This is just speculation on my part but it seems the "magic Lantern" name stuck even after the marvel was commonplace. I collect glas slides from the 1920s-30s and they are primarily educational and for presentations, not to entertain audiences. So the "magic" moniker persists even though the process was eventually commonplace.

shame they made it electric. removes all the magic.
Getting a gas connection for the original lime light is a bit hard to find now…
