The Aeris death was shocking. Back in the day, I played my PS in a military "club" as it was hard to play it on a ship. It was very social place and had a few TV's for us that had our own game systems. FF7 was one game that you would play but were not alone. It would draw a crowd as the people watching you play were fascinated with the story. It was a full house in that TV room when Sephiroth sword went through Aeris. First there was a large, collective gasp of shock. Then, silence. Even people that didn't have much emotion were on the verge of tears. The putting Aeris body in the water, the Life Materia fulling out of her hair and her sinking to the bottom, was so moving. Never did I play a single player game with a large crowd of people watching nor the utter shock and emotion from more than me watching it. It is a moment I will always remember. Oh, and the burning hate for Sephiroth after.

For me back when it came out. I was the home nurse/aid for my ailing grams and mom who had 4th stage cancer. My God. I played it needing a small break and it got both of them. The death of Aeris, I swear my hard Irish/German Grams had tears in her eyes and was mad as S***. The game in a gaming family became to some the best RPG ever. Only game Moms ever played.

I'll echo something game reviewer ProJared once said: 7 is the most important one, 6 is my favorite one, and 9 is the best one. Choosing between those games, and Chrono Trigger and Final Fantasy 10 is like choosing my favorite way to get hammered: no losers there.

It's very telling that when people criticise this game, they only ever say stuff like "It's different to the original" or "The marketing was misleading" instead of anything actually about the game.
The characters were excellently portrayed, both in acting and story (especially compared to the original). The story was drawn out, however is still a first part of a larger whole, and everything they do makes sense and there's nothing illogical. I'm expecting more world building in parts to come, since that's where the game really opened up in the original. Cloud, Tifa and Aerith were all incredibly 2 dimensional in the original, but were given much more life in the remake.
However, some of the side missions weren't great and really ruined the pacing when things should be ramping up. I'm fine with the first 3 groups, however the batch right at the end when time should be of the essence were incredibly misplaced. Also, the multiple parts where you're forced to slow walk or crouch under something was incredibly tedious. But those are the only complaints that come to mind. Everything else seems incredibly superficial.

I do agree with you on most things. The reason they had those annoying crouching moments or having to pass through a tight alley was so that the console could load the new area in. I don't know if they got rid of it in the ps5 version but I don't recall anything annoying like that in the Yuffie DLC.

@@TheAuron32 This is going to be a bit overdone and be a bit off topic, but the game that did backtracking the very best in video game history was Lunar: SSSC PS1
Classic JRPG that was significant because the lines of every single npc in the game seems like it was written by a bunch of jokester comedians trying to outdo each other. It’s absolutely hilarious. AND those lines would change constantly all throughout the game depending on what had happened in the story and who you had with you in your party. Even checking random objects like Luna’s bed would start a huge fight with her if she was in your party, and if she wasn’t, one of your other teammates would call you sketchy or tell you to hold off for now because *she’s watching you.*
Major events transpire and you can head back to every single town or dungeon and the npc and objects would have different, hilarious reactions to what was going on. The NPC would even get into arguments with your teammates or make fun of them leaving them sputtering in rage or rebuttal.
It was an absolute joy to backtrack in that game and I wish more developers would take note of it.

The other is the game's story, whose lack of structure, glacial pacing, repetitive, anime robot dialogue, lack of worldbuilding, bs contrivances etc. I could complain about for days. But the game in a nutshell is essentially 5 hours of story (That's being generous apparently) spread out into a 30 hour game filled with useless filler and fluff. The entirety of a 40 hour on average PS1 story based game doesn't really justify it being spread out into chapters. The fact that this remake on the box isn't being called FF7 Remake Part 1 or Chapter 1 should tell you all you need to know. Even one of my buddies, who is a HUGE fan of the FF franchise didn't know it was being segregated into parts until I gave him that tidbit. Anybody who says the remake being separated like this isn't a blatant move for more profit over the happiness of the consumer is being intellectually dishonest.

You know, the real truth about the original game is, that the first part is fcking magic. Midgar is beautiful, story filled, tragic place with intense plot and so on. You really enjoy going trough it.
...And then, suddenly, you are sent to this open world with absolutely nothing in it, that takes forever to get to anywhere in, with little to no sense of purpose and abstract ethereal "must follow Sephiroth because Reasons" plot. The areas you go to, like Gold Saucer are absolutely tedious, with incredibly bad, mind grinding music that last forever.
Then, at disk 2 or something(at cloud drop and team capture) it gets good again... with actual plot elements in the story.
This was _absolutely_ the right play. Make the best of the first part of the original game.
Then actually flesh out the second part that was such a failure.
Then nail down the last part, the same way you did the first part. (And add reason to play the added content, as, you know, the game gives you 5 days before the comet hits, and then you have a full disk to spend on other stuff... which you can't do, because it breaks immersion. You don't have the time. )

I was initially alright with the remake, but the more divergent it got, the more it made me nostalgic for the old game. Every change they made to the Materia system to make it more compatible to an ARPG was grating and I eventually started to hate the appearance of the wraiths because they felt like the Avatar of the designers telling me I couldn't have what I wanted... with all the subtlety of a big middle finger repeatedly rammed in my face. In the end I don't want FF7-Reimagined, I wanted ff7 with undated graphics. It might not have sold as well, but I don't fucking care. That game was nearly perfect, a graphics update would have made me happy to sink another 100-hours into it. As it is, if I play the subsequent parts, (which I am not really egger to do) it will be the same way I played the first part, on a friends console, without giving square one damn cent of my own money. Physical strength is not what makes these characters strong. Yes Tifa can beat up bad guys but her strength comes from the fact that she endured so much pain and suffering from the hands of Shinra and is still a compassionate person. She is the voice of reason and even cares about the lives of normal people at Shinra. She wants the cycle of suffering and hate to end but not by killing. In contrast to Jessie who has given in to resentment. And Aerith is a powerful mage but what makes her strong is the burden she's carrying. Being the last of her people. Watching her mother die. Knowing things about the future (and probably even seeing her own death). When Barret says he can "hear the planet cry out in pain" imagine how that must be for Aerith because she can ACTUALLY hear that ALL THE TIME.
And still, even with all that, she doesn't give in to despair and does whatever she can. Even if little tasks like bringing flowers to the orphanage appear a bit trivial to her it is not to the other people.
THAT is a characters strength. And in JRPGs you have a lot of that.

My first playthrough I was very hard on the game for the length, linearity, and side quests. But the game made me feel something that I haven't felt in video games for a long time. I care about these characters and what happens to them, the team knocked it outta the park with them, the battle system, the music, the overall more serious tone. I actually cried my first playthrough chapter 14 Tifa scene, haven't done that since Nier Automata. This is one of my favorite games. The same team is behind Rebirth so we are in good hands. @Code Turtle but this particular remake cannot be considered a separate game! If we consider the Remake as a separate game, then too much does not make sense without the context of not only OG FF7, but the entire compilation. For example, the scenes with Zack at the end without context make absolutely no sense. For an uninitiated person, this is simply incomprehensible as scenes with a completely unknown character correlating with what is happening. And given that no explanation is foreseen for several more years, this makes Remake a terrible stand-alone game.

I guess I'm in the selfish and boring minority on this one but I hated the remake. It's very pretty and the combat is nice but they cheapened the story. The original had the characters facing consequences and tragedy and working through that. It was better at communicating the struggle and that gave the story emotional impact. They seem to be avoiding most of the heavier themes in the remake and it just made it feel really shallow to me. When you really like an old movie with a good story it feels a bit insulting when someone does a remake that changes the major plot points. Was it broken? Did it need to be fixed? Who complains about lack of suspense in a remake? Suspense wasn't the purpose, getting a updated version of something you loved was the main expectation. I feel baited and robbed since the odds of getting a remake that actually respects the really good original story will not be happening in my lifetime because this fluff took the spot. Perhaps it's just me, but I was/am disappointed over FFVII Remake. Given the time it took to get this game out of the gate, I was really just hoping in replaying the entirety of original story(maybe some extra bits here and there to give more depth to characters and fix some old translation issues) with modern graphics and technology. I wasn't expecting this weird meta-alternate universe timeline shenanigan's stuff, and I can understand the point behind "been there, done that" with retelling the story note-from-note, but there's been MANY games that have had remakes/remasters that don't touch the story any. The reason being, the story in itself is what made that game so memorable, iconic, and a classic; to say the least.
Good examples of this would be the Crash and Spyro trilogy remakes, and I'd dare say the Xenoblade Chronicles Definitive Edition(which I consider a remake, being that it was remade from the ground up, using the XC2 engine, I believe). I don't see it being a bad thing to have a classic game like this, being brought back to life with a modern take of it's world and environments; I absolutely love the way Midgar looks, and seeing iconic spots now even more epic because of the jump of technology. I was hoping for the same thing when going out into the world of Gaia, and REALLY was looking forward to seeing how Gold Saucer would be.
I don't believe anyone asked for, or even wanted a alternate telling of the story, and yes, it does give us more of cryptic, mysterious, ominous feeling of what's going to happen next; but is it really worth it? I mean, how long are we going to have to wait for Part 2, and then Part 3; just for this story to finally be over with? A story that could've been possibly finished in one whole game? It just makes me feel like SE is being greedy, and wants to milk the FFVII title even more, like they've been doing over the years; maybe that's just me though.
Also, yes, the padding in this game is atrocious. It's just there to bloat the time spent playing, making the game longer than it really needs to be.

    • @vincentgraymore
      @vincentgraymore 2 роки тому +2

A part that many forgets is that this "excitement for the unknown" is a window in time that will pass. When part 2 is released there won't be this mystery anymore, even if SE leave on another mystery box for another installment. The argument from the producer Kitase to change Sephiroths involvement was based on that everyone knows who he is and that it would not be as exciting to have him as he originally was (especially for Midgar I suppose). If we go by the same argument for the whole remake, then the remake will eat its own tail with just part 2 as the unknown journey will be a very bad and strange transition scene when playing each installment back to back that carries an obvious statement to new players (as they haven't experienced the journey in any way) and for anyone with knowledge it would be at best a member berry but for new people just a sad remnant of an opened mystery box they missed out on.
Then we also have co-director Toriyama, most likely the real culprit behind the meta narrative of freedom for the developers, as he has said that he did not want to be restricted by the OG (but have it in mind...) but have the same kind of development process as they did for the OG, which for a remake, loosely or strict, should be impossible.
Many fans have flipped their script after playing the remake, as they believe and often genuinely feel that this was better than getting a traditional remake. This is the power of subversion, and for some reason many thought it genius to get a sequel and burn the old game's story and pour salt on the ashes. There were people that wanted this new kind of thing and people that think that meta messages of this kind is the best. They might not have been the majority before remake was released though. There are also many people that wanted Zack and Aerith to survive in any kind of additional media, especially in Japan, but I do wonder if they think it will be worth it when they do die anyway. Then you also have shippers, that want any justification for their ship and also "waifu/husbandos" culture that keep characters alive because of popularity. How it turns out is not yet known, but it will be, and then what? Have this halfbaked sequel taking the place in the hearts of many because of audiovisual fidelity over the OG, which needed more than a face lift and more than what Ever Crisis will provide.

My issue was that they called it "remake" while it wasnt really a proper remake like Demon's Souls. It basically a brand new game that follows similar plot points.
I like it now! But in my head i call it FF7: RETAKE

    • @6Kubik
      @6Kubik 3 роки тому +2

Its actually ff7-2 because the original game happened and remake is another timeline. So it is a second game and sephiroth traveled back in time. This is why it is called remake... Remake the timelime.

Great review. Personally loved it (I mostly have nostalgia for Midgar since I never completed the original game until it came to Switch), and the soundtrack is exceptional. Hard mode definitely makes you focus more on staggering enemies and tactics although some bosses are pretty damn punishing. The PS5 upgrade was a great excuse to replay it. Wish you could skip the big hands and other slower sections on repeat playthroughs though!

Earlier this year I decided to jump into final fantasy with almost no knowledge of the series. I started with seven and almost instantly was hooked the music the atmosphere the general characters and plot are also unique but at the same time feel grounded. when I finally beat the game It was unlike any other game I had played I wasn’t wanting more asking for a next part I felt satisfied.

This is a low iq take. The reason why lion king remake is bad is not because it followed the original storyline. It is because the realistic visuals cannot convey anything, the characters cannot emote, it looks like an uncanny valley nature documentary, whereas the animated style lends itself well to perfectly conveying human like expressions and emotions.
Betraying our expectations of what the remake was going to be and changing the story into some kind of meta alternative timeline sequal has not won over any new fans but just only succeeded in cheesing off a huge number of fans of the original.

So glad Drinker covered this. I agree with most of his review. As a big FF fan, I’m satisfied with this game (thus far). FF7 is probably my favorite game of all time, and they did it justice without pandering to a demographic - thanks Japan. It captures the spirit of the original game, while opening up doors for the future. The characters are great, the voice acting is spot on, the materia system still works decades later, and the added rpg elements (leveling up your weapons, switching characters on the fly, etc.) is killer. If I have one problem with the game - which may end up not being one when we finish the remake - it’s the plot ghosts. On one hand, I like the meta nature of it. It’s almost like the whispers are us purists - the majority of FF7 fans - who wanted the game to be a 1:1, desperately trying to keep the game on track. By the end of the game, determinism is lifted from the equation, and the characters literally have free will to do what they want. Will Aerith still die? Will Cloud search his psyche and come to grips with who he really is? We truly don’t know, and I think that could be fun to watch play out. What I and many others don’t want is a timeline where past Cloud meets future Cloud, and they do battle with 69 Sephiroths. We don’t need FF7 to become Marvel. Keep it simple. For that reason, the game is a 9/10 (solid A) for me. Could be a perfect 10/10 if they nail the landing.
Also: Red XIII is a good boy
    Thanks Drinker!

I'm kinda surprised you liked this as much as you did. There's a lot of quality to the game for sure, but I think the direction it takes towards the end is poorly conceived, and massively damages the story.
It's bad enough advertising what people want, a REMAKE, and then delivering what is effectively a reboot/stealth sequel instead. But most of the new additions to the narrative and world are really bad. The whispers and time-travel mechanics are not only a complete retcon of the original game's lore, but don't even remain consistent with their rules. The whispers are apparently capable of showing up anywhere time to try and keep things the same as the OG, but then they just don't half the time for no reason. Sephiroth is effectively a totally different character, acting more like AC Sephiroth (who couldn't even be alive if that's the case). Plus the time travel mechanics are completely nebulous, as though they're a cheap way of trying to justify different timelines in the story where that's never been a thing.
On top of that, the whole message of "defying fate" and is kinda in direct opposition to the original game, where so much of the message was about acceptance of death, inevitability, and things you can't change. That we're all one small piece of a greater circle of life. It feels more like a mashup of Kingdom Hearts and Final Fantasy 13 (probably because it was written by the same people).
I'm glad the game gets a lot of the recognition it deserves, but it's annoying that it seems to be getting a pass on some of its bad writing. It's giving me a lot of Force Awakens flashbacks, "Well, it MIGHT turn out to be good by the end, so let's wait and see the whole thing first."

Honestly, I felt lied to with this game's story. The game is beautiful, the voice acting is amazing, and the gameplay is perfect! BUT it's not a "Remake", it's a "Retelling". It was amazing up to the whispers and Sephiroth basically saying "Yeah, I've seen this all before". The only reason I may pick this up again is because it introduced Wiess and Nero. Dirge of Cerberus was the first FFVII game I played, and I loved it! So seeing that they are bringing them back has me interested. I just hope the changes aren't so severe for the rest of the story.

Hard disagree. As someone that is a JRPG freak that played the original to death as a child, the remake is a bombastic, over-priced hollow experience that I am actually blown away that you believe it holds true to the spirit of the original.
Next they'll remake the first ten minutes of The Godfather II as a two-hour movie and people will be praising it rather than seeing it as a cynical cash-grab, attempting to squeeze every single bit of nostalgia value out of a property.

You know, the first part of ff7, midgar, was really well made. Enjoyable, plot heavy, world building, original. The second part was an ABSOLUTE bore, with incredibly bad pacing, incredibly bad plot (ethereal Sephiroth hunt for reasons you dont even know, gold saucer...) The third part is again great. (after cloud falls).
The fact they decided to make it 3 parts gives you hope that the could actually afford to make the second part playable. It also focused into making better the best part of the game. (although there are flaws.)
