    The performances of Kubrick's actors is unparalleled. It's realism, surrealism, and theatre combined.
    Jack Nicholson put it best, "He's looking for the picture within the picture."

      I think we all get that feeling from this film and The Shining because of the tension and the atmosphere. Just the idea of a protagonist being influenced by malevolent forces.

    Flawless acting by Tom and both women in this scene. There's just the right amount of polite charm and even a little fear coming from Bill. And the women are both incredibly alluring and predatory, and presented in a very natural way. Kudos to Kubrick for directing this scene.

    Watch for the doubling in the film: "where exactly are we going, exactly?" There are many places in the film where characters say something twice or a character repeats what another character states. Also, when Dr. Bill reads the newspaper article of the death of Amanda Curren in the cafe, there are three sentences (or phrases) that are mistakenly repeated in the text.

      What does "where the rainbow ends" mean please

    • @ScoiataeI
      @ScoiataeI 4 роки тому +125

      @@newbeginning3568 Well there's a lot of theories. If you notice, there's a large quantity of rainbow coloured lights in almost every scene of this movie. Let's call these places "the rainbow". Now, the only scenes without these decorations are Zeigler's bathroom, where the prostitute overdoses, and the masked ball itself. If you think about it, where the rainbow ends could refer to the places in society that aren't meant for uninitiated people like Bill. Where the rainbow ends refers to the forbidden places, the places only the higher echelons of society has access. He gets his first glimpse of this when he saved Mandy from the overdose in the bathroom.
      So where the rainbow ends could refer to the point in which our illusions of ethical and moral life end, and where the grim reality of life begins. In other words, the real happenings that go on "under the rainbow". This notion is also mirrored when we see the costume store is called rainbow, and the store below is called "under the rainbow" which is where we see the trafficking of a young girl.
      A note to add, rainbows are symbolic of happiness, but I feel that they are used here to denote a delusional reality, or an illusion of happiness. We know that society is not "all rainbows and sunshine" but in this case, the elite wear their masks both figuratively and literally in order to showcase themselves in a certain way. That's why Cruise turns off the Christmas tree lights towards the end of the film, his illusion has been shattered and he has been awakened to the true nature of the elite underbelly that he happily rubbed shoulders with before.
      Sorry for rambling, I just love this movie!

    • @deckofcards87
      @deckofcards87 4 роки тому +11

      @@ScoiataeI It's also interesting that the costume store where Bill buys the mask is called "Rainbow Fashions." If we accept that Dr. Bill's odyssey is partly in his head - the new york streets, the character, and the orgy at the mansion all seem mildly surreal - a dreamscape; then the symbolism of the rainbow and the name itself showing up have a Fraudian connotation. It seems to do with with Bill's subconscious. You mentioned the rainbow may symbolize danger...There you go; it also symbolizes Bill's temptations..."Where the rainbow ends" it's all very metaphorical, like in a dream. It leads to danger, physically, mentally and to the end of his marriage. If anything, it's an effective stylistic tool to keep the plot in a riddle. It's based on an Arthur Schnitzler novel. Schnitzler was a great admirer of Freud and I guess they stuck close to the source material.

    • @ScoiataeI
      @ScoiataeI 4 роки тому +16

      @@deckofcards87 Very good points. The dreamy feeling of the entire movie does serve to confirm that the journey Bill undertakes is a very psychological one. The whole Wizard of Oz rainbow connotations is interesting as well, as it is connected with MK Ultra and mind control. If you notice as well there's subtle signs such as the lens flare whenever Bill is experiencing sexual tension of any kind. It occurs when he's with Domino, and it's always situated below the waist! When he gets called "Fag" by the frat boys it happens again. I think the tension there wasn't necessarily sexual but by insulting him, he was emasculated and his sexuality was attacked. I don't think the lens flare was unintentional, knowing Kubrick. What do you think?

    The costume store is called Rainbow, where does this store "leads bill to"? To the depraved masked elite party. When the girls are saying "where the rainbow ends" they're refering to the masked party, it may be an indication that said girls or others members of the initial normal party where also part of the masked party.

    I think this suggests that Somerton were grooming Bill to join them, they keep getting invited to parties that they don't know anyone at, which coincidentally leads to Bill meeting what is theorized as the red-cloaked man, where he is asked if he can keep a secret, the rainbow shop owner is potentially an agent for that child that's probably not even her father, and used the incident to then gauge Bill's response to child prostitution, it's also obvious to the two individuals in the balcony at Somerton that they knew he didn't belong because he came in late, but despite this, no one else looked at him strangely as if they were expecting him. Then they pull the staged scare and when Bill showed interest the following day they offered him to trade in his daughter for connections and power.

    i believe that 'where the rainbow ends' refers to falling for temptation and thus sexual intercourse. the film itself seems to be about temptation and rainbows are colourful and enticing, as is the prospect of infidelity with beautiful affluent women. this film was adapted from the novel 'dream story' and i think that the temptations throughout this film are merely dr. bill's misinterpretation of events which are fuelled by his subconscious sexual desires to cheat on his wife, making the events of, and leading up to, 'the party' nothing more than a dream-state. the anger he feels towards his wife when she tells him her fantasies is down to the fact that he refuses to accept his own, which leads him to where the rainbow ends. which we find out ends in a fruitless venture and a man left grovelling in tears at the guilt of his own thoughts.

    Those two woman (particularly the one named, Nuala Windsor who is one Tom Cruise's right arm) are flirting harder than I've ever seen any woman flirt in real life! Especially when Ms. Windsor spells her name out for him, which takes place just before this clip. This scene took me a bit out of the film as in my opinion, the two ladies here are absolutely KNAWING on the scenery here! And the British one's flirtatious look at exactly 0:04 ? They're a bit over-the-top with their flirtation but I suppose their performances are EXACTLY what Mr. Kubrick was looking for.

    EWS remains "controversial" and that is great. Controversial because Kubrick died before he could tinker with the final cut; controversial because it's supposed to be X but is actually Y, etc. I loved this film when it was first released, but the proof of the pudding was repeated viewings, which more than 20 years on I am always up for (no male puns intended).

    It's a shame Tom Cruise's character Bill didn't get off with the two very attractive models in the opening scene from this clip ! He probably felt like kicking the messenger in the b*lls for cramping his style !
    On a more serious note - the film examines themes of fidelity, trust, jealousy and sexual desire within a marriage - and the likely fallout from such if these are in any way compromised. I remember reading a revue of this film at the time - and it suggested that it gave a good insight into Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman's marriage - and why possibly they eventually divorced.
