    George Frideric Handel's 'Zadok the Priest' from his Coronation Anthem HWV258, performed by the Academy of Ancient Music and Choir of the AAM, conducted by Music Director Richard Egarr and recorded live at Symphony Hall, Birmingham.
    Composed for the coronation of King George II on 11 October 1727, Handel's 𝘡𝘢𝘥𝘰𝘬 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘗𝘳𝘪𝘦𝘴𝘵 (HWV 258) stands alongside 'The King Shall Rejoice', 'My Heart is Inditing' and 'Let Thy Hand Be Strengthened' as one of the composer's Coronation Anthems. One of Handel's best-known works, 𝘡𝘢𝘥𝘰𝘬 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘗𝘳𝘪𝘦𝘴𝘵 has been performed prior to the anointing of the sovereign at the coronation of every British monarch since its composition and is universally recognised as a staple of British patriotic music. The words have been used, in some form, in every English or British coronation for more than 1,000 years.
    Fun fact: English composer Tony Britten rearranged 'Zadok the Priest' in 1992 as the basis for the UEFA Champions League Anthem, now enshrined as one of the best-known sports songs in the world!

    How I pine for the days again when we can sit together in the hundreds and sometimes in the thousands in great musical halls and hear this kind of music! Note that the intro was played pp throughout, as Handel originally marked it - so many conductors nowadays crescendo all the way through. Effective in its own way I suppose, but it doesn't half lessen the impact of the choral entry. I like it this way.

    • @Chris-hf2sl

    The choir's opening is extremely good. Baroque pitch (A=415 Hz) helps a lot with more chest voice resonance. Despite it just being a half-tone lower.
    20 singers is now even seen as a 'large choir' among a lot of Ancient Music specialists.

    I really wish that our Orchestra and Choir at my High School could play this on Period Instruments, but we have modern instruments though, and not really enough instruments to make this type of orchestra.

    • @Organintetnational
      @Organintetnational 4 роки тому

      More than instruments it requires good singers and otherwise a piano or digital organ and even a guitar is sufficient as accompaniment.

      Learn to play a period instrument on your own.There are places all over Britain that carry them. Then, go to a good music school and when you are graduated, audition for a period orchestra. They are everywhere now.

    You might wonder (as I did) why they sing God Save the King when we have a Queen at present. However, when Handel composed this anthem in 1727, George II was King of England. Since this is the Academy of Ancient Music, devoted to period authenticity, it is only correct to sing God Save the King.

    • @anghinetti
      @anghinetti 6 років тому

      Eileen Pollock: George II was never King of England. The last King of England was William III, from 1689 until 1702.

      @anghinetti is correct.
      George ll was king of the UNITED KINGDOM although uninformed English people equate England with the UK.
