible maneuverability, turning the engines on and off while making the bomb runs. Its low speed made it almost impossible for modern fighter jets to shoot down (they were just too fast) and anti-aircraft guns to track. The German soldiers thought the planes going by sounded like a witch on her broomstick. One plane, carrying a navigator who mapped out the placement of German troops, would go in and drop flares on the target, then the two others would drop the six bombs they could carry. They had to make multiple trips each night in the approximately 40 planes at their disposal. Each plane carried two women, a pilot and either a navigator or the bombardier. They carried no parachutes as the plane flew so low. Due to its construction the plane was highly flammable. If the plane caught fire, the pilots also burned to death. These remarkable women were brave and resolute, firm in their desire to aid their country. They cropped their hair and were forbidden to act or talk “girlie.” Their commanding officer, Marina Roskova, told them they were soldiers and pilots, no different from their male counterparts. They flew missions from 1942 til the end of the war, losing (I think) 32 members.

I think It was the germans gave them the "night witches" name, due to the fact that appeared at night and sounded like a broom 🤷🏻 And they loved It 😁 Their job wasn't as much attack as not letting the germans sleep so They couldn't be able to fight properly during the day. The use of their poor equipment as an advantage and the use of a psicological wornaout to the enemy was a gold medal deserving strategy

They didn't actually shut their engines off, they reduced power to idle since these planes predated electric starters and were hand start only. Also North Korea used the po-2 in a similar manner against the US during the Korean War. These things had to deal with F-86 Sabres for crying out loud!

(German here) Our history teacher explained us in disturbing details how the Hitler Youth functioned, how they were indoctrinated and in the end, even had Children in the Volksstrum fighting. This made very clear to us, what such indoctrination and propaganda could do that, if we were born in that time, it would have been quiet possible that we would have had been brought up to believe all the nazi propaganda and would have ended up fighting for it. Which is always a good attempt when someone is coming up with a question like "But why did they do it? I would not have done it... i would just have refused!"
^Die Nachthexen, or the Night Witches was a Name bestowed on them by the German soldiers on the Eastern front, because you couldnt see, nor hear them coming. It was as if a witch just targeted your camp out of nowhere. "Das sind die Nachthexen" was almost as feared as: "The Black Death is coming" was in the 1350s
The Germans seem to be really good at badass nicknames for badass units. The Night Witches, the Devil Dogs, and the Hellfighters to name just a couple. Can't wait for Sabaton's next album, the track listing has a song called Hellfighters so that will be cool. For those not in the know the Hellfighters were the U.S. all black regiment formed out of Harlem New York in WW1.
kind of a sad part of that, due to segregation the Harlem Hellfighters couldn't fight in the US expeditionary forces and were actually under the French Army
Since their planes were so small , they could take off and land pretty much anywhere , there are stories of these women being arrested for destroying wooden fences to build take off and landing point

The aircrafts are Po-2, They go barely above 100km/h. Strangely enough, it's the only Biplane with a credited jet kill in the Korean War, A F-94 Starfire, who crashed trying to slow down below it's stall speed. If you still don't think the Po-2 is crap, You said you played War Thunder, The Po-2 used to be in the soviet tech tree but got removed because it did so much worst than all the other starting bombers in the game. It's now a gift aircraft they give out from time to time.

Boys are very visually oriented ("wow, Becky looks nice today" lol) - and while it's "Dorky" - they'll SAY that, but the same kids watch anime ... so, take that as you will. 2) Other Sabaton songs you might react to: "Christmas Truce" - "Defense of Moscow" - and - "Attack of the Dead Men" All are videos - both worth watching and worth reacting to. 3) Please do check out Sabaton History - they take the stories and break them down into videos on UA-cam that fill in a lot more details. 4) I LOVE reaction videos - but here's the why - besides being fun, they show us - despite what our media telling us how different we are and divided - how our similar HUMAN reactions, all around the world, that we share many of the same values. 5) Sabaton exemplifies heroism - NO MATTER WHO it was who was heroic. There are two legends about name origins. Actually i dont know witch one is true may be neither. 1. They used stealthy attack tactic fly only in black nigth, when 3 planes "attackers" climb as hight as possible for that kind of plane and slowly fly there while one of them "bait" starts to attack any target it can recognize. After forst bomb fall bait return home but germans AA starts to try to hit it. And unmask its position with brigth traccers from black land. Then Attackers turn off engines and glide to unmasked targets in absolute silence and in the dark. Then drop the bombs turn engines and fly away. That actually what was showen in movie. But now imagine what see and hear german soldiers? Some shadows fly above them almost absolutely silent with little sound like cloak tremble on the wind. Ablosutely witch on its broom. And then booms ... fire, death, explosions ... 2. Planes were made of wood and easily burn. Sometimes AA were sucsess and then you return to prewouse picture - add to sound of screaming as hell girl who burning alive while her plane falling in flames... i guess that scream was really scarefull and worth name of Nigth Whitches
Since you play WT, let me give you an example that you can understand. The planes they are flying are 1.3. They are flying in 5.3 or better. The enemy planes simply cannot slow down enough to actually target them, but if they do catch them out of place they will get shredded.
You don't need to slow down to pick them off in bnz maneuvers. The main reason why they were so successful is because in the dead of night with no night vision whatsoever engaging enemy planes was close to impossible and flying under those conditions left alone close to the ground was borderline suicidal. Also the fact that they glided to the targets for several kilometers so the Germans had no clue that there were enemies inbound and by the time they attacked it was far too late to start interceptors as they were long gone.

as a german soldier, shooting down a "Nachthexe" instantly gave you a cross of honor. i also want to mention, that "night witches" wasn't their nickname. they got their name from fear of their enemy. which is a decoration few orders can hope for. when did you last hear of a nickname granted by the enemy?
As you may know, very many women fought for Russia as snipers. They often made better snipers than men, since women tend to be more patient and more careful than men. One reason for this surprised me a bit when I read about it: Many many young Russians were allowed and even encouraged to become skilled with rifles. "Rifle sport", the government called it. Really skilled students would receive a "Marksman's medal". That there were millions of trained riflemen and women, with thousands of them skilled at world-class level, allowed Russia, short on skilled instructors as they might have been after the purges, had a huge pool of military age shooters already expert enough as sharpshooters to act as snipers. I do not know how the thousands of expert women, many frothing at the mouth to kill the Germans who were killing their fathers, uncles, brothers, husbands and sweethearts, influenced the leadership into allowing them to act as snipers, but it would make sense to me.
The po-2 is a flying trashcan made from plywood and canvas and was even outdated in ww1 which makes the performance of those women in ww2 even more impressive.
The title of "night witches" was given them by Germans. Ours named them "the night swallows" One sidenote. These women wore no parachutes regardless of strict orders of their commissar. They prefer to take one more bomb aboard instead. And there was another, not so obvious reason. Downed and successfully parachuted behind the enemy lines male-pilot could be captured, beaten, even killed. But the lady-pilot will certainly be raped in most terrifying manner. Thus they preferred to die with their burning crashed planes than to survive and be captured.
Sabaton knows how terrible war is, but they want to immortalize the stories that should be remembered. EDIT: Try not to pause on the solos - it has a tendency to tick fans off a little bit XD or at least back up and let it lead back in when you unpause. Also...while doing Sabaton or Nightwish, be aware that most criticism is not anger, but rather a passionate wish to make sure you get the best experience.
There's a historian who does videos using 'helmets' as an anchor point but he's got a very good video on why "General Winter" (or how Russian invaders 'fail' due to the Russian winters) is mostly a myth. Really it's because Russia has two "mud" seasons where travel on most unimproved roads is almost impossible for a wheeled vehicle. Yes the Germans (and Napoleon to be inclusive) were unprepared for winter but that's because neither planned on being in combat in Russia in the winter. In both cases the Russian traded land for time and the invaders were unable to defeat the Russian military before the next 'mud' season hit, and then winter. The 'truth' is Russia HAS been conquered several times but in most cases it was a divided nation with internal fighting as well as an external enemy so the whole history is really fascinating stuff.
I also heard that it was because (I think unlike most countries) they would make everything unusable. Instead of fighting and being able to conquer cities (and with that resources) they arrived at empty and burned down villages, because the Russians just left their houses and burned and destroyed everything that could've been of use. I think it's called the scorched earth policy? Most definitely wasn't the only reason, but it probably didn't help

You see, I'm Russian and for a long time thought that the name "Night Witches" was made up by soviet guys because of the way this story is told in our schools. They were very proud of the name, we are very proud of the name.
I thought this way even though teachers had always said that the name was made up by german. But I could not find the proofs, and somehow decided that it was a bit of our self-encouragement.
Also. Even if the name had any intention to offend the girls, the name has a bit of fear in it. And this fear gives that feeling to take the name with pride.
(Dogs also can be used as offensive statement, but nobody can say that Hell Dogs didn't carry the name with pride too).

For your students., Sabaton actually got a youtube channel called Sabaton history channel, this was made because the song itself couldnt describe all the details in 1 song, so actually on this channel there is a explanation to the song before it starts, real good if you want the whole story, and some clips more real, also perfect for your students to watch..

My grandmother was in the Women's Air Service Pilots. They flew all the prototypes for the american planes in WW2. There's a funny story of her delivering a new B17 and the base almost accidentally rejecting the delivery because they expected a male pilot.
The aircraft they used were Polikarpov PO-2s (sometimes called U-2). The aircraft pretty much was a trainer/recon/spotter aircraft. To even consider it an attacker would be a massive overstatement of it's abilities, the thing could barely maintain level altitude at full bomb load let alone climb. You mentioned war thunder; It's a hidden event aircraft that needs to be earned during the Halloween events. In meme culture the aircraft is often referred to as the OP-2 as in "overpowered" because it is so bad that one might consider it the greatest and mightiest war machine ever built. Funnily enough this thing actually had a confirmed air to air (in air) jet kill during the Korean war... An American F-80 shooting star attempted to shoot the PO-2 down by tailing it. The difference in stall speeds and low experience of the pilot lead to the F-80 crashing. Not sure if the PO-2 ever scored a hit but considering it had a defensive gun at the back seat is all the reason one needs to be able to assign this kill to the mighty Polikarpov. I pointed out that it was an in air kill because it, also during Korea, disabled/destroyed multiple American jet aircraft in airfield bombing raids. As for shooting one down in a German fighter, I would sum it up as a pain in the arse. Whether it is war thunder sim or IL2 battle of Stalingrad, killing them is a huge nuisance even during the day. If I had been a German pilot, regardless on if I wanted to increase my airkills and the thing was defenseless; If I had stumbled upon one by night, I would probably just ignore it because it's too much effort considering my stall speed was higher than their cruise speed.
I recommend getting it when you've got the chance. Acknowledging and experiencing it's shitness makes you even more speechless every time you think of the night witches.

Edit: Simple Viking, a couple of things:
1) The Night Witches didn't fly in the victory parade after the war because it would have caused the newer planes to stall, due to the stall speeds of the newer planes being above the maximum airspeed of the PO-2 plane that the Night Witches used.
2) The Commandant went out and looked for the crash sites due to Russian military protocols not awarding servicemembers their service awards and medals if the servicemember being given the award was only MIA (Missing In Action). This was due, in part, to Stalin's distrust of the West, as well as not knowing if the military member in question was actually dead, being KIA (Killed In Action) or had defected or deserted. As a result of this, the Commandant of the 588th went out and found every site and documented it. She not only made this story one of the most provable, but she ensured that every one of her downed pilots and navigators got every award they were due for their military service.

If you want to talk to someone who actually fought with the night witches. My great grandmother used to be one. Absolutely insane woman. Picture Russian Yoda if Yoda decided he wanted to go dark side. She still has her plane, having refused to leave it behind when she moved to Canada. The woman will go on and on and on if you let her (not that I mind as her stories are fascinating. But you can really tell sometimes that's she was from a different era.) and is always happy to talk about her time flying.
The name witch comes from the sound of the airplanes when their engines were cut off. It sounded "Like a witch riding her broom" because you didnt the audio ques you got from other planes.
Fun fact: the planes the all-female regiment were given were so old and so slow, enemy aircraft had difficulty fighting back because their own planes were too fast and they couldn’t get low enough to hit them accurately.

The Polikarpov Po-2 biplane was a simple biplane made of wood and canvas used for training and cropdusting. It was essentially unchanged from its first production in 1928. However it was a very simple, immensely reliable plane making it perfect for untrained pilots to learn on and fly. The 588th Night Bomber Regiment also learned to take advantage of its slowness and incredible maneuverability, turning the engines on and off while making the bomb runs. Its low speed made it almost impossible for modern fighter jets to shoot down (they were just too fast) and anti-aircraft guns to track. The German soldiers thought the planes going by sounded like a witch on her broomstick. One plane, carrying a navigator who mapped out the placement of German troops, would go in and drop flares on the target, then the two others would drop the six bombs they could carry. They had to make multiple trips each night in the approximately 40 planes at their disposal. Each plane carried two women, a pilot and either a navigator or the bombardier. They carried no parachutes as the plane flew so low. Due to its construction the plane was highly flammable. If the plane caught fire, the pilots also burned to death. These remarkable women were brave and resolute, firm in their desire to aid their country. They cropped their hair and were forbidden to act or talk “girlie.” Their commanding officer, Marina Roskova, told them they were soldiers and pilots, no different from their male counterparts. They flew missions from 1942 til the end of the war, losing (I think) 32 members.

As a German Soldier that has been deployed to Afghanistan and Mali i can confirm: Soldiers listen to these kind of songs on patrol.
They didn't actually shut their engines off, they reduced power to idle since these planes predated electric starters and were hand start only. Also North Korea used the po-2 in a similar manner against the US during the Korean War. These things had to deal with F-86 Sabres for crying out loud!

(German here) Our history teacher explained us in disturbing details how the Hitler Youth functioned, how they were indoctrinated and in the end, even had Children in the Volksstrum fighting.
This made very clear to us, what such indoctrination and propaganda could do that, if we were born in that time, it would have been quiet possible that we would have had been brought up to believe all the nazi propaganda and would have ended up fighting for it.
Which is always a good attempt when someone is coming up with a question like "But why did they do it? I would not have done it... i would just have refused!"

It was as if a witch just targeted your camp out of nowhere. "Das sind die Nachthexen" was almost as feared as: "The Black Death is coming" was in the 1350s

The Germans seem to be really good at badass nicknames for badass units. The Night Witches, the Devil Dogs, and the Hellfighters to name just a couple. Can't wait for Sabaton's next album, the track listing has a song called Hellfighters so that will be cool. For those not in the know the Hellfighters were the U.S. all black regiment formed out of Harlem New York in WW1.
kind of a sad part of that, due to segregation the Harlem Hellfighters couldn't fight in the US expeditionary forces and were actually under the French Army

Since their planes were so small , they could take off and land pretty much anywhere , there are stories of these women being arrested for destroying wooden fences to build take off and landing point

The aircrafts are Po-2, They go barely above 100km/h. Strangely enough, it's the only Biplane with a credited jet kill in the Korean War, A F-94 Starfire, who crashed trying to slow down below it's stall speed.
If you still don't think the Po-2 is crap, You said you played War Thunder, The Po-2 used to be in the soviet tech tree but got removed because it did so much worst than all the other starting bombers in the game. It's now a gift aircraft they give out from time to time.

So - if I may? A few things:
1) I am a retired military member - and as an NCO (Non-Commissioned Officer - an enlisted leader) I was taught to become a teacher of my Soldiers.
Boys are very visually oriented ("wow, Becky looks nice today" lol) - and while it's "Dorky" - they'll SAY that, but the same kids watch anime ... so, take that as you will.
2) Other Sabaton songs you might react to: "Christmas Truce" - "Defense of Moscow" - and - "Attack of the Dead Men"
All are videos - both worth watching and worth reacting to.
3) Please do check out Sabaton History - they take the stories and break them down into videos on UA-cam that fill in a lot more details.
4) I LOVE reaction videos - but here's the why - besides being fun, they show us - despite what our media telling us how different we are and divided - how our similar HUMAN reactions, all around the world, that we share many of the same values.
5) Sabaton exemplifies heroism - NO MATTER WHO it was who was heroic. That means something - that there were horrible wars, started by those who don't fight in them (nor their families, often) - but how common folk do their level best to do the right thing despite the crushing horror of war (and, yes, I've been to combat - twice).

There are two legends about name origins.
Actually i dont know witch one is true may be neither.
1. They used stealthy attack tactic fly only in black nigth, when 3 planes "attackers" climb as hight as possible for that kind of plane and slowly fly there while one of them "bait" starts to attack any target it can recognize. After forst bomb fall bait return home but germans AA starts to try to hit it. And unmask its position with brigth traccers from black land. Then Attackers turn off engines and glide to unmasked targets in absolute silence and in the dark. Then drop the bombs turn engines and fly away. That actually what was showen in movie. But now imagine what see and hear german soldiers?
Some shadows fly above them almost absolutely silent with little sound like cloak tremble on the wind. Ablosutely witch on its broom. And then booms ... fire, death, explosions ...
2. Planes were made of wood and easily burn. Sometimes AA were sucsess and then you return to prewouse picture - add to sound of screaming as hell girl who burning alive while her plane falling in flames... i guess that scream was really scarefull and worth name of Nigth Whitches

Since you play WT, let me give you an example that you can understand. The planes they are flying are 1.3. They are flying in 5.3 or better. The enemy planes simply cannot slow down enough to actually target them, but if they do catch them out of place they will get shredded.
You don't need to slow down to pick them off in bnz maneuvers. The main reason why they were so successful is because in the dead of night with no night vision whatsoever engaging enemy planes was close to impossible and flying under those conditions left alone close to the ground was borderline suicidal. Also the fact that they glided to the targets for several kilometers so the Germans had no clue that there were enemies inbound and by the time they attacked it was far too late to start interceptors as they were long gone.

It was my best recording ever, it was one of the most amazing things Ive ever seen!
As you may know, very many women fought for Russia as snipers. They often made better snipers than men, since women tend to be more patient and more careful than men. One reason for this surprised me a bit when I read about it: Many many young Russians were allowed and even encouraged to become skilled with rifles. "Rifle sport", the government called it. Really skilled students would receive a "Marksman's medal". That there were millions of trained riflemen and women, with thousands of them skilled at world-class level, allowed Russia, short on skilled instructors as they might have been after the purges, had a huge pool of military age shooters already expert enough as sharpshooters to act as snipers. I do not know how the thousands of expert women, many frothing at the mouth to kill the Germans who were killing their fathers, uncles, brothers, husbands and sweethearts, influenced the leadership into allowing them to act as snipers, but it would make sense to me.
Not gonna lie, Po-2 is one of my favorite planes.

These women wore no parachutes regardless of strict orders of their commissar. They prefer to take one more bomb aboard instead.
And there was another, not so obvious reason. Downed and successfully parachuted behind the enemy lines male-pilot could be captured, beaten, even killed. But the lady-pilot will certainly be raped in most terrifying manner. Thus they preferred to die with their burning crashed planes than to survive and be captured.

Sabaton knows how terrible war is, but they want to immortalize the stories that should be remembered. EDIT: Try not to pause on the solos - it has a tendency to tick fans off a little bit XD or at least back up and let it lead back in when you unpause. Also...while doing Sabaton or Nightwish, be aware that most criticism is not anger, but rather a passionate wish to make sure you get the best experience.

Have you seen the animated Story the Lady of the dark from Sabaton? I am from Germany and i like the Story telling from Sabaton.
There's a historian who does videos using 'helmets' as an anchor point but he's got a very good video on why "General Winter" (or how Russian invaders 'fail' due to the Russian winters) is mostly a myth. Really it's because Russia has two "mud" seasons where travel on most unimproved roads is almost impossible for a wheeled vehicle. Yes the Germans (and Napoleon to be inclusive) were unprepared for winter but that's because neither planned on being in combat in Russia in the winter. In both cases the Russian traded land for time and the invaders were unable to defeat the Russian military before the next 'mud' season hit, and then winter. The 'truth' is Russia HAS been conquered several times but in most cases it was a divided nation with internal fighting as well as an external enemy so the whole history is really fascinating stuff.
I also heard that it was because (I think unlike most countries) they would make everything unusable. Instead of fighting and being able to conquer cities (and with that resources) they arrived at empty and burned down villages, because the Russians just left their houses and burned and destroyed everything that could've been of use. I think it's called the scorched earth policy? Most definitely wasn't the only reason, but it probably didn't help
